MEMORIAL TO ARCHBISHOP
Organ Concert May 1
Dr. Marilyn Mason,
American’s foremost woman
organist, will give a memorial
concert honoring the late
Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan at
the Cathedral of Christ the King,
Wednesday, May 1 at 8 p.m. The
concert is open to the public.
Dr. Mason, who studied in
Canada, Mexico and Europe,
holds a master’s degree from the
University of Michigan. She and
her husband, Dr. Richard K.
Brown, are members of the
Michigan faculty.
Dr. Mason, chairman of the
department of organ at the
University, recently returned
from her sixth European tour.
She was the first woman to give
an organ recital in Westminster
Abbey, where she has appeared
three times.
In addition to her teaching
and concert tours, Dr. Mason is
noted for her research. She has
adapted previously unknown:
compositions by Berlioz arid
recorded the Satie Mass for the
Poor.
Receives Honor
Eileen Bennis, North Fulton
high school junior, is one of 400
Georgia students selected to
attend the Governor’s Honors
Program at Wesleyan College,
Macon, this summer.
Miss Bennis will major in
Spanish during the eight-week
program. She is a member of
Christ the King School of
Religion and the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Bennis, 3627

Series On U.S. Church
To Begin On TV May 5
NEW YORK (RNS) - “The Changing Church,” a six-part
series covering significant events in the Roman Catholic
Church in the United States over the last 10 years, will be
telecast on the NBC-TV network beginning May 5.
Produced by the National Council of Catholic Men in
association with the Public Affairs Department of the National
Broadcasting Company, the series will include three film
reports and three videotaped studio shows of “conversations”
among leading Catholic spokesmen in America discussing the
issues raised in the films.
James O’Gara, editor of Commonweal, has written the
three half-hour films made by the NBC Religious Programs
unit in representative U.S. cities: Cincinnati, Pittsburgh,
Atlanta, and Oklahoma City. Film of the closing session of the
Second Vatican Council in 1965 and the Third World Congress
of the Lay Apostolate last October will also be used.
The first of the films, “At the Grassroots,” will examine
changes in the Church at the parish level. Part II, “Serving
Secular City,” will discuss interracial justice, civil rights,
anti-poverty programs, and inter-denominational projects to.
serve all people. The final film, “The American Experience,”
will consider the “shape” of the changes in the Church in
terms of its effect on the religious orders.
The three film programs will be seen May 5, 12, and 19.
The discussion programs will be shown May 26, June 2 and 9.
