Priest Declines
Appointment
As New Bishop
INDIANAPOLIS (NC) - A
priest of the Indianapolis
archdiocese was granted
permission to decline
appointment as auxiliary bishop
of the Fort Wayne-South Bend
diocese.
Father John Elford, 46,
administrator of St. Patrick’s
parish in Terre Haute, Ind.,
summed up his action in a brief
statement issued here.
He said Pope Paul VI had
granted a petition which he made
to “dispense me from accepting
the office of bishop to which he
had so graciously appointed me.”
Letter To The Editor
To the Editor:
While we in, the inner-city are
happy about the response of the
parishes of V the Archdiocese to
the request for funds of the
particular " council of the St.
Vincent de Paul Society, 1 feel
that it i?i necessary to bring to the
attention of the people of the
Archdiocese the tremendous
work being done by the
inner-city parishes is
unbelievable. Although Sacred
Heart contributed only $520.00
to the particular council, in the
same month our parishioners
contributed $1,135.00 to our
parish St. Vincent de Paul
Society. Last year over
$15,500.00 was distributed to
the poor through our parish
alone, an amount which is almost
equal to the entire
Archdiocesan-wide collection.
Only when we include the
outstanding work of the parish
conferences at Immaculate
Conception, St. Anthony’s and
Our Lady of Lourdes do we get
the full picture of what the
Church is doing in the inner-city.
We have reached a new level of
Christian maturity when those in
the suburbs can look at the inner
city and say: We are involved. I
write only to bring to your
attention that we, in the
inner-city welcotne the concern
of all the Catholics of the city
and in turn we pledge to continue
our own work with the poor, the
homeless and hungry within the
confines of our parishes, grateful
in the knowledge that we are no
longer alone.
Father John J. Mulroy
Pastor of Sacred Heart
The appointment was
announced July 24 in Washington
by Archbishop Luigi Raimondi,
Apostolic Delegate in the United
States.
No reason was cited by Father
Elford for his action. He asked in
his statement prepared as a
mimeographed letter addressed to
“Dear Friends” that his decision
be accepted “without question.”
The text of his statement
follows:
“Dear Friends:
“I want you to know that I
have asked our Holy Father, Pope
Paul VI, to dispense me from
accepting the office of bishop to
which he had so graciously
appointed me. I now have
received word that our Holy
Father has granted me that
dispensation. I hope you will
realize that my decision was
reached only after much prayer,
thought and counsel. Now with
the granting of my petition to the
Holy Father, I am at peace. I am
confident that you, my friends,
will accept my decision without
question.
“I sincerely regret the
disappointment this may be to
some. I thank you for all your
congratulations and good wishes.
I thank you most of all for your
prayers. Please do continue to
remember me.
“I also regret that I shall not
have the opportunity of working
with Bishop (Leo A’) Pursley and
the priests and people of the Fort
Wayne-South Bend diocese.
“So now I remain by the grace
of God and kindness of our
archbishop what I was before, the
administrator of St. Patrick’s
parish and your grateful friend.”
Father Elford was ordained to
the priesthood in 1947.
There was no comment from
the Indianapolis chancery office
on Father Elford’s action.

On Cushing’s
Retirement
VATICAN CITY (NC) - A
Vatican spokesman has said that
Pope Paul VI has not said
anything regarding the intention
of Richard Cardinal -Cushing of
Boston to resign and that the
Pope is not planning to say
anything.
(Meanwhile, in Boston, at a
mission departure ceremony for
priest volunteers of the Society
of St. James, which he founded,
Cardinal Cushing said: “I’ll be
down to see you in Peru in
January, and as soon as I can
retire, I’ll be down there to live.”
(Earlier, Cardinal Cushing said
that, because of the mail he had
received on his remarks
concerning the marriage of
Jacqueline Kennedy to Aristotle
Onassis, he proposed to offer his
resignation to the Pope at the end
of this year.

THOUGHT
We shudder when we see them on TV, the
families in India who have never lived indoors.
They live in the streets, painfully, sleep huddled
together on matting on the sidewalks. The pen
nies they earn buy scraps of food and rags....
In Calcutta alone they number 100,000. They
are not drunkards or tramps, these families.
All they need is a chance. . . . "For only $200
(for materials), we can give a family a home,”
writes Archbishop Joseph Parecattil from Erna-
kulam. "We’ll provide the supervision, our men
will do the work free-of-charge, and the family
will own it outright once they prove they can
take care of it themselves. We'll start the work
immediately. Can you imagine the happiness a
‘home of their own’ will bring?”... Here's your
chance to thank God for your family, your home,
your warm bed. Archbishop Parecattil will write
you personally to say thanks.
