University
Sit-In
Fizzles Out
PITTSBURGH (NC) - A sit-in by
a group of about 30 Dusquesne
University students fizzled here
after the group decided to obey a
Common Pleas Court injunction
requiring them to leave the
Student Union Building.
The group, mostly members of
Students for a Democratic
Society (SDS), were protesting
the fact that campus policemen
carry mace, a chemical used to
disable hostile persons. The SDS
members rejected a suggestion by
Harry L. McCloskey, dean of
students, that the mace issue be
taken up for discussion by the
Student Congress and university
officials. They demanded that the
officials pledge to abide by the
outcome of an immediate
referendum of the question
among students and faculty.
A spokesman for Duquesne
said campus police carry mace
because of the university
officials. They demanded that the
officials pledge to abide by the
outcome of an immediate
referendum of the question
among students and faculty.
A spokesman for Duquesne
said campus police’ carry mace
because of the university’s
proximity to the county jail. The
mace has never been used. Three
escapees from the jail were
captured on the campus last
summer.
