Nixon Pledg es Work
To Unify The Country
NEW YORK (RNS) - The objective of his administration, from the
outset, will be the unification of the nation, Richard M. Nixon said
here when unofficial tabulation showed that he was President-elect'
after one of the closest Presidential election in history.
Mr. Nixon, 55, held a press
conference after receiving a wire
from Vice President Hubert
Humphrey offering
congratulations.
Mr. Humphrey also stressed the
importance of national unity and
told Mr. Nixon that his intention
was to go on with “building of
the better America we all seek in
peace and harmony.”
Mr. Nixon said his goal as
President wojild be to carry out a
request he aw on a sign held up
by a teenager at an Ohio rally:
“Bring Us Together.”

declared his administration would
be an “open” one, “open to new
ideas, open to men and women of
both parties . . . open to critics.”
He said he aimed at bridging
the gap between the races arid the
generations. And he appealed to
youthful supporters of Vice
President Humphrey not to give
up participation in politics.
Since there was no traditional
religious issues at stake in the
campaign, little initial attention
was given to vote analysis along
lines of religious affiliation.
Voting patterns did bear out
the often-made observations that
the nation stands divided. The
close race showed polarization in
terms of geography and interests.
For the most part, Mr.
Humphrey received the support
of Negro citizens,
Mixican-Americans and the poor
of industrial centers although his
appeal was not limited to voters
in those groups. He ran strongest
in the East.
Mr. Nixon’s major strength was
in suburbs, small towns and rural
areas. While he had been
expected to receive more than
the necessary 270 votes in the
