Bishops Asked
To Uphold
Orthodoxy
CHICAGO (NC) - The
National Federation of Laymen,
Inc., an organization of
conservative Catholics, has asked
the bishops of the United States
to combat the “increase in the
publication and toleration” of
“questionable” religious texts.
Through letters sent to all
bishops, the group asked that the
matter be discussed at the
meeting in St. Eouis (April 23 to
25) of the National Conference
of Catholic Bishops.
The bishops, the letter said,
should “take steps to restore
orthodox religious texts in
Catholic educational systeins by:
“Disclaiming texts that
advance a ‘new theology’ of the
Mass as a ‘meal’ disclaiming any
that ignore, or reject-subtly or
not—original sin; disclaiming

parish center. Atlanta priests and
priests from neighboring dioceses
met in Atlanta to discuss the
national organization’s proposed
constitution.
In addition to discussing the
constitution, priests also studied
material on social action,
communications, personnel, role
of the priest and priests’ councils
and the laity.
The role of the priest outline
includes such topics as the
freedom of priests to develop,
new forms of ministry,
continuing education. Some of
the questions posed include:

experience of the priests of your
diocese? How do you think
authority should undertake
leadership in necessary
experiments and innovations? To
