Allentown
Diocese Finds High School
Cost Is $225 Per Student
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (NC)-Msgr.
Charles T. Moss, financial
secretary of the Allentown
diocese, releaded a detailed report
on diocesan high schools to the
Council of Priests during their
quarterly meeting (Dec. 10).
The report states that the
average cost-per-student in the
nine diocesan high schools for the
1967-68 school year was
$225.31. “This cost,” Msgr. Moss
noted, “is comparatively low
when compared to the
cost-per-student in the local
public schools-in fact, depending
on the particular school district,
it is 58 to 70% less than public
high school cost-per-student.”
Msgr. Moss said cost-per-student
was determined according to the
recommendations of the U.S.
Department of Health, Education
and Welfare.

students to teacher, Msgr. Moss
told the Council of Priests that
the ratio has been reduced from
30 to 1 (during the 1961-62
school year) to 20.9 to 1 (during
the 1967-68 school year. The
diocesan financial secretary also
noted that this ratio compares
very favorably with the
student-teacher ratio in the
public high schools.
“From September, 1960, to
September, 1968, the number of
lay teachers of the faculties of
our high schools has almost
doubled,” Msgr. Moss said.
“Moreover,” he continued, “from
September, 1960 to September,
1968, the salary of the individual
teacher has increased by 53%
and, if the diocese follows the
recommendations of the Special
Synodal Commission on Catholic
Schools, this increase will
continue at the same rapid
pace-perhaps even faster.”
