Luther’s Excommunication Stays
Editor:
I am very disappointed
Atlanta Youth Day (Sept.
9th issue.
This opportunity to
recognize our youth was
authorized by Mayor Sam
Massell, and widely
publicized by the Christian
Council of Metropolitan
Atlanta. Still THE GEORGIA
BULLETIN ignored it! Your
silence is regrettably vocal in
saying; “we are not interested
in youth and youth days.”
I had hoped, like others
working with youth, to find a
positive message for youth in
this week’s paper. An
emphasis on Christ’s great
concern for youth; a
reminder of youth’s new role
in the Church; a re-cap of the
services offered by the Youth
Division of the Bishop’s
office would have been most
appropriate.
Youth Day for me was a
wonderful opening to
encourage youth and witness
my trust in them. Other
Churches saluted their youth
in special services.
In response to the
challenge of Youth Day,
2,000 Boy Scouts
participated in an
encampment orientated on
their Fall project S.O.A.R.
(Save Our American
Resources). While in St.
Jude’s Parish the dynamic
Y.C.S. group there celebrated
by planning another great
to find no reference to
12th) in your September
project, like their recent
involvement in Swing Things
to Playgrounds .. .just to
mention two examples of
what Youth Day meant. Yes,
our youth are really moving.
Let’s recognize them, and
give credit where credit is
due.

VATICAN CITY (NC) - A
suggestion by a group of
German Catholics that the
Holy See lift the 450-year-old
excummunication of Martin
Luther has been turned
down.
The Catholic group from
Worms, Germany, made the
suggestion last April that the
excommunication of the
Protestant Reformation
leader be lifted in connection
with the 450th anniversary of
Luther’s refusal to appear
before the Court of Nobles in
Worms.
Cardinal Jan Willebrands,
head of the Vatican’s
Christian Unity secretariat,
has informed the group by
letter that such a move at so
late a date “would not seem
practically possible nor
opportune.”
Msgr. Jean-Francois
Arrighi, an undersecretary of
the unity secretariat, said it
was decided to take no action
on the suggestion because “it
would be meaningless.” He
explained: “one doesn’t lift
an excommunication of
someone who has been dead
for more than 400 years.”
Msgr. Arrighi added,
however, that some Italian
papers which interpreted the
decision as a “reaffirmation”
of the excommunication
“missed the point.” He said
the cardinal’s letter was “in
no way to be understood as a
confirmation of the
excommunication” but
simply as a routine reply to a
letter from the Catholic
group that made the
suggestion in the first place.

Ever wondered what happens to the clothes tossed
so casually into the yawning jaws of the St. Vincent
dePaul boxes? Well, for one thing all those clothes
have to be sorted and the good usable clothing and
furniture is sent to the store at 444 Edgewood Ave.
Repairable, out of season and washable soiled
clothing is sent to Central State Hospital for
distribution through their Apparel Shop. Those items
not usable are sold for rags.

Now back to the reason for
telling you this - there is a
dire need for volunteers to
assist in preparing the
donated clothing for sale. The
work is simple and consists of
sorting, folding and boxing
clothing. It doesn’t sound like
much does it? Yet the need is
there and except for a
faithful few, the volunteers
are few and far between.
The store on Edgewood
helps the people in the
deprived areas in so many
ways - the store is a place
where they can shop just as
you do at Saks Fifth Ave.,
Richs or K-Mart. You pay
what you can afford - they do
too. The prices are very low
and the store is open to
everyone. The sales pay for
rent, insurance, salaries, etc.
The store also employs
neighborhood citizens, golden
age folks and occasionally
transients by means of meal
tickets and clothing. In an
average day the store may
employ several such people -
but there is only so much
that can be done without
volunteer help.
Surely some of you reading
this have a few hours free
even one day a month. Why
not give your soul a coffee
break and spend those hours
at St. Vincent dePaul. If
you’re not interested in
sorting or boxing there are
other jobs available: Display
work, selling, repairs and
painting of items received. As
you can see there is
something for everyone.
The need is urgent. For
