Aurelio Escarre, O.S.B., 60,
former abbot of the famed
Montserrat Abbey and an
outspoken opponent of the
Franco government, died here of
liver and kidney ailments.
During his rule of the
Catalonian abbey, from 1946 to
1965, Dom Escarre became a
symbol of opposition to the
Falangist government and a
Catalan separatist aspirations.
Although he denied being a
part of the separatist movement,
he was himself a Catalan and
expressed sympathy with many
Catalan aspirations, including the
right to use their own language.
His monastery published the only
Ca talan-language magazine
authorized in Spain.
His criticism of the Franco
government were frequent and
unsparing. On one occasion, he
reportedly said that the Franco
regime was un-Christian because
it had made no effort at
reconciliation between the victors
and the vanquished after the
Spanish Civil War.
In reply to a government slogan
acclaiming “25 years of peace” in
Spain, he described the period as
“twenty-five years of bondage.”
He also said that there was “no
authentic liberty and no justice”
in Spain and liked to quote the
statement from Pope John’s
encyclical, Mater et Magistra, that
“nations should be able to change
their government when they
wish.” Remarks of this sort
received international attention
in 1963 when he was interviewed
by the Paris daily newspaper, Le
Monde.
Friends and honored guests
were then introduced to. the
crowd: From the Atlanta Braves,
Lynda Cochran, Eddie’s
secretary, Pat Jarvis, Clete Boyer,
