Auxiliary Bishop George
Evans of Denver, director of
the housing project and
archdiocesan vicar for urban
and rural affairs, said housing
in Denver - home for a
quarter of Colorado’s
population - is extremely
critical. Of all houses and
apartments in the Denver
area, only one percent are up
for rent or sale each month.
An Archdiocesan Housing
Committee composed of an
architect, banker, realtor and
three priests was organized in
1969 to investigate the
Denver housing crisis. At that
time, a four-year loan for the
housing project was obtained
from the Prudential Life
Insurance Company - the
payment of which is insured
by the Federal Housing
Authority.
Most of the tenants in the
116 integrated housing units
so far completed pay only
$35 of the $95 in rent per
month with the federal
government providing the
archdiocese with the
additional $60 needed per
unit to keep the project open.
No archdiocesan money is
invovled in the project,
Bishop Evans said.
Other than meeting city
zoning regulations when
planning the project sites, no
serious obstacles have stood
in the way of the archdiocese,
Bishop Evans said. “Some
people think the church
should be in the pulpit,” the
bishop said, “but it’s hard to
feed and house people from
there.”

Nun Gets Sentence Stay
In Slay Talk Conviction
TRENTON, N.J. (NC) - A
nun ordered to prison for
refusing to testify in a murder
case has been granted a stay
of sentence pending the
outcome of her appeal now
before the New Jersey
Supreme Court.
Dominican Sister Margaret
Murtha, 32, who works for
Catholic Charities in Newark
and lives at St. Boniface
parish in Jersey City, spent a
night in Hudson County jail
last May when she refused to
tell a grand jury about a
conservation she had with a
17-year-old suspect in the
murder case of Harold
Conroy in Jersey City.
She then appealed to the
appellate division of the New
Jersey Appeals Court, but
was told that she did not have
the same right as a priest to
withhold information
concerning a crime.
The court declared that the
nun could not legally invoke
the privilege of a priest in
confession under state laws
and said she would face jail
for contempt of court if she
continued to refuse to testify.
In her recent appeal to the
New Jersey Supreme Court,
Sister Murtha was granted a
stay of sentence until the
higher court determines
whether it will give her a full
hearing as she has requested.
The court has r.ecessed until
November.

Prez Produces On
Pump Pledges Plan
LIMA, Peru — A promise made by President Nixon
to the residents of a working class here in 1958 has
been fulfilled - thanks to the efforts of a Maryknoll
missioner from Los Angeles.
When the then
vice-president stopped in
Lima during a 1958 Latin
American tour, he visited the
populous suburb of Gran
Cruz de Armatambo where
the U.S. government was
sponsoring a building project.
After laying a few bricks,
one of which he autographed,
the vice-president promised
to donate two water pumps
to the area, if he ever became
president.
Several months ago Father
Joseph Kearney, a U.S. parish
priest who has volunteered to
serve in a Maryknoll mission,
learned of the promise during
a visit to the area by White
House representatives.
“The residents kept
referring to the promise and
showed the visitors the brick
signed by Nixon,” Father
Kerney explained. As a
follow-up the missioner sent a
letter to the White House
reminding the President of his
promise.
Several months later, the
priest was told by the U.S.
Agency for International
Development (AID) office in
Lima, that the National
Security Council had
authorized the purchase of
two pumps for Armatambo.
“This is the highest priority
letter I’ve ever seen,” an AID
official told Father Kearney.
One pump already has
been installed. The other will
be installed when the
community finishes
construction of a reservoir.
When completed, the project
will aid some 550 families.
Priests’ Senate Eyes
Deeds And Priorities
Members of the Priests’
Senate met last week on Lake
Lanier to review past
achievements and to chart
priorities for the coming year.
In a six-hour meeting,
discussion ranged over a wide
variety of subjects, including
the need for priestly training
in the pastoral care of drug
addicts, a pension plan for
archdiocesan employees, and
a raise in clergy salaries.
Receiving heaviest emphasis
was a plan to review
archdiocesan offices and
services for the purpose of
making them more pastorally
effective.
Priests at the meeting
committed themselves to
fostering the spiritual, social,
and intellectual life of the
priests of the archdiocese in
every way possible.
The meeting was held on a
houseboat owned and
operated by Mr. Ted
LaVallee. On board were
Fathers Daniel O’Connor,
Richard Morrow, William
Hoffman, Thomas Kenny,
Henry Gracz, James
Maciejewski, Michael Woods,
Frank Ruff and Robert
Berson.
