Oldest Bishop Is Dead

Bishop Mateo Mugica
Urrestarazu, the world’s oldest
Roman Catholic bishop, died
here at the age of 98 years and
one month. Earlier this year, he
had celebrated the 50th
anniversary of his episcopal
consecration.
The bishop has lived here in
retirement since 1948. Before
then, he had been in exile in Italy
since October, 1936, because of
disagreements with the
nationalist forces which
controlled his region of Spain at 1
the. outbreak of the Spanish civil
war.
He was appointed bishop of his
native diocese of Vitoria in 1928.
Earlier, he had served as Bishop
of Osma from 1918 to 1923 and
of Pamlona and Tudela from
1923 to 1928.
With Bishop Mugica’s death,
the oldest Catholic bishop is now
97-year-old Bishop John B.
MacGinley, born Aug. 19, 1871,
who was Bishop of
Monterey-Fresno, California,
from 1924 until his retirement in
1932. Bishop MacGinley, a native
of Ireland, now living there in
retirement, is also the bishop
with the most seniority, 58 years;
He was consecrated on May 10,
1910.

Antwerp, Sept. 22, 1875; Bishop
Jean Marie Jan, born in
Clegueree, France, Nov. 2, 1875;
Archbishop Jan Pieter Huibers,
born in Amsterdam, Nov. 15,
1875 and Bishop John Ross, S.J.,
bom in Aachen, Dec. 26, 1875.

Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls in
the 5 th and 6th grades will be
held at Monastery of the Holy
Ghost, Conyers, on Saturday
Nov. 23. Bus transportation will
be provided. Pick-ups will be
made at St. Jude’s, 8:00 a.m.;
Christ and King, 8:00 am;
Immaculate Heart of Mary, 8:30;
K-Mart at Gresham Rd and 1-20,
8:45. Buses will return to K-Mart
Gresham and 1-20, 5:40;
Immaculate Heart of Mary, 6:00
pm; Christ the King, 6:30; and
St. Jude’s, 6:30 pm.
Each girl should wear her
uniform and bring sit-upon,
raingear, and nose-bag lunch
(drinks will be provided). An
adult should accompany each
group. Fee for the day $1.25
should accompany each
completed registration form.
Deadline for registration is Nov.
16th.
NEW YORK - Archbishop Terence J. Cooke recently blessed 14,000
rosaries donated by the New York State Knights of Columbus for
distribution by the Archishop when he continues the tradition of his
predecessor as Military Vicar, Francis Cardinal Spellman, of visiting
the men and women of the Arme Forces overseas at Christmas time.
