WE’LL
DO YOUR
CHRISTMAS
SHOPPING
THE HOLY FATHER’S MISSION AID TO THE ORIENTAL CHURCH
Christmas is Christ's Birthday. This year, to
show Him you love Him, give your presents to
the poor. . . . For instance, train a boy for the
priesthood. We’ll send you his name, he’ll write
to you, and you may stretch payments to suit
your own convenience ($15.00 a month, $180 a
year, $1,080 for the entire six-year course). The
friend who has everything, if you sponsor a
seminarian in his name, will appreciate this
more than a gift he doesn’t need. We’ll send
your friend our attractive Gift Card before
Christmas, telling him what you have done. . . .
Or sponsor a Sister-to-be ($12.50 a month, $150
a year, $300 altogether), a homeless child ($14
a month), or feed a refugee family for two
weeks ($5). Your friend will be pleased you
thought of someone else when you remembered
him. . . . Please write to us today to be sure
the Gift Cards reach your friends before Christ
mas. We'll send the cards as soon as we hear
from you.

Prison: What It’s Like
BY ROYCE MITCHELL
(EDITOR’S NOTE: Royce Mitchell is a member of Atlanta’s Sacred Heart parish who joined the Catholic
Church in 1968. Shortly thereafter he gave up a successful career as a trucking executive to study for the
priesthood.
Now 48 years of age, he is a student at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, where in his spare time he
serves as a prison chaplain.
After his ordination next year, he hopes to continue his prison ministry as a priest of the Archdiocese of New
Orleans.
He offers to GEORGIA BULLETIN readers the following reflections on his experience as a prison chaplain.)
It is difficult for anyone to
describe “the criminal.”
However, I shall attempt it.
First of all, he is a human
being and needs to be treated
like one. Secondly, he is an
emotionally disturbed person
with deep-rooted
psychological problems which
have led him into his criminal
behavior.
I have not dealt with or
counseled an inmate who has
had pleasant and enduring
family relationships in his
adolescent years. The
opposite is true. Usually he is
from a broken home, or one
in which one or both parents
are dead. So many have never
had the needed fatherly
affection because the father
has either been separated
from the family because of
work, or lacks interest in his
family.
We dealt with so many
runaway kids who ended up
addicted to heroin or charged
with drug-related crimes. The
inmate has fear and despair
deeply etched into his
emotional make-up, and it
shows in his eyes and on his
face. He is afraid for his life
on the tier and on the street.
Remove his from his peers,
and he will open up to you if
he finds grounds for trust,
and he can shed tears like a
baby.
He does not know how to
shake hands with a person,
and it startles him when you
extend your hand to him. He
is a loner, in prison and on
the street, and he doesn’t
have any friends. The only
love that he has known in his
life is physical. Love is just
another word for sex. He has
deep need for his family; yet
usually he has severed all ties
with his family or he finds
himself disowned by them
because of his actions.
He knows that he has done
wrong and committed a
crime; he does not deny this.
But he does expect to be
treated justly as a human
being. He does not like to be
“messed over” by the police,
the prison officials and the
courts. He wants and expects
a fair shake from each of
them. He hates to be
dependent upon free legal
aide, but he does expect
proper attention from them. I
have had several inmates ask
me why I wasted by time
with them, that they were
hopeless cases. But in the
next breath, they said that
the chaplains were the only
people who really cared
about them. When an inmate
tells you that you are the
only one he can trust or when
he expresses thanks for
helping him, you have gone a
long way with him as an
individual.
It is most difficult,
to work spiritually with the
inmates in their prison
setting. All their lives they
have been told that they are
no good. They have been
taught that God is a big bad
Father who punishes people
who don’t behave. Their only
prayer concept is one in
which they have asked God
for a favor and He didn’t
grant it. So He doesn’t answer
prayers and so it doesn’t do
any good to pray.
Under these conditions
it is difficult to ad
minister to the inmate’s
spiritual needs. Contrary to
what one would think of the
role of a prison chaplain, one
does not go around preaching
the Good News or trying to

convert the guys. This is the
quickest way to turn them
off and become the most
ineffective chaplain in the
prison system.
You must first be
accepted, and only through
your sincerity, trust, and the
way you handle yourself will
you be able to establish a
rapport with the inmates. In
the meantime you are tested
to see if you are really a part
of the establishment. I found
in working with the inmates
that they trusted and
respected the Roman collar
regardless of their religious
background, training or
belief. The guys would open

up to me before they would
with one of the Protestant
chaplains because the
Protestants wore business
suits. In working with
inmates we never knew their
religious affiliations unless
they told it to us; this was
our last concern. I have dealt
with every type of believer,
and one of the Black Panthers
taught me their handshake.
