Atlanta To Have
6 Passion Play 9
A passion play under
ecumenical auspices, with
probably a Negro playing the role
of Christ, has been scheduled for
an outdoor performance here in
September.
The City of Atlanta, the
Atlanta Chamber of Commerce,
and Economic Opportunity
Atlanta (EOA) will cooperate in
the dramatic presentation which
is a part of EOA’s Summer arts
program. It will be sponsored by
the Christian Council of
Metropolitan Atlanta.
According to the Rev. William
Holmes Borders, pastor of the
Wheat Street Baptist Church, the
presentation “will cut across
racial, denominational, caste and
class lines."
In indicating that a Negro will
probably play the role of Christ
in the drama, he said this would
be a worldwide precedent for
such a bi-racial production.
In answer to a question on
how he thinks the white
community would react to a
Negro in the role, Borders said it
might “first reject, then warm up
and finally say ‘hallelujah’ at the
end. ’
