Heart Church as Father Simon Slattery celebrates Mass in Spanish and Mr. Maximo Clavijo acts as
Lector.
Every Sunday At 7:30 P.M.
Mass For Spanish Speaking
People Held At Sacred Heart
Mass is celebrated in Spanish at
7:30 p.m. each Sunday for the
250 Spanish speaking parishoners
at Sacred Heart. They are natives
of 14 different countries. The
music program was begun under
the direction of Sister Imelda, a
student at Spellman College from
Bogata, Columbia. This Sunday
the congregational singing will be
lead by Los Duques, one of the
most famous mariachi groups in
Mexico. They are in Atlanta
performing at “Su Casa”
Restaurant at the White House
Motor Inn just a few blocks from
Sacred Heart.
Father Slattery has been
celebrating the Spanish Mass for
the last four months. Father
David Patterson, the other
assistant pasastor of the Parish, is
now completing a refresher
course in Spanish at the Berlitz
school, and will begin alternating
with Father Slattery at the end of
February.
Classes in English are
conducted for the parishoners on
Monday evenings from 7:30 to
9:00 p.m. in the basement
meeting room of the Religious
Education building on Ivy Street.
When asked why there is a
weekly Mass in Spanish, Father
Mulroy, the pastor of Sacred
Heart replied: “Because everyone
should feel at home in his
parish Church. The Church is not
just the house of God, it is also
the house of the people of God.
The Spanish Mass, the folk Mass
at midnight and the majesty of
the High Mass at 10:00 a.m.
reflect that we are Catholic not
just in our belief but also in our
liturgy.”
