CONVERSIONS DECREASE
Nearly 48 Million Catholics In U.S.
NEW YORK (NC) - Catholics
in the SO United States, including
families of defense forces at
home and abroad, and of
diplomatic and other services
abroad, now number 47,468,333,
according to the 1968 Official
Catholic Directory issued here by
P. J. Kenedy & Sons.
The new total represents’ an
increase over last year of
603,423, and a 10-year increase
of 11,444,356 or 31.7 per cent
ovef^the 36,023,977 in 1958.
Converts during 1967 numbered
110,717, a year’s decrease of
6,761 and the lowest annual
number of converts since 1953.
There are now 29 archdioceses

Catholic population of
20,398,545, and 125 dioceses
recording a Catholic population
of 27,069,788. The latter figure
includes the 2,000,000 Catholics
reported by the Military
Ordinariate.
The 29 archdioceses reported a
growth of 246,136 and the 125
dioceses 357,287. The seven
archdioceses with Catholic
populations in excess of one
million are Chicago, 2,342,000;
Boston, 1,871,408; New York,
1,870,000; Los Angeles,
1,662,242; .Newark, 1,637,634;
Detroit, 1,548,594; and
Philadelphia, 1,353,024.
Brooklyn continues as the largest
diocese, with a Catholic
population of 1,551,264 and
others with more than 500,000
are: Buffalo, 937,567; Pittsburgh,
926,879; Rockville Centre, N.Y.,
878,010; Cleveland, 868,871;
Trenton, 655,016; and
Providence, 577,460.
Statistical information is
available for the first time on the
newly established California
dioceses of Fresno and Monterey.
Both were established Dec. 13,
1967, when the diocese of
Monterey-Fresno was split.
Five dioceses reported no
change in Catholic populations
and 34 reflected decreases.
Advances were reported by 115
Sees. The largest increases have
been noted in Newark, 33,237;
Melkite-rite diocese (West
Newton, Mass.), 32,000; Boston,
27,918; Rockville Centre,
27,889; Hartford, 27,556;
Youngstown, 26,216. Nine
additional Sees recorded increases
of more than 15,000.
The directory lists 267
members of the hierarchy-an
increase of one -six cardinals, 26
archbishops, and 235 bishops.
The first issue of a Catholic
Directory for the United States
was published in 1817.
Subsequent editions have,
reflected the steady growth of
the Church. Yearly changes and
additions now average more than
200,000 to record the correct
status of the Churcflf.
A decrease of 89 in the number
of the clergy, brings the total of
ordained priests to
59,803-including 37,453, or 582
more, diocesan clergy and 22,350
religious community priests, a
decrease of 671. Two cardinals,
two archbishops, seven bishops,
one abbot and 943 priests are
listed in the Necrology. Professed
Religious personnel include
12,261 Brothers, a decrease of
278, and 176,341 Sisters,
representing a decrease of 330.
The directory reports 17,500
parishes with resident pastors-a
year’s increase of 125-and 564
parishes without resident clergy,
a record total of 18,064 Catholic
parishes in the 50 states. Also
listed are 4,346 missions, 1,404
stations and 12,694 chapels, a
decrease of 155 places where
Mass is celebrated regularly.
A total of 13,898 separate
educational institutions are
recorded—250 fewer than
reported in 1967. Included are
124 diocesan seminaries, 437
religious community seminaries,
or novitiates and scholasticates,
305 colleges and universities,
1,407 diocesan and parish high
school, 868 private high schools,
10,375 parish elementary
schools, and 382 private
elementary schools. There are, in
addition, 103 protective
institutions, with 8,110 youths in
attendance.
