NATION
NEW YORK (NC) -
Thirteen major religious
organizations, including the
National Catholic Conference
for Interracial Justice and the
National Coalition of
American Nuns, are
attempting to kill the death
penalty.
They are urging the U.S.
Supreme Court to rule the
death penalty unconstitution
al when it hears the cases of
four condemned men in its
next session. The mens’
petitions raise the issue of the
eighth amendment clause
against cruel and unusual
punishment.
If their petitions fail, it
may clear the way for
execution of some 675 men
and women now on death
rows around the country. In a
friend-of-the-court brief, the
church groups argued that
“life ought not to stand
forfeit upon human
judgments. Such judgments
are necessarily fallible.”

WASHINGTON (NC) -
By Mary Lynberg
Ok, gals, it’s our turn to repay the favor! We may
get to tag along after our husbands at a convention or
business trip. Now take him along!
This is what the ladies had
in mind when they set up
Atlanta ACCW convention up
at Dalton, that’s on Saturday
and Sunday, Sept. 18 and 19.
Just think, you can
combine a little business and
pleasure. Just to sort of bribe
the men, a golf game is
planned for Saturday
morning. And since Dalton is
known for the carpet mills, of
course a tour through one is a
MUST.
Course there will be the
business meetings and we can
pick up some pointers at the
workshops that will be held
at the Dalton Junior College.
No convention is complete
without a banquet, after
which the ladies have planned
a social.
Sorry, no breakfast in bed,
but think “sun” so you can
enjoy the poolside brunch.
Sound like fun? There will be
a lot of insight gained by us
all. Check with your deanery
representatives about
reservations.
Maybe hubby has decided
to give you a break and stay
home and babysit. They are
planning on a chartered bus,
so you can really sit back,
relax and chat away! But ya’ll
come.

Spanish-speaking groups in
Puerto Rico and Texas and a
national organization of
Mexican-American priests
each received more than
$100,000 in grants from the
U.S. bishops’ anti-poverty
Campaign for Human
Development.
Campaign officials,
announcing the third
disbursement in the $8.5
million anti-poverty effort,
said here that 59 grants
totalling $1,357,129 have
been funded.
Heading the list was the
Loiza citizens’ group of San
Juan, Puerto Rico, which
received a $197,836 grant for
a large scale program
encompassing social
development, housing,
education and health. The
Military Highway Water
Supply Corp., based in San
Benito, Tex., was granted
$180,000 to provide drinking
water to 3,600 mostly
Mexican-American families
living in parched areas in
South Texas’ lower Rio
Grande Valley. PADRES, a
group of Mexican-American
priests, was funded $100,000
to develop community
leadership among Chicanos in
Western and Southwestern
states.
CINCINNATI (NC) -
Church institutions should
not use their limited income
as a reason for refusing to
recognize unions formed by
their employes, a Cincinnati
archdiocesan official said
here.
And unions should
understand that such
institutions - because of their
financial situations -- cannot
meet the same demands asked
of private industry, said
William R. Schumacher, the
archdiocese’s social actions
program director, in a Labor
Day statement.
“The problems of arriving
at equitable labor contracts
between the employes of
religious institutions and their
employers should not be used
as an excuse to deny the right
of employes to organize
which has been set forth and
defended by the Catholic
Church for more than 80
years,” he said.
LIMA, Peru (NC) — The
Peruvian Bishops’ Conference
is supporting moves by
President Juan Velasco
Alvarado to have France stop
its nuclear bomb tests in the
South Pacific.
Peruvian authorities claim
that nuclear explosions at
Murora in the French
archipelago of Tuamotu are
polluting the ocean,
disrupting the South
American ocean bed and
killing valuable schools of
fish. Peru’s large fishing
industry depends on fish
migrations from the South
Pacific.
PANAMA CITY (NC) -
The bishops of Panama
denounced what they charge
is a systematic government
campaign to intimidate
Catholic officials, priests and
lay leaders following the
kidnaping of a priest last
June.
Authorities, the bishops
said, not only failed to
investigate the crime against
Father Hector Gallegos,
pastor of Santa Fe in rural
Veraguas province, but are
also using public agencies and
communications media to
attack the Church.
A pastoral letter signed by
the seven bishops of Panama
and read in more than 100
parishes accused the regime
of Gen. Omar Torrijos of
“attempting to give the
impression that the Holy See
is withdrawing its support for
the Church in Panama” in the
Father Gallegos affair.
TORONTO, Ont. (NC) -
Saving 100,000 babies from
abortion is the 1972 goal of
Birthright International, a
volunteer service organization
helping distressed pregnant
women.
This target was cited as
100 persons from the United
States and Canada attended
the organization’s first
international meeting at St.
Augustine’s College here.

NEW YORK (NC) -
Father Laurence H. Gibney,
chaplain for 11 years at the
Manhattan House of
Detention, has left the prison
to return to his boyhood
parish in Harriman, N.Y.
He told The Catholic
News, New York
archdiocesan newspaper, that
he plans to continue his fight
for prison reform while a
pastor in Harriman. Inside the
Manhattan House of
Detention, known as the
Tombs, his post will be
carried on by Father John
O’Leary. Father O’Leary has
been on the guidance staff at
a Manhattan high school.
“Eleven years as chaplain is
much too long,” Father
Gibney said of his turbulent
chaplaincy which he admits
has left him with a burned
out feeling at age 42.
