Advisory Council
Selects Members
WASHING TON—Regional
meetings are being held
throughout the United States
during November to nominate 50
priests and 200 laymen and lay
women for positions on the first
U.S. Catholic Conference
Advisory Council. The process
f or the meetings had been
outlined by Archbishop John F.
Dearden of Detroit, president of
USCC, in a letter in October to
all Ordinaries.
The schedule of meetings and
the region involved are as
follows:
Nov. 18, Boston, region 1; 19,
New York, (2); 20, Philadelphia
(3), and Omaha (7); 21, Denver
(10); 22, San Francisco (9); 25,
Chicago (6) and Atlanta (4).
26. Detroit (5). and Dallas (8).
The USCC will be represented
at the meetings by either Msgr.
'FranCuf T. Hurley, associate
general secretary, or Father
Edwin—B. Neill, assistant general
secretary.
Three delegates from each
diocese have been invited to the
regional meetings, a priest, a
layman and a • lay woman,
selected in a manner designated
by each Ordinary. The delegates
at each regional meeting will
make nominations for the
U.S.C.C. Advisory Council.
Ten bishops are to be selected
to the advisory committee. Five
Religious men and five Religious
women will be selected in a way
to be arranged by the
Conferences of Major Superiors
of Men and Women. The regional
meetings will be concerned with
nominations of 50 priests and
200 laymen and laywomen, from
whom 10 diocesan priests and 20
lay persons will be chosen to
complete the membership of the
U.S.C.C. Advisory Council. This
selection will be made by the ad
hoc committee set up earlier.
Archbishop Dearden in his
letter to the Ordinaries said that
while the procedure outlined
“poses certain difficulties,” it will
ensure that the membership of
the council is “as representative
as possible.”
It is noted that membership on
the Advisory Council “is a unique
opportunity for assisting the
bishops in carrying out the work
of the Church in the modern
world.” Criteria for selecting
members, it is stated, should
include:
-A sense of the needs of the
Church and an understanding of
the meaning of renewal.
-A familiarity, commensurate
with one’s age and experience,
with the major social and
religious issues of the day.
