Pipe Organs Best,
Music Chief Says
Enjoys Bulletin But...
Editor:
During the past year,
controversy has arisen and
been expressed in this
newspaper regarding the
allocation of parish funds to
replace pipe organs with new
pipe instruments as opposed
to electronic instruments. In
this connection, I think it is
meaningful to quote from a
booklet prepared by the
Diocese of Albany, New York
entitled, PROCEDURES
AND GUIDELINES FOR
RENOVATION AND
BUILDING OF CHURCHES
AND CHAPELS. The quote is
as follows:
“Communities ought to make
every effort to afford a true pipe
organ. In many cases a pipe organ
is no more expensive than an
electronic instrument. Even the
best electronic . instrument is
inferior to a real pipe instrument.
The organ design should be
functional in that the pipe work
exposed to view rather than
covered by materials, facilitates
freer tonal speech and makes for
greater aesthetic integrity. This is
also less expensive. ”
The foregoing statement
should be universally applied
to all of our churches.
Electronic organs are at best
poor substitutes, and if ever
music should receive top
priority in parish budgets, it
is now during the time of
liturgical renewal where
music no longer is a
secondary “icing on the
cake”, but an essential and
integral part of the new
liturgy.
In conclusion, may I
comment that small well built
pipe organs can be purchased
for small churches and
chapels at prices equal to or
LESS than many of the
inferior electronic
instruments being purchased
under the illusion that these
are the most economical and
proper solutions to the
problem of liturgical music.

“WHERE’S MOTHER?”
“Three tots at home alone
no food, skimpy, worn
clothes - waiting for their first
grade sister to come home
from school and hoping she’ll
bring a roll or two, leftover
from her lunch so they’ll have
something to eat.
“Where’s the mother? Out
working, not wanting to leave
her babies but feeling its
better to do that than to be
on the welfare rolls.
Fiction designed to tug at
somebody’s heart? Far from
it. As a group of Smyrans
have discovered, this story is
fact and there are many more
similar to it.
“In answer to this, a truly
ecumenical movement has
begun. A group of Smyrna
pastors - Catholics,
Presbyterians, Methodists,
Lutherans and Episcopalians,
headed by Rev. Rolland T.
Miesel of Our Savior
Lutheran Church - has been
conducting meetings about
establishing a day care center
where children can be left
while mothers work.
“The group began
incorporating under the
name, ‘Cobb County
Community Services, Inc.’
They have learned that the
federal government will fund
75 per cent of the cost of the
center if Cobb County will
provide the rest of it. The
group planned on $50,000
for a 50-child center open to
any from a low-income,
disadvantaged family.
“Besides receiving care,
the babies will be taught
basics like how to hold a
fork, wash their hands and
faces, etc. Information may
be obtained by getting in
touch with Rev. Miesel or Fr.
Morrow and any of the
Sisters of St. Thomas the
Apostle Church (436-7677.)”

difficult to obtain because
the individual parishes send
this statistical matter to the
Chancery Office to be
compiled to be sent to THE
OFFICIAL CATHOLIC
DIRECTORY.
Collection of funds for
dependent children appeared
Jan. 22, 1970; collection
results from the Inner-City
collection was printed Nov.
27, 1969; Goals for the
Charities Drive were printed
twice, once Jan. 29, 1970,
and again on Feb. 2, 1970;
the totals collected from
parishes were listed April 10,
1970. If the amount of
money collected in a parish
can be published, I see no
reason why the Catholic
population can’t be printed.
Presbyterians and
Methodists print their
statistics in a book, but only
the Harrisburg Diocese prints
the number of souls in each
parish in THE OFFICIAL
CATHOLIC DIRECTORY.
If I could see such an
article in THE GEORGIA
BULLETIN in May, I would
have much esprit de corps.
Personally I enjoy your
articles on the establishment
of new parishes, ordination of
new priests, pictures of
churches, feature articles
about parishes, the erection
and splitting of dioceses, and
anything concerning the
physical growth of
Catholicism especially in
Georgia.
There are few books
written on the Catholic
Church in the United States
and even less about Georgia.

One of the recent projects
was to collect gum wrappers
for UNICEF to use any way
they saw fit to help children.
Marist collected 2,560

for UNICEF.
The gum company
sponsored an auction and
wrappers were used as
money.
Because the number of
prizes was limited to four,
Marist only won the top four
prizes: a color television,
AM-FM radio, cassette tape
recorder, and phonograph.

Prayer For Unity
Week Jan. 18-25
By SR. JANE PELLOWSKI
Religious Unity Commission Secretary
The 1971 Week of Prayer for Unity January 18-25
emphasizes the theme of Fellowship of the Holy
Spirit.
Fellowship means that
vital union of believers which
goes out boundlessly to all
men calling them to
participate in the common
good. It is fully evident that
this vital union has not yet
been fully achieved.
Tensions arising out of
denominational adherence,
race, politics, economics, and
social class have placed us in a
position of running the risk
of isolation and exclusion.
However, it is vital to
remember that the Holy
Spirit gathers a community
together not to turn in upon
itself, but rather to be a force
that reaches out to renew and
unite all men.
The A r chdiocesan
Commission for Religious
Unity urges that the Catholic
Church of Atlanta be a
reaching community, and
initiate appropriate action
that will contribute to the
movement toward unity. The
recently published
ATLANTA ARCHDIOCESE
GUIDELINES FOR
ECUMENICAL ACTIVITY
reiterate the instruction given
to us in the Decree on
Ecumenism that: “Catholics
must make the first
approach.”
The Commission for
Religious Unity wishes to
take this opportunity to
remind our priests and people
that the GUIDELINES call
for each parish to formally
participate in a unity
observance at least once a
year. The coming WEEK OF
P R A YER is a very
appropriate time to initiate
some joint activity with a
neighboring church. This
could be a dialogue, a social
gathering or a joint worship
service. “Ecumenical services
are usually composed of
prayer, scripture reading,
hymns and homilies; they
should reflect our common
religious heritage, mutual
good will, and promotion of
unity.” (Guidelines for
Ecumenical Activity).
In coming together,
Christians realize the
fellowship that they share,
