Nun Talks
On Peace
Mother . Aline Batut,
superior of the Order of
Notre Dame De Sion in
Jerusalem and co-founder of
Hebrew-Arab language school
of Hebrew University, spoke
Thursday at the Cathedral
Center.
She was co-sponsored by
the Altanta Chapter of the
American Jewish Committee
and the Archdiocesan
Commission for Religious
Unity.
Born in France, she holds
four degrees, including three
from the Sorbonne. She has
served as a teacher and
Headmistress in France,
Jerusalem and Istanbul. From
1965 to 1967, she served as
Superior of the Generalate of
the Order of Notre Dame de
Sion, in Rome. In 1967, she
was assigned to her current
position at the EcceHome
Convent. The convent,
located on the Via Dolorosa
in Old Jerusalem, has become
a center for Arab-Israeli
friendship and understanding
since 1967.
In September of that year,
together with Dr. Kalman
Yaron, Director of Adult
Education at Hebrew
University, Mother Aline
established an ulpan
(language school) at the
convent, to teach Hebrew to
Arabs, Arabic to Israelis, and
both languages to Christians.
In the three years since, the
ulpan has been attended by
more than 1,000 students.
Last year, Hebrew University
granted 200 diplomas to
students who had successfully
completed its course.
Mother Aline, who is on a
year’s sabbatical leave from
her position at the Ecce
Homo Convent, plans to
spend the next 12 months
touring the United States and
Canada.
AFFLUENT SOCIETY rURNED OPULENT Over the past decade, consumers rushed to buy
items ranging from dishwashers to color TV sets, according to a current Census Bureau report, as
earnings for the average American family rose in inflation-adjust dollars from S6.900 to S9.400.
Such gains cloud the fact that poverty still remains among 10 per cent of American families, hut
even that number has decreased from the 1960 poverty total of 18 per cent. (NC PHOTO)

Did Jesus
Dig Ladies
Liberation?
NEW YORK (NC) -
“Jesus vigorously promoted
the dignity and equality of
women in the midst of a very
male-oriented society: Jesus
was a feminist, and a very
radical one.”
This is the conclusion of
Leonard Swidler, a member
of the religion department of
Temple University, in the
cover article in the January
issue of “Catholic World”
magazine published here by
the Pau lists.
Swidler, an editor of
Temple’s Journal of
Ecumenical Studies defined
feminist as “a person who is
in favor of, and who
promotes, the equality of
women with men, a person
who advocates and practices
treating women primarily as
human persons - as men are
so treated -- and willingly
contravenes social customs in
so acting.”
To prove the thesis that
Christ was a feminist, Swidler
cited biblical passages
showing that “so far as we
can tell, Jesus neither said nor
did anything which would
indicate that he advocated
treating women as
intrinsically inferior to men,
but on the contrary he said
and did things which
indicated that he thought of
women as equals of men, and
that in the process he
willingly violated pertinent
social mores.”
MARISTANA
Cagers Win Three;
Matmen Drop Rival
By Tim Prince
Avenging losses, rising in the region, and
dominating an archrival - the Marist War Eagles swept
their first three games of 1971.
Avenging three losses to
Westminster since last season,
the War Eagles dropped the
Wildcats 69-54 in a
non-region contest.
By holding Jed Allgood,
ranked 24 in Georgia, to 20
points and after double
overtime, the War Eagles
edged Sprayberry 74-67.
Coach Don Law
complimented the offense
but pointed out the defense
as a main factor.
“We were screening out the
big boys; especially helping
was Kelly Rickenbacker who
was largely responsible for
Allgood.”
Rickenbacker claimed 15
rebounds. Marist shot an
above-average 45 percent
from the field and hit 16 of
28 free throws.
Marist baske-tball
dominance over rival St. Pius
X continued Saturday night
as the Eagles pulled away in
the final quarter 69-62.
Coach Law attributed
much-of last week’s success
to two weeks of preparation
during Christmas holidays. He
indicated special mention was
due to the work and
improvements of
Rickenbacker, Cook, and
O’Shea.
Wrestling
The Blue Devils of Marietta
were faced with a brick wall
as they took on the second
rated Marist grapplers on
Friday. The War Eagles
defeated the Cobb County
team 41-3.
Four Marist men, Fred
Henritze-121 pounds, Carl
Stokes-140 lbs, Howard
Johnson-187 lbs. and Mark
Davison-heavyweight, won
their rounds with pins.
Coach Murray in remarking
about his new team
mentioned “It is a strong
team that could place in the
state finals.” Murray who has
been building for the past
three years feels that “ . . . six
of seven of these young men
are very strong contenders.”
The co-captains for the War
Eagle wrestlers for this year
are Carl Stokes and Bob
Orwig.

LETTERS
Catholic Relief
Helps Pakistan
Editor:
We have just received a letter from Rev. B.
Rodriques, director of Caritas/Chittagong, East
Pakistan, which graphically describes the plight of
relief workers trying to provide for the millions of
survivors of the recent cyclone and tidal wave there.
The area comprising this diocese makes up over 75%
of the disaster zone.
Father Rodriques states, in
part, in his letter, “I have not
received much aid up to now,
apart from the help from
Catholic Relief Services and
Caritas/Germany. Over a
month and a half has gone
since the cyclone date and I
am practically left stranded
on the rocks, and all around
me I see people in sorrow and
pain.”
Catholic Relief Services is
providing funds for
reconstructing homes,
re-supplying household
utensils and furnishing other
basic necessities of life for as
many as possible of the
300,000 surviving families,
with special emphasis on the
area of Chittagong diocese.
We have often called upon
you to mention prominently
to your readers where they
may send their donations to
further assist our efforts in
times of emergencies, and
you have always been most
responsive to our pleas. We
hesitate to ask you once
again, but the proportions of
the Pakistan disaster are such
that we would be remiss if we
did not further alert you to
these needs. We would be
greatly appreciative if you
could once again display
prominently a box in your
newspaper as a reminder to
your generous readers that
contributions to help these
survivors can be sent to
Catholic Relief Services,
Pakistan Relief Fund, 350
Fifth Avenue, Neww York,
New York 10001.
For this cooperation, and
for your continued support in
regard to our ongoing aid
programs as well as for
emergency relief, I am,
Rocco A. Sacci,
Director of Information,
New York, N.Y.
