The selection by a
magazine of Fathers Philip
and Daniel Berrigan as living
saints is the kind of action
which can engender an
instant debate, both among
Catholics and others. The
question of law and order has
been a recurring one in the
late 1960s and it has affected
ail sections of society.
The Critic magazine, in
naming the Berrigans as living
saints, has based its selection
in Church history.
In reading the life of the
fascinating Cure of Ars, St.
Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney,
one would find that he
missed his call-up to military
service because of illness.
Having thus become a
delinquent conscript, he was
obliged to go into hiding in
order to escape Napoleon’s
police.
In a similar vein, the
anti-establishment deeds of
Joan of Arc and Thomas a
Beckett are readily recalled.
And then there was the
third century St. Maximilian.
The son of a recruiting
officer, Maximilian was
extremely reluctant to enter
military service. This decision
was no doubt influenced by
the writings of Tertu Ilian
which supported the attitude
that military service was
against the Gospel precepts.
When the 21-year-old
Roman went before Dion
Cassius, procurator of Africa,
Maximilian exclaimed, “I am
a Christian, a soldier of God.
I will not fight for secular
things. Imprinted with the
seal of Christ, I will not wear
the insignia of the emperor
about my neck; and if it is
imposed on me by force, I
shall break it.”
For his rebelliousness,
Maximilian lost his head on
March 12, 295.
Although the event is
probably apocryphal, it does
have a value. From the early
days of the Church, the
question of whether a
Christian should take up arms
in defense of his country was
debated. And despite the
spuriousness of the story,
there can be little doubt that
the problem existed at that
early day.
If one were to seek some
insight into the problem from
Scripture, one obviously
would turn to Paul’s letter to
the Romans in which he
discussed obedience to civil
authority.
“Let every person be
subject to the governing
authorities. For there is no
authority except from God,
and ’those that exist have
been instituted by God.
Therefore he who resists the
authorities resists what God
has appointed, and those who
resist will incur judgment.”
(Romans 13: 1 and 2).
Similar advice for citizens
on respect for civil authority
was given by Peter in his
letter he wrote to encourage
Christians undergoing
persecution in northern Asia
Minor.
Despite the fact that Paul
enjoined subjection to the
established civil authority,
the great missionary defied
those in power when the
magistrates in Philippi
prohibited him from
preaching.
And, in another section of
the Acts of the Apostles
when the authorities sought
to suppress their witness in
Jerusalem, Peter and the
apostles answered, “We must
obey God rather than men.”
When the Pharisees sought

to entangle Jesus in politics,

The justification for the
action of the Berrigans may
be difficult to ascertain,
especially from Scripture.
Those who support or those
who oppose their activities
would each have firm
standing in the aforemen
tioned citations from the
Gospels.
Final judgment, in the case
of the Berrigans, however,
must await further
information. The New York
Times, in an editorial the day
after the indictment was
announced, described the
whole situation as “worthy of
a Graham Greene
‘entertainment.’ Indeed, like
the defection of Stalin’s
daughter, this in one of those
events which would not be
credible in the pages of a
novel. Life once again has
outdone fiction.
“The information released
by the government,” the
editorial continued, “is so
exiguous that any outside
judgment is impossible. Yet
the indictment is an
indictment, no frivolous
matter. The nation can only
await the serious evidence
which the government
presumably has to support its
accusation. The imar’nation
leaps wildly, but reason must
await the facts.”
MARISTANA
Cagers Go
9-5; Matmen
Total 3-3
Marist War Eagles lost to
Ridgeview 71-72 in overtime
last Friday and then bounced
back to thwart arch rival St.
Pius 75-63 on Saturday.
Coach Don Law’s Cagers,
now with a 9-5 season record,
faced both as revenge
matches since Marist had
earlier defeated Ridgeview
64-58 and St. Pius 69-62.
The War Eagles now face
five region contests in a row
starting with Wills this
Friday, January 29th. Marist
will face North Cobb,
Campbell of Smyrna, first
place Wheeler, and
Sprayberry also.
Wrestling
Marist once again proved
it’s supremacy for its region
by pinning Dykes Friday
night on the Colts own mat
48-5.
Marist could do no wrong
except to reverse two
decisions, while the Colts
appeared to do only one
thing right - get pinned.
Marist executed 8 pins out of
the 12 matches. For the
Marist Eagles, 1970 State
Champ Bob Orwig stayed
undefeated and unscored on
as he pinned John Yaksh in
the 159 ib. weight class. John
Yaksh is Bob’s third pinned
victim. The Eagles are now
3-3 in the season with losses
to Pepperill 31-15; Southwest
25-20; and Woodward 25-16.
Marist’s other two victories
were over Campbell of
Smyrna 26-23 and Marietta
41-3.
