Baptist Convention
Marked By Oppenness
AN American Jesuit, as
spokesman for the Secretariat for
Christian Unity, has hailed the
Vatican-Catholic-Protestant Bible
translations. Father Walter M.
Abbott, S.J., said the agreed
guidelines open the ’way for
fruitful inter-confessional
collaboration in getting the
Scriptures to the people. Father
Abbott noted that a “few” Bible
societies had objected to the joint
project. President of the United
Bible Societies is the Anglican
Archbishop of York. (RNS Photo).
Lack Of Aid
Will Bring
Revolution
LONDON (NC) — Unless more
aid is given to relieve poverty in
the developing nations, there will
be a world revolution, John
Cardinal Heenan of Westminster
said here.
Speaking to participants in the
triennial conference of the
International Council of
Voluntary Agencies (June 3),
Cardinal Heenan said;
“You cannot have so many
millions of people living in misery
while so many other people are
living in near-luxury, without an
explosion. It is not so much a
question of us living next door to
each other. We are living in one
house-it is one world in that
sense.”
(Editor’s Note: Father Frank
Ruff, a Glenmary priest who
serves in North Georgia, attended
the Southern Baptist Convention
at Houston. Following is a second
report on his impressions of the
convention.)
One impressive feature of the
recent Southern Baptist
Convention in Houston, Tex.,
was its openness.
The press was not only
received as a welcome guest, but,
more importantly, was given free
access to all the information it
wanted. As a guest, the press felt
that the Baptists were proud to
have them around. A great part
of this impression was created by-
the genuine warmth and
helpfulness of W. C. Fields and
his staff from the Baptist Press.
The warm reception could
have been interpreted as just
good public relations if the
attitude of openness had not also
been prevalent.
For example, when a group of
Baptist students questioned the
commitment of the Southern
Baptist Convention on national
social issues, a confrontation
-between the students and Baptist
leaders was immediately arranged
and announced to the press and
the public. The students spoke,
pastors and church executives
responded, and the press
questioned both publicly.
The executive committee
debated and amended a strong
and controversial statement on
race prepared and signed by 71
agency heads and editors of state
Baptist papers. Was this a closed
meeting? Was the press excluded?
On the contrary, I had a specific
invitation to attend and a press
luncheon was delayed until the
final vote was taken.
Again, immediately after the
election of the new president of
the SBC, Dr. W. A. Criswell, an
outspoken conservative, the press
office announced an hour-long
press conference. Dr. Criswell
subjected himself to pointed,
detailed, and extemporaneous
questions. There was no hiding
from the issues. Dr. Criswell was
sweating before the hour was
finished, but when it was, the
press and the world knew where
he stood.
I naturally reflected on the
Vatican Council, the Bishops’
Synod meeting in Rome, and
especially on our bishops’
semi-annual meeting. Why are
these meetings so closed? It is
certainly easier to deliberate in
the • peace of privacy. But is it
necessarily better? Would it not
be good for the Church to know
how individual bishops stand on
controversial matters? I saw
strength in the Baptist openness.
