Bishop Sentenced To
YAOUNDE, Cameroun
(NC) — A Catholic bishop has
been sentenced to death,
convicted of taking part in a
plot to kill Cameroun
President Ahmadoua Ahidjo.
Bishop Albert Ndongmo,
44, of Nkongsamba was
sentenced after a separate
trial earlier resulted in life
imprisonment for him for
plotting to overthrow the
head of state.
The sentence of life
imprisonment was passed
Dec. 30. The trial dealing
with the assassination plot
ended Jan. 5.
Sentenced to death by
firing squad for plotting to
overthrow the government
were Ernest Ouandie, leader
of the clandestine Union of
the Populations of the
Cameroun (UPC), Mathieu
Njassep, Ouandie’s lieutenant,
and Raphael Fossing.
Twenty-five persons were
charged in the first trial.
The bishop, one of 77
defendants in the second
trial, had denied any intent to
harm Ahidjo.
At the first trial Bishop
Ndongmo admitted that he
knew Gabriel Tabeu, known
as “Wambo the Runner,”
who the prosecution said
tried to kill the president
through an organization
called “The Holy Cross for
the National Liberation of
Cameroun.”
The bishop admitted
participating in the planning
of a “spiritual coup d’etat” in
which “only the angels would
act. But he added:
“At no time in my life
have I organized activity
tending to destroy the
regime. My goal was to bring
Ouandie over to legal action.”
The bishop and Ouandie
have been friends since
childhood.
Pre-trial inquiries and
police investigations reporte s
that Bishop Ndongmo, at first
merely a sympathizer with
the UPC, gradually became a
collaborator in the
movement.
Independent since 1960,
the Federal Republic of
Cameroun in West Central
Africa has been troubled
since 1955 by UPC activities.
The UPC, with support
mainly among the Bamileke
tribe, has been carrying on
guerrilla actions and has lost
several of its leaders.
An observer from the
International Movement of
Catholic Jurists (IMCJ) said:
Instruments Of Peace
More than a mood or emotion. . .more than a virtue
or ideal. . .PEACE is a disposition affecting the whole
person. The INSTRUMENTS of Peace are you and
me . . .and we can use, abuse, or refuse that instrument for
better or worse.
Three people - three “instruments of peace” come to
mind when 1 think about the missions and work and pray
each day for the dedicated missionaries serving the world’s
mission-poor. Three Teachers of Peace speak to me as I
realize more and more the “instrumental” role each one of
up plays in this great work of mission.
First, our Holy Father, called by many the Pilgrim Pope,
the Pope of Peace. And rightly so, for underlying every
prayer, address, encyclical letter, and pilgrimage or
reception is his plea for peace.
if Christ is speaking to our world today. He certainly
speaks through the voice of His Church. And how aroused
to action we should become by the prophetic words of His
Chruch’s Pilgrim Pope: “We turn to all men of good will
who believe that the way to peace lies in the area of
development.”
This “Human Development” is the. heart and backbone
of the Missions. Our devotion to the missions - our spiritual
and financial support -- is truly one personal means to be an
instrument for world peace.
The second person who can teach us the meaning of
peace and the meaning of the missions is St. Francis of
Assisi. His Prayer for Peace should be our daily Mission
Prayer.. “Lord, make ME an instrument of your
peace . . .where there is hatred let me sow love . . .injury --
pardon . . .despair - hope . . .”
It is in this fully human dimension that the Society for
the Propagation of the Faith is an instrument of peace and
your means to share in this mission of peace. An impossible
task? An unattainable ideal? Not tor a man ot faith, which
brings me to the third person.
This person is Himself the Giver and Source of
Peace .. .the Living Presence of Peace . . .the Prince of
Peace . . .Our Divine Lord. He speaks to each one of us
today in the Gospel and teaches us what it means to share
in the very life of God - to be His People, even more. His
Sons: “Happy are the Peacemakers, they shall be called the
Sons of God!”
Our’s is a catholic - universal - iaith that embraces the
whole family of man. We are a part of everyman's joy and
sorrow. It is OUR family that is poor, hungry, sick, and
needful. It is not the world crying out for peace - it is our
brother and sister.
Only our faith enables us to see people-needing-peace
through the eyes of Christ. And only each one of us can
give and live that love which makes us Sons of God --
peacemakers for Christ! Support Christ's missionaries
bringing Sservice . . .salvation . . .and peace to our world
today. Become FAMILY PEACEMAKERS for CHRIST by
joining the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (S6.00
for Yearly Family Membership - SI00.00 for Perpetual
Family Membership) this month in your parish or enclose

Death
“The two trials seem to have
proceeded in normal
conditions.”
The observer, Louis Pettiti,
a member of the council of
the French bar association,
who represented the IMCJ,
spoke in Yaounde with a
correspondent of the Paris
daily Le Monde. Also present
as observers were Giusseppe
Cassano, vice president of the
Italian Association of
Catholic Jurists, and Prof.
Martin Achard from Geneva,
representing the International
Commission of Jurists.
“The proceedings were
widely reported,” Pettiti said.
“The diplomatic corps had
access to the courtroom and
public address systems
conveyed to the outside what
each party said. We were
informed about all the items
in the file compiled during
the preliminary
investigation . . . .We were
able to meet freely with the
two principal defendants,
Ouandie and Bishop
Ndongmo. The bishop
appeared to us to be in
normal condition and he
assured us that he had
suffered no mistreatment.”
CATHOLIC BISHOP SENTENCED TO DEATH - Bishop Albert Ndongmo, 44, of Nkongsamba,
Cameroun, was sentenced to death before a firing squad by a military tribunal Jan. 6 for his
alleged role in a plot to assassinate Cameroun President Ahmadou Ahidjo. The bishop's sentence
can only be communted by Ahidjo, a Moslem who led the west African country to independence
in 1960. The Vatican has asked for clemency. (NC PHOTO)
Free, Reduced School Lunches Here
It is the policy of the
Department of Catholic
Education to provide lunches
free or at a reduced price to
those children determined by
the principal of each school
to be unable to pay the full
price for their lunches. The
policy provides that an
application form be
completed and returned to
the school. Copies of this
form have been sent home in
a letter to parents and
additional copies may be
obtained at the principal’s
office in each school. The
form itself is simple to
complete and requests
information needed to
determine economic need
based on the gross family
income and number of
persons in the family, number
of children in school or
service institutions and any
unusual circumstances or
hardships which affect the
family’s ability to pay for
school lunches. The
information provided on the
application will be
confidential and will be used
only for the purpose of
determining eligibility for
free and reduced price
lunches.
Under the provisions of the
policy, the school principal is
the local official who will
make the determination of
individual eligibility. The
following family size income
scale which the Department
of Catholic Education has
adopted for use system-wide
will be used to determine
eligibility for free and
reduced price lunches.
If a parent is dissatisfied
with the ruling of the
principal he may make a
request either orally or in
writing for a hearing to
appeal the decision. The
request should be made to
Reverend Daniel J. O’Conner
whose address is Catholic
Center, 756 West Peachtree
Street, NW, Atlanta, Georgia
30308. The hearing will be
conducted in accordance with
the procedures as outlined in
the policy statement.
The policy also provides
that there will be no
identification or
discrimination against any
student unable to pay the full
cost of a lunch.
A complete copy of the
policy is on file in' each
school and in the office of
the Secretary for Education,
Department of Catholic
Education, where it may be
reviewed by any interested
patron.

FIVE
IDEAS
FOR
THE
NEW
YEAR
YOUR
MISSION
PROJECT
FOR '71
What will 1971 be like? The world will be a more
peaceful place if everyone does his share. . . .
Last year the Holy Father trained thousands of
native priests and Sisters, built hundreds of
schools, clinics, chapels, and cared for orphans,
lepers, the aging. He can do even more in 1971
if you ask us to send full information to you,
to your friends. . . . How can you make the
world a better place? Pray for our priests and
Sisters each day, and do all you can to give
them what they need. They are your ambassa
dors to the poor, and they get lonely, hungry,
tired. Month by month in '71, have a share in
all the good they do!
What becomes of the fun and frolic New Year's
Eve? What you spend is gone the morning after.
. . . Month by month in 1971, here's what you
can do:
□ Train a native Sister overseas. She'll be your
personal representative to people who need
help, and she'll write to you. Her training costs
only $12.50 a month, $150 a year, $300 alto
gether.
□ Train a native priest. He wants to give his
life for others. For the next six years he needs
$15.00 a month ($180 a year, $1080 alto
gether). Write to us,
□ Feed a family of refugees. $10 feeds a fam
ily for a month!
□ Enroll a relative or friend a month, newborn
infants, students, the ill, in this Association.
The offering is only $2 for a year, $25 for life.
Family enrollment is only $10 a year, $100 for
life. Receive a beautiful enrollment certificate.
□ Stringless. Send a gift each month to the
Holy Father to take care of the countless num
ber of mission emergencies. He will use it where
it's needed most.
Somewhere in our 18-country mission world
you can build a complete parish plant (church,
school, rectory, and convent) for $10,000. Name
it for your favorite saint, In your loved ones'
memory. The plaque that will be erected will
request the prayers of grateful people this year
and forever for the members of your family,
living and deceased.
