CONTEMPORARY MISSION:
6 Press Charges
Or Apologize 9
ST. LOUIS (NC) - Five
Contemporary Mission
priests, continuing their
on-going feud with Cardinal
John J. Carberry of St. Louis,
have demanded that the
cardinal “press formal
charges” against them or
apologize for articles in the
archdiocesan newspsper
raising doubts about their
ordination.
The priests, who have been
denied faculties by Cardinal
Carberry to say Mass and
administer the sacraments in
the archdiocese, also)
demanded that the cardinal
resign and announced they
would sue the St. Louis
Review, the archdiocesan
newspaper, for libel.
“We publicly call on the
cardinal to either press formal
charges against us based on
the ‘facts’ he has presented in
the St. Louis Review, or issue
a public apology for the
outrageous behavior and
unjust treatment of his fellow
priests, the five members of
the Contemporary Mission,”
the group said in a statement
issued here.
Cardinal Carberry has
refused to grant the priests
faculties, saying that they
have not given him
information he requested
about their academic and
theological training and
conferral of clerical orders
leading to their priesthood.
The five, who serve in their
self-styled inner city ministry
here and are members of a
singing group called “The
mission,” were ordained by
Bishop Peter Sarpong of
Kumasi, Ghana, on May 11 in
Cromwell, Conn.
They are Fathers Donald
Middendorf, Robert Cassidy,
John O’Reilly, John Coyne
and Joseph Valentine.
Since the five were
elevated to the priesthood,
archdiocesan officials have
released to the Review
controversial documents
surrounding the priests’
ordination.
Among the documents
were letters officialy
recommending the priests for
ordination, which were
denounced as forgeries by
persons alleged to have signed
them.
The archdiocesan officals
also released documents of
the priests’ alleged academic
training, which St. Louis
University spokesmen said
were not official university
transcripts, and a letter from
Bishop Sarpong saying he did
not incardinate-- accept- the
five into his diocese.
The Contemporary Mission
has denied any knowledge of
the alleged forgeries, although
Bishop Sarpong said they
were contained in documents
presented to him by Father
Patrick J. Berkery, the
priests’ director.
The priests charged in their
statement that the letters are
bogus and were published in
the Review to descredit them.
“Though he purported to
make no formal charges of
any kind, the cardinal caused
the Contemporary Mission to
be implicated in alleged
forgeries,” the statement said.
“He has attempted to
discredit through insidious
innuendo the responsibility
and credibility of this new
community in the Church.
All members of the
Contemporary Mission
hereby totally reject the
cardinal’s unfounded and
un-Christian attempt to
implicate them in the origins
or use of these letters.”
Bp. Sheen Views 4 Jesus
People’ With Optimism
NEW YORK (NC) -
Retired Archbishop Fulton J.
Sheen took an optimistic
view of the “Jesus people”
movement which is spreading
predominantly among the
nation’s youth.
In an article in the Aug. 8
issue of The New York
Times, the archbishop
asserted: “It is facile to
question the sincerity of the
“Jesus people” and to
attribute it to a ‘belated hero
worship of a fellow rebel.’
But the new youth, unlike
the ‘old youth’ of three years
ago, are not looking to Him
as a rebel, but as a salvation.”
The archbishop said the
young “may be discovering
Jesus outside the church, as
did their elders, Henri
Bergson, Simone Weil and
Malcolm Muggeridge.”
The movement sprouted,
the archbishop wrote, after
nuns had discarded their
familiar habits for modern
dress; “when the rosary as a
devotion was dropped” and
hippies put beads around
their necks; when “youth
sought the ectasy not through
the long haul of asceticism,
but the short trip through
pharmaceuticals,” and when
discipline was dropped from
seminaries, schools and
convents.
“Why cannot the churches
rejoice and not look down
their noses at youpeople who
are becoming pure and
disaddicted because a new
love has come into their
lives?” Archbishop Sheen
asked.

TINY CHURCH - In modem downtown Athens, Greece, this
tiny church, perhaps the smallest in the world, has been
surrounded by a large shopping center. Despite the fact that it is
dwarfed and often hidden from view by the six story building
for which it acts as cornerstone, the Church of Divine Power
often attracts local inhabitants for a moment of prayer to and
from their day’s work. (NC PHOTO)
US Methodists Praised
For ‘Articles’ Change
VATICAN CITY (NC) -
The Vatican has published a
letter praising the general
conference of the United
Methodist Church in the
United States for going on
record in favor of changing
long-term anti-Catholic
interpretations contained in
its “Articles of the Book of
Discipline.”
The letter, published in the
Vatican City daily,
L’Osservatore Romano, Aug.
3, was written to Dr. Wesley
Hole, secretary general of the
general conference, by
Cardinal Jean Villot, papal
secretary of state. The
cardinal said Pope Paul VI
“has received with deep
Christian joy” the news of
the conference’s decision.
The undated letter refers
to a decision made by the
general conference in April,
1970, to review the
interpretations of the
“Articles” which over the
centuries have carried on the
anti-Roman sentiments of the
Reformation period.
Cardinal Villot said in his
letter: “By this generous and
farsighted action you disavow
not the honorable history of
Methodist Christian witness,
but the bitterness and harsh
controversy which in the past
have so often affected in
Christians even their zeal for
the Gospel of Christ.
“At the same time you
offer in this resolution
‘tokens of the effort to repair
the ancient breaches of
charity and mutual
understanding’ - the effort of
which, in these happier days,
all of us feel is part of our
very faithfulness to Christ our
Lord and which was
expressed many times in the
Second Vatican Council.”
Commenting recently on
the resolution, Canon William
Purdy of the Vatican’s
Secretariat for Promoting
Christian Unity, stated the
resolution opened “a new
chapter” in the history of the
Methodist Church. “The
earlier chapters are not
cancelled,” he said. “But
WOMPI - Mrs. Marilyn
Craddock of Christ the King
Cathedral Parish, was recently
named Woman of the Year by
the Atlanta chapter of
WOMPI, [Women of the
Motion Picture Industry,
International. Mrs. Craddock
is currently serving as
president of the Atlanta
WOMPI which supports the
Little Five Points Extension
of the Atlanta Girls Club,
among other projects, and as
instrumental in bringing the
Georgia Mountain Arts Co-Op
Craft Store to Atlanta. The
Co-Op is one of the
beneficiaries of the Bishops’
Fund.
more effectively than quietly
dropping them, the
conference solemnly
repudiated the traditional,
polemical interpretation of
the Articles.”
Publication of the letter
comes shortly before the
opening of the World
Methodist Council, which
meets only once every five
years. The meeting will be
held Aug. 18-26 at Denver
and will be addressed by
Cardinal Jan Willebrands,
president of the Christian
Unity secretariat. It is
expected that the resolution
will be introduced during that
meeting.

other obligations of the
priesthood. It was not
intended for publication but
was circulated among the
world’s bishops, presumably
in preparation for this
autumn’s world Synod of
Bishops. One of the principal
items on the synod’s agenda
is problems of the priesthood.
Statistics from the study
were published in newspapers
in Italy, France and the
United States. Although the
book was printed and
circulated months ago, these
reports were published
recently and virtually
simultaneously. Although the
book contains thousands of
figures, these published
reports cited the same dozen
or so statistics. Such facts
argue that leakage came from
a single source.
Among the statistics cited
were:
--That 8,287 priests
requested relief from their
priestly obligations between
1963 and March 31,1969.
-That an unknown number
(thought to hover around
2,800) departed without
dispensations during that
period.
-That in 1969 more than
95 percent of departing
priests put forward celibacy
as a cause of departure. In
about 75 percent of
dispensations studied celibacy
was the principal cause and in
about 25 percent a
contributing cause (figures
which would make celibacy a
factor in every departure).

-That in 1969, just under
25 percent advanced refusal
to accept present
ecclesiastical discipline as a
reason, and less than 5
percent advanced loss of faith.
The figures also noted a
sharp decline in the number
of civil marriages entered into
by priests: from 53 percent
of those who left in 1964 to
25 percent in 1969. This is
ascribed to a progressive
relaxation in the once-severe
discipline on dispensations,
and greater speed in issuing
them.
The study was prepared by
Msgr. Emilio Colagiovanni, an
official of the doctrinal
congregation who has
specialized in marriage cases.
The Vatican’s central
statistical office cooperated
in the study.
An authoritative Vatican
source said the information
published in the press
corresponds substantially
with Msgr. Colagiovanni’s
study. However, he raised
some question about the
accuracy of the statistics
contained in the study itself,
pointing out that various
figures submitted to the
Vatican by diocesan
authorities throughout the
world are often obtained by
outdated or haphazard
methods and do not enjoy a
reputation for accuracy.
He said the book would
probably be published once
the world’s bishops have
submitted their opinions on
the value-judgments
expressed in it.
