DOWNTOWN
Shrine Makes Plans
For 100th Anniversary
By DAMON J. SWANN "
It has been announced by
Father Arthur D. Murray,
O.F.M., pastor of the Shrine of
the Immaculate Conception that
the parish will have a Fall Festival
on November 22 and 23.
The annual event is to benefit
the 100th Anniversary
Renovation Fund. In the Fall of
1969 the present church building
will be 100 years old. The
renovation planned is to match
the dire need of extensive repairs
to actually keep this historical
landmark standing. The beautiful
towers long a part of Atlanta’s
skyline are in a state of decay.
The roof of Atlanta’s Mother
Church, as well as the walls and
floors, needs attention. The
sanctuary’s renovation is also part
of the program to preserve the
oldest Catholic Church in North
Georgia.
Conception Church was built in
1848. The construction of the
present church building was
started in 1869. As the Shrine to
Our Lady enters its 100th year,
the Franciscan Fathers and the
16S families extend a cordial
invitation to friends and former
parishioners to attend the Fall
Festival on November 22 and 23.
Be sure to meet your friends at
the Shrine on these dates.

Atlanta’s Sacred Heart Church,

Requium Mass for the late
Colonel Daniel J. Mannen, Vice
Commander of the 1st Special
Operations Wing who died

The finance committee for the
renovation program consists of
Mr. and Mrs. John Camarata, Mrs.
Flora Graham,- and Messrs.
George Aseff, William Leide and
Edward Gasperini. Heading the
festival committee are Mrs. Flora

One of the obvious problems
that the Shrine, of the
Immaculate Conception has faced
during the past three or four
decades is the dwindling number
of parishioners, as downtown
Atlanta has changed and people
moved to the suburbs. On the
other hand and while the parish
has but 165 families now,
parishioners, former parishioners
and friends, through their love of
Our Lady’s Shrine, join with their
hearts, minds and hands to make
every project and goal a success.

Express Gratitude Over
Vietnam Bombing Halt
WASHINGTON (NC)
Prominent Roman Catholic
leaders have expressed gratitude
and hope for peace in the wake
of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s
announcement of a bombing halt
in North Vietnam, effective Nov.
1.
Bishop Joseph L. Bemardin,
general secretary of the National
Conference of Catholic Bishops,
said:
“I was gratified to learn that a
complete bombing halt has been
TAC in England, last winter.
Colonel Mannen is survived by
his mother, Mrs. Helen R.
Mannen of Atlanta, and his wife,
Juliet and six children, Julianne,
Daniel Jr., Mary, William, Helen
and Michael. A brother, W.
Benjamin and a sister, Susan
Martha also live in Atlanta along

Following Mass at the Base
Chapel, Colonel Mannen was

called in Vietnam. This is surely
an important milestone in the
history of this tragic war. I am
confident that our leaders will
continue to do everything
possible to ensure that the
bombing halt does indeed
become an irreversible step
toward a just peace. Our prayers
are with them.”
Auxiliary Bishop John J.
Dougherty of Newark, president
of Seton Hall University and
chairman of the Bishops’
Sub-Committee on World Justice
and Peace, said:
“Hope for peace was given new
life by the President’s
announcement of the cessation of
the bombing of North Vietnam.
Those who spoke out for this
pblicy over the past months may
feel their voices have contributed
in some measure to this decision.
This decision does not mean
that peace is just around the
comer. It does mean that our
government has had the moral
courage and the stature to take a
risk for peace that may bring it
closer.
