She Feels Editor
Is Self-Righteous
Editor:
It seems too bad that you
felt compelled to foul up
what might have been a good
column last week (Oct. 30) by
unnecessary and uncharitable
attacks on others such as
your reference to the men of
the Holy Name Society.
These groups are usually
small and are perhaps unable
to embark upon projects
calling for thousands of
dollars and worthy of
capturing public attention
and great headlines, but is
that sufficient reason for a
self righteous critic to pass
upon them? What Jesus might
just be inclined to call rash
judgment.
No specific group is
named, so I refer, as an
example, to the Holy Name
men of Sts. Peter and Paul
Parish and their goals. In
what way is it self-serving to
promote reverence for the
name of Jesus and His
presence in the Eucharist? In
what way is it self-serving to
buy a piece or two of much
needed equipment for the
, parish school? Where is the
self service in providing

athletic equipment and sports

youngsters, or a bit of decent
recreation, and fellowship for
the adults of the parish
occasionally?
Maybe these men are not
in a position to go out and
personally feed the hungry,
cure the sick or
comfort prostitutes, as Christ
did, but who are you to
declare them to be
unconcerned and uncaring for
the physical and spiritual
needs of the poor? Isn’t it
just possible that these men,
inspired by reverence for the
name of Jesus and the needs
of the Church, might even be
giving a part of their income,
acquired with some very
personal sweat,to such good
causes, though they aren’t -
going about publicly
proclaiming their charity?
It might be well to
remember, at times, that
there is also room in the
Church for the average man
who, by the grace of God and
much effort, has managed to
achieve a reasonable standard
of living. He need not
apologize
Our Lord Himself tells us
that man does not live by
bread alone. He also told us
that we must love our
neighbor as ourselves. He
didn’t say that in order to
love your neighbor, you have
to hate yourself.

The CCD Potpourri
Continues Merrily
Editor:
I’ve just finished reading
an article in the Oct. 23
Georgia Bulletin, entitled,
“Board Sets CCD Policy.” It
closes by saying that “the
people” should let the parish
board members know how
they feel about the
catechetical fee. I’ll be happy
too. I’m opposed to any
charge for CCD students
other than a book charge,
which usually is not more
than two dollars a book.
If the Church’s primary
responsibility isn’t to TEACH
religion, what is? Do
expensive church interiors
and large bank accounts take
priority? At St. Thomas More
Church, the CCD charge is
$16. for two children. If a
family can’t afford to pay
this amount, must they then
BEG that their children be
allowed to go free, or would
their sense of pride force
them to keep the children at
home?
Where does the money,
other than the two dollar
book charge, go? Not to pay
the teachers. They donate
their time out of Christian
duty. The cost of gas and
electricity for an hour a week
is very small. The class room
is already there.
My husband was one of
two lay people chosen to be a
member of the Archdiocesan
Board of Education. This
Board recently passed a
policy suggesting that a
minimum of $12 a student be
charged for catechetical
instruction. But, he could
never attend any of the
meetings because he has to
work for a living and the
meetings were always held at
mid morning or on a
weekday. Therefore, one of
.the two voices for the laity
was not heard because the
meetings were held at times
convenient only to the clergy.
We had to remove our two
children from Catholic
School because we couldn’t
afford the cost of a Catholic
education. We CAN afford
the $16 for the school of
religion but, out of principle,
will not send them. Instead,
we hold regular classes each
Wednesday evening and teach
them ourselves. Incidently,
my husband continues to
teach a catechetical class.
The article stated that a
fee makes parents more aware
of the cost of religious
education and, therefore pay
! more attention to it. I believe
most parents already care.
But those parents who truly
don’t care, will probably not
bother to send their child at
all. And here is the child, not
only with“not-caring”
parents, but with a
“not-caring” Church as well.

Editor:
By way of this leter we
wish to express thanks,
appreciation, congratulations

of last Sunday, November 9,

which too many of us have

war in Viet Nam. Not to
think about an issue such as
the war in Viet Nam - not to
look at it as Christian people
- is at best amoral. To
hesitate to form a judgment
about a Viet Nam and to wait
overly long to act upon that

Seminarians Wrong,
Athens Reader Says
Editor: I have sent the
following letter in answer to one
which appeared in last week’s
Bulletin (Oct. 30):
Dear 175:
Pity the poor
congregations if the stodgy
letter about war is an
example of the type of
thought and delivery which
will go into our future
sermons. Perhaps the
seminary does not teach
writing; most certainly it
should teach thinking.
The first paragraph could
well have been lifted out of a
radio Moscow propaganda
broadcast. Only twisted
thinking could call the
billions of dollars which have
gone forth from this country
in foreign aid “exploitation.”
The United States is the
leader of the free world.
Rather than dominate such as
USSR-Czechoslovakia,
US SR-Hungary, we have
supported the U.N. We have
gone to Paris. We have been
willing to sit at round, square,
or oblong tables. How could
we address our own domestic
problems after having
abandoned other people
whom we promised to help
with their problems? You,
175, signed your letter
“Brothers...” Are South
Vietnamese not Christ’s
brothers, even if not yours?
Probably none of you, 175,
is old enough to remember,
and obviously you have not
studied your history or you
would know, the Church
identified atheistic
Communism as the retd
problem for the human race,
back when it was unpopular
to do so. You may ignore
Communism but remember it
has promised to bury you. It
has committed atrocities and
murder-by whom and against
whom? Christ brought the
Gospel of the brotherhood of
man. This did not prevent
him from throwing the
money changers out of the
temple.
The early Church did not
back away from strife. If it
had, there would now be no
need for 175. Why are you
bitter and disillusioned?
Christ lived in times which
were infinitely more trying
than yours. Never was he
bitter and disillusioned. Your
calling should be to uplift
man, not to tire him with
poor syntax. Send your letter
to Hanoi, Peking and
Moscow. Don't bug us while
we are doing our best to free
the world from oppression
and war.
Since we may have the
misfortune of getting some of
you in the parish, or for the
sake of whatever parish you
wind up in-please, work on
your rhetoric. Please, try not
to think beyond your level of
incompetence.

The bishops also heard
talks by Andrew Gallegos,
co-chairman of the Catholic
Bishops’ Task Force on
Urban Problems and Father
Geno Baroni, of Washington,,
Task Force co-chairman.
G a 11 e g o*s , field
representative of President
Nixon’s Council on Youth
Opportunity, charged that
Spanish-speaking Catholics
live “in the shadows” of
American Catholicism.
‘‘We have been
discriminated (against) by our
fellow Catholics,” Gallegos
said, “we have been excluded,
clergy and laity alike, from
positions of influence and
leadership . . . from the
episcopate, from the
chanceries, and from national
regional offices.”
Ninety per cent of almost
12 million Spanish-speaking
persons in the U.S. are
Catholics, he said. But “there
is not one single indigenous
Hispanic person” among the
bishops who head dioceses
and “Hispancis are almost
totally unrepresented in
official national and djocesan
appointments.”
One step toward attaining
a greater voice in national
Church structures, he
suggested at a press
conference, would be to
double the budget—of
$100,000 last year-of the
Division for Spanish-speaking
of the U.S. Catholic
Conference. Another step he
said, would be for the bishops
to issue a statement
supporting and endorsing
Cesar Chavez and the farm
workers.
Father Baroni, who is
executive cjjrector of the
Office of Urban Affairs of the
Washington archdiocese, said
the need for developing an
urban mission policy must
have a “moral response” from
Catholics.
Specifically, he suggested
that the NCCB establish an
annual collection for human
development as a “concrete
initiative in leading the
nation... to develop new
priorities and new efforts in
meeting human needs in our
society.”
