Discusses
Abortion
Editor:
ABORTION! Let’s legalize
it WITHOUT restrictions! But
let us also remove all
penalties on murder (after all,
the murdered often has the
chance of self defense);
manslaughter (voluntary and
involuntary); dangerous
driving, as well as any laws to
protect life. At the same time
the stigma on suicide must be
removed.
Or, perhaps, these means
of taking life are different
from refusing the right to live
to an unborn, therefore
defenseless child?????
There are many reasons
given for the right of a
woman to decide whether or
not to have an abortion.
Many sound very distressing,
and undoubtedly are to the
individual. Perhaps our
society can help those who
find it necessary to interrupt
a pregnancy for economic
reasons.
I propose thought on a
society for children whose
parents cannot properly take
care of them - we support a
humane society for animals!
On the millions of dollars
paid to wealthy land owners
for simply not growing food!
The billions of dollars spent
on defense - defense of
human life whicn is not even
threatened in proportion to
funds spent.
Adoption procedures
which make it often so
difficult for couples to take
as their own a child needing a
home. Certainly, our country
can come to just solutions in
this very serious issue.
1 find it very distressing
that our highest federal
government officials couple
pollution and its solution
with birth control. It has
been said that NOTHING
CAN BE DONE TO
ELIMINATE THE
DANGERS OF POLLUTION
BEFORE THE BIRTH RATE
OF HUMAN BEINGS IS
C]QRTAILED AND that
MEANS OF CONTRACEP
TION (including the Pill)
ALONE ARE NOT
ENOUGH.
Incidentally, industry is
the major pollutant. It is
good that we are made aware
of an ever increasing world
population and its problems.
However the means implied
in the above statement are
unacceptable^
We cannot ignore the fact
that God is Creator of all
things. We are challenged to
WORK WITH HIM in
preserving the earth and the
life HE CREATED , we can
trust that the will provide for
creation. Our coins say: “In
God we trust”. Do we?

100 Vow
Renewals
WASHINGTON
(NC)--More than 100
clergymen joined Cardinal
Patrick O’Boyle in
Washington in renewing
priestly promises of celibacy
and obedience during the
Holy Thursday Mass of the
Chrism at St. Matthew’s
Cathedral here.
The vow renewal was a
suggestion made when the
Vatican released a new
prereface for the Mass during
which a bishop blesses
sacramental oils to be used
during the year. A
controversy arose when the
suggestion was interpreted by
some as an order from the
Vatican which priests were
obligated to follow.
Some U.S. bishops chose
to leave the renewal
ceremony out of Holy
Thursday liturgy until
uniform text is released from
the Vatican. Others were
using sample form supplied
by the Vatican in February.
Some modified the text to
meet their own needs.
Renewal ceremonies were
scheduled in the archdiocese
of Baltimore, St. Louis,
Dubuque and Los Angeles
among others, some prelates
inviting all diocesan priests to
attend. Others invited a
representative sample of
priests.
In the ceremony, the
priests renewed “in the
presence of the Holy people
of God” the promises made
on the occasion of ordination
to the subdiaconate and again
on the day of ordination to
the priesthood.

Jesuits Seek Split
MADIRD (NC)-The
efforts of a small group of
conservative Spanish Jesuits
to establish “a true Society of
Jesus” apart from the parent
body have been rejected by
the top superiors of the
order. But news reports
indiccate they have received
some consideration by the
Spanish bishops and the Holy
See:
The group, estimated to
consist of from 20 to 100
priests of the 3,500 Spanish
Jesuits, said the aim of its
movement is “to preserve the
true spirit of St. Ignatius (the
founder of the Society of
Jesus) and guarantee” the
society’s survival by setting
up its own houses and
scholasticates and being
subject only to the superior
general of the Society of
Jesus in Rome.
However, both Father
Pedro Arrupe, S.J., the
Spanish-born superior
general, and Father Urbano
Valero, S.J., the Spanish
Jesuit provincial, have
disapproved of the
conservative priests’
proposals.
Father Valero’s office here
KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(NC)--A request that
consideration be given to
establishing an office for
ecumenism in the U.S.
Catholic Conference was one
of two resolutions resulting
from a meeting of the
Catholic section of the
National Workshop for
Christian Unity here (March
15-18)
In another resolution,
ecumenists asked the Bishops’
committee on Ecumenism
and Interreligious Affairs
(BCEIA) to study the fact of
incidence of intercomm
union, to get a better idea of
its scope and its significance
The Bishops’ committee,
which met separately on the
occasion of the workshop,
gave some consideration to
these resolutions, but has not -
yet developed a definite
response to them, according
to Father John J. Hotchkm,
associate director of the
committee.
issued a statement
acknowledging the attempts
to start “an experiment in
community and apostolic
living within a line for the
most part conservative.” But
the statement added that
“the Society of Jesus has
found the proposal untimely
in its present form.”
Father Valero dismissed
press reports that the society
is divided “between reformers
and conservatives.”
“It is true,” he said, “that
some Jesuits who generally
uphold the renewal of the
society, disagree with the
practical ways of achieving it
and if they have asked for a
special arrangement.. .they
do not pretend to bring about
a juridical division of the
society.”
(In Rome a high Jesuit
official at the society’s
headquarters said Father
Arrupe’s answer to the
proposals of the dissident
group of Spanish priests was a
definite “No,” because the
superior general contended
that they are divisive in
nature.
(The official said that
Father Arrupe is due to make
Record attendance at this
year’s seventh annual
workshop totaled more than
500 ecumenists, including
Catholics, Episcopalians,
Methodists, Lutherans and
others. The majority of those
were not Catholics, a first for
the Catholic-sponsored event,
Father Hotchkin noted.
Among speakers at the
Unity Workshop was the host
Bishop Charles Helmsing of
Kansas City-St. Joseph, as
well as Msgr. Bernard Law,
director of the Bishops’
committee, who discussed
preliminary results of a
survey conducted by the
Center for Applied Research
in the Apostolate (CARA)
and the BCEIA. Purpose of
the survey sent to all dioceses
is to determine to what
extent they are active in
ecumenical affairs, what
positive results they’ve
received and what obstacles
they were running into.
a visit to Spain in April but
that the visit had been
scheduled for some time and
is not a reaction to the
conserative movement.
(The official cited a report
in the Spanish newspaper,
Vanguardia, late in February
that the Spanish bishops had
discussed the proposal of the
group of Spanish Jesuits to
form “a true Society of
Jesus” in Spain and that the
bishops had referred the
matter to the Vatican.
(The offical said that the
present problem began more
than a year ago with “a
relatively small group’ of
Spanish Jesuits who proposed
that they be allowed to
operate houses of the Jesuits
in Spain solely under the
jurisdiction of the Jesuit
superior general in Rome and
bypassing all lcoal provincials
and superiors. The housing
the official said, would be run
according to the “old
traditional” basis of the
society which the priests
maintain has been set aside
by the recent renewal of the
society. It was also stated
that the group additionally
proposed that it be allowed
to recruit novices and
’supervise their training
according to the the “genuine
Jesuit spirit.”)
Father Valero confirmed
that Father Arrupe will pay
his first visit to the Spanish
province of the society since
his election in 1965.
Father Arrupe visited
several Jesuit institutions in
the world following his
accession and began a renewal
program along the lines of the
Second Vatican Council’s
decrees on The Church and
the Modem World.
Early in March, the
headquarters of the Spanish
Bishops’ Conference here
confirmed that the Holy See
had consulted with it
concerning the proposal to
establish the “conservative”
branch of the Jesuits. Other
sources said the bishops dealt
with the matter at their
November, 1969 meeting but
abstained from comment.
Later Archbishop Casimiro
Morcillo of Madrid, president
of the bishops conference,
sent a circular letter to all the
bishops requesting a vote on
the proposal of the group of
Jesuit priests. The results of
the vote have not been
disclosed.
