Pope Again Appeals
For Ireland Peace
CASTELGANDOLFO,
Italy (NC) — Pope Paul VI
appealed again for peace in
Northern Ireland during a
noon talk Sept. 5 at his
summer residence here.
“We cannot forget in our
prayer the new developments
of violence in Northern
Ireland, which have even
killed a 17-month-old baby.
We earnestly pray that this
innocent blood is effective in
obtaining from God a true
and just calming of
attitudes,” the Pope said.
The previous Sunday, Aug.
29, the Pope had devoted his
entire discourse to the
troubles in the six counties of
Northern Ire land,
commenting that the
imprisonment without trial
ordered there was resented by
“at least some of the
citizens.”
In that first appeal, the
Pope asked Northern Irish
Catholics and Protestants to
find unity in their common
Christian belief. He also said
he hoped his plea would
“find in all a ready and
generous response so that the
country may be spared other
sad trials.”
Vatican Denies Any Involvement
In Eva Peron Burial In Italy
VATICAN CITY (NC) -
The Vatican says it was not
involved in any way in the
burial of Eva Peron in Italy.
“It is denied that the Holy
See concerned itself in
matters regarding the body,”
commented Federico
Alessandrini, Vatican press
spokesman, in response to
Italian newspaper reports that
Pope Pius XII had been
instrumental in letting the
wife of Argentina’s
ex-dictator be buried in Italy.
The Vatican had initially
maintained a no-comment
attitude.
The body of Mrs. Peron,
wife of the one-time
Argentine dictator Juan
Peron, was removed from a
cemetery in Milan, where it
had been buried under a false
name, and shipped to Spain
under consignment to Peron,
who lives in exile near
Madrid.
Eva Peron died in
Argentina in 1952. Her body
disappeared from the country
shortly after the political
coup of 1955 which toppled
Peron. The whereabouts of
the body has been speculated
on for years.
It was reportedly spirited
out of the country because
the beautiful blonde Evita,
even in death, was a political
problem. Millions of
Argentine workers and poor
venerated her as the spiritual
mother of her country.
Rumors have persisted over
the years that her body was
brought to Italy and buried in
a cemetery somewhere on the
outskirts of Rome. But no
conclusive proof was
produced until after the body
arrived in Madrid on Sept. 3.
It was then learned that the
body has been buried in
Milan’s biggest graveyard
under a false name..
About press reports of
Pope Pius’ intervention, the
Vatican would say only:
“There is nothing to say.”
In the meantime, civil
authorities have begun an
investigation to learn how it
was possible for a body to be
shipped to Italy from a
foreign country, buried in
possibly more than one
cemetery under a false name,
and then shipped out of the
country again without proper
papers and authorization.

Magazines Pushed;
Gridders Shoved
BY GEORGE RODRIGUE
The Marist student council kicked off its annual
magazine subscription drive last week and council
president John Attanasio is optimistic about the
results.
“I think that it’ll turn out
better than last year, due to
our better preparations.
Actually, though, it all
depends on the students and
the leadership of the
representatives,” he said.
The “preparations” were in
the form of a skit, written by
Attanasio and Mark
Hennessy. Mike Faas
produced the three act play
which described all the facts
concerning the drive through
a series of humorous
“shorts.”
In another effort to
improve the returns the
school brought the Readers’
Digest Associates in to
sponsor the drive. They offer
improved service and sales
incentive programs, in
addition to guaranteeing
every subscription and
offering a greater selection of
publications than any other
company of its kind.
The drive is very important
to the council’s program as it
is the sole source of income
for the many projects it
supports. These include the
homecoming festivities, the
various dances held
throughout the year, and the
gift the council presents
annually to the school. In the
words of Attanasio, “A good
sale means the difference
between excellent or crummy
extracurricular activities.”
The goal for this year is
$7,000, or a three thousand
dollar profit. The drive ends
Sept. 24.
UPSET
Marist’s regular season
winning streak was halted at
twelve games last week as the
Westminster Wildcats scored a
7-0 upset victory at Kent
Field.
All points resulted from a
15 yard touchdown run by
Westminster quarterback Jim
Pressley in the first quarter.
The score was set up by
Pressley’s 25 yard toss to
Charlie Brake on third down.
Brake’s PAT was good, and it
was Westminster 7, Marist 0.
The loss evened the Eagles’
season record at 1-1.
