HARRISBURG, Pa. (NC) -
Gov. Milton J. Shapp’s has
vetoed a strict anti-abortion
bill and has angered
proponents of the bill who
accused him of consigning
thousands of unborn children
to death.
Shapp has first invited the
legislature to recall the bill
and spare him the need to
veto it.
He argued that the bill was
so restrictive that it was
unenforceable. He said that
because the bill would have
prohibited all abortions
except to save the mother’s
life “it was a threat to the
rights of our women.”
His main objection was
that the bill did not provide
for abortions in cases of rape
or incest. “I say again that
there is no man in
Pennsylvania who will stand
by idly and permit his wife,
daughter, sister or even
mother to be a victim of such
a situation,” he said.

The Pennsylvania Catholic
Conference was sharply
critical of the governor’s
action. Howard H.
Fetterhoff, the conference’s
executive director, accused
Shapp of not keeping a
pledge to preserve the life of
the unborn.
“Despite his knowledge
that Pennsylvania’s present
abortion statue, by virtue of
its alleged vagueness and
flagrant abuse in allowing
thousands of abortions each
year in some Pennsylvania
hospitals, the governor vetoed
a bill that would have
stopped this carnage,”
Fetterhoff said.
Shapp responded to critics
who accused him of
forgetting his campaign
pledge two years ago to
preserve the life of the
unborn.
“I am concerned about the
unborn,” he said. “But I am
also concerned about the
women of Pennsylvania. In
my opinion, House Bill 800
does not strike at a fair and
rational balance between the
two,” the governor said.
Shapp also said that the
bill “does not attack, in any
way, one of the most tragic
issues of our time, the
problem of unwanted,

abandoned and uncared for

Fetterhoff countered that
the governor’s words
“embody the most twisted
and perverse rhetoric of the
abortion establishment” in
suggesting that the bill should
have allowed for the abortion
of unwanted children.
“Today in this
commonwealth,” said
Fetterhoff, “most married
couples who cannot have
children of their own, cannot
find a child to adopt. Yet the
Shapp message criticizes
House Bill 800 and suggests
that the only alternative to
the problem of the unwanted
child is abortion.”
Fetterhoff said the task of
those in Pennsylvania who are
committed to defend the
unborn is to find 34
additional House Members
and 34 senators “who will
pass another bill to outlaw
needless abortion in
Pennsylvania.”
In this way they would be
able to override another
Shapp veto which Fetterhoff
believes would be virtually
certain. “This clearly will not
be easy but it is far from
impossible,” Fetterhoff said.
NEW YORK -- Episcopal Bishop Paul Moore, Jr., of
New York was robbed at knife-point of $75 in his
wallet in Central Park last Columbus Day (Oct. 9), it
was disclosed in New York. The onetime Marine
confirmed to THE NEW YORK TIMES that three young
men took about $75 from him as he walked along a
main road in the park. He said he was wearing secular
dress and walking south near 107th Street when the
three youths, whom he estimated to be 19 or 20 years
old, asked him the time of day. “When I started to
look at my watch,” he said, “they surrounded me. One
of them held a knife but not at my throat or
anything.” The 53-year-old bishop, formally installed
earlier this year, said the wallet, minus the money, was
returned to him when he asked for it. He said he
mentioned the holdup to a patrolman on Fifth Avenue
but never filed a formal complaint with the local police
precinct.
Book Answers Basic Questions
BY TERESA GERNAZIAN
If you are in a rut, or
would like to grow
spiritually, try reading a
book. So many people are
falling in love with
BEYOND OURSELVES by
Catherine Marshall.
Through the relating of
colorful personal experiences
the author offers hope and
encouragement for those
perplexed with such
questions as: Why does God
allow the tragic death of a
loved one? How do we find
God’s guidance in difficult
decisions? Is it wrong to
dream and pray for material
success?
Mrs. Marshall tells about
the death of her husband, the
world famous minister, in this
way: “Surely there is a
difference (and it is not just a
quibble) between God’s ideal
will and his permissive will.
Thus, in my case, I cannot
believe that it was God’s ideal
will that Peter Marshall die at
46. But given a certain set of
circumstances - among them
Peter’s inherited physique, so
fine that he was inclined to
overtax it - God had an
alternate plan by which He
could bring unimagined good
even out of early death.”
Then, in following God’s
alternate plan, Catherine
Marshall was soon to inspire
millions the world over with
her best-seller, A MAN
CALLED PETER.
She also relates the
experience of an older
woman who lost her only
child as a teenager from
diabetes shortly before the
discovery of insulin. After
begging God for the grace to
answer her son’s
heart-breaking question:
“Mother, what is it like to
die,” the woman compared
death to the times he had
played so hard as a very
young boy that he would
tumble into his mother’s bed
and fall asleep. In the
morning he would wake up
and find he was in his own
bed.
“You were there,” she
said, “because someone had

loved you and had taken care
of you. Your father had come
with his great strong arms
and carried you away.” Tne
grace of being able to answer
her son’s question was the
greatest thing God could have
given the woman, if for some
reason a healing was not to
be. Those on the inside of
tragedy often experience
something outsiders may not:
the love of God - instant,
continuous, real - in the midst
of their trouble. With the
presence of the Giver, they
have something more
precious than any gift He
might bestow.
Other topics artfully
covered are: the gospel of
healing, with details of her
own miraculous cure from a
three-year bout with
tuberculosis; trusting God
completely in financial needs;
ego slaying; forgiving; and
how to make that glorious
journey into joy.
