Mrs. King Has Audience With Pope Paul
During Overseas Trip To Accept Awards
ROME, ITALY-Mrs. Martin
Luther King Jr. was scheduled to
have a private audience with Pope
Paul VI at the Vatican here. It
was her first meeting with a
Pontiff of the Roman Catholic
Church.
The widow of the slain civil
rights leader is on an 11-day trip
to accept two international
awards in Italy and India.
On Saturday, January 18, the
city of Verona, Italy, presented
its 10th annual San Valentino
Award to Mrs. King as a person
“typifying universal love and
understanding.” She was the first
non-Italian to receive the award.
Verona is the home city of
Romeo and Juliet and San
Valentino, or St. Valentine, was a
4th-Century Christian martyr
who came to symbolize love.
After meeting with Pope Paul
today, Mrs. King flies to New
Delhi, India, where she will
accept Thursday on behalf of her
husband the Jawaharhl Nehru
Award for International
Understanding. This award, to be
presented by Indian President
Zakir Husain, is being made
posthumously to Dr. King. It
carries a cash prize' of about
$13,000. The Nehru Award is
named for the late Indian leader
who was, like Dr. King, a disciple
of the nonviolent leader
Mohandas Gandhi. United
Nations Secretary-General U
Thant received the first annual
Nehru award last year.
Mrs. King is a member of the
Board of Directors of the
Southern Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC), which her
husband served as a founder and
President until his assassination
last April 4. She is accompanied
on the present trip by her special
assistant, Mrs. Fred C. Bennette,
Jr., and Rev. Andrew J. Young,
Executive Vice President of
SCLC.
In addition to receiving the
awards and visiting the Pope, Mrs.
King has also visited the city of
Milan, Italy, famous for its art
treasures.

‘We’re All In War’
Says Peace Preacher
LONDON-Everyone who pays taxes directely or indirectly is
“deeply and personally involved in the war business,” the
congregation in Westminster cathedral here was told in a Peace
Sunday sermon.
y
“Have you got a pair of Bren guns or a box of grenades in your
back room?” asked Msgr. Bruce Kent, chaplain to London University.
“No reason why you shouldn’t have, since every man, woman and
child in this country spent about 35 pounds ($84) each on
armaments last year.
“And apart from expenditure
on our own arms we also belong
to an exporting economy. Not
only cars, radios and sewing
machines-but also rockets, tanks
and bombers....
“Peace is a sleepy sort of word
and anyway fighting and war are
a long way from here-Nigeria,
Vietnam, the Middle East or even
Londonderry. War hasn’t much
to do with us-or so we are
inclined to think. Nonsense, of
course...It is no good getting
sleepy. We are all involved in the
war machine up to our necks....
“Our Lord told us to turn the
other cheek and Peter to put
away his sword. He also told us
to feed the hungry.
“Today our country spends
two billion pounds ($4.8 billion)
each year on the swords of the
20th century; 900 million pounds
($2,160 million) on beer and
only 150 million pounds ($360

million) is lent or given to the
poor countries of the world, our
brothers in Christ....
“Peace is so much more than
the condemnation of certain
modes of behavior. It is not the
silent tension of the arms race. It
is not the cowing of small nations
into silence . with Economic
pressure. It is not the passivity of
us in the West who enjoy the
good life and are happy with
things as they are. Christian peace
starts with love for the whole
community.”
Special prayers for the world’s
oppressed, hungry, homeless and
illiterate are being said in the
Catholic churches here
throughout January and at other
times during this coming year.
The Catholic Council for
International Relations, which
does most of the publicity and
propaganda for this cause, is
working in close cooperation
with other national humanitarian
groups and making the need
better known and understood in
schools, universities, clubs and
social groups.
Every single person in this
country on average spends about
$128 a year on cigarettes and
alcohol alone. The average person
in India has less than that, $72 a
year, to spend on all his needs.
Some 500 million people in the
world are at present either dying
of hunger or suffering from a
serious shortage of food.
The C.C.I.R. will this year
sponsor a record 100 overseas
volunteers to work professionally
in underdeveloped countries.
