PAGE 3—The Georgia Bulletin, January 18,1973
Explanation asked .. .
Dear Editor:
Reference the GEORGIA
BULLETIN, 14 December
1972.
Request explanation of
line 1, paragraph 2, under
column entitled “Role Gall”
by Fr. John Adamski, i.e.,
“You won’t find us in the
pages of PLAYBOY (we can’t
afford that.)” And if you feel
as I do, kindly request a
public apology in the pages of
the GEORGIA BULLETIN to
the hundreds of wonderful
Catholic parents, students,
and readers of this
publication. I think this is
below our dignity, decency or
humor.
Since paragraph 5, last line,
indicates the writer considers
that “each person reading this
column is an important part
of that process,” then in
Christian charity, may I say I
hope and pray the 1973 drive
for vocations will be
successful and that those
priests and nuns conducting
the vocation programs care
enough to show the world
their consecration to God by
wearing their beautiful habits
of religious, and that more
emphasis will be placed on
the glory of serving God by
following in the footsteps of
our Blessed Lord, and less on
service and leadership-since
all of us possess these
qualities to some degree, but
few of us are really chosen to
enter the religious life.
Now, on page 9 of this
same edition, under heading
“Defining Just War Is A
Waste of Time,” in which a
German Redemptorist Fr. B.
Haring defines or gives his
opinion of war, marriage,
ecumenism. Is this article
supposed to show the reader
all sides? It is most confusing,
and perhaps Fr. Haring is
confused far more than those
of us who managed to read
him through. And, I wonder,
is this the type theology His
Eminence John Cardinal
Wright referred to rather
recently when he stated (as
best I recall the actual words)
“Faith is what God gives us;
theology is what you think it
is, if you think at all.” This
type thinking (Fr. Haring’s)
wouldn’t inspire me to think
“vocation to the religious
life” nor would it strengthen
my love of God.
With about 100
advertisements in this edition
alone, it does not leave much
space for religious and parish
news does it. Therefore, let’s
pray 1973 will see a greater
diocesan paper than ever
before, dedicated to the glory
of God.
I have read Fr. Adamski’s
column over a number of
times within the past two
weeks, and I still feel we are
due an apology. As to
whether the Almighty was
very pleased with the
contents, I’ll leave that to
Him, but I personally think
the lack of spiritual appeal is
pathetic.

Vietnam aid . . .
Dear Father:
I am enclosing a letter
from the Bishop of Kontum,
South Viet Nam, Paul L.
Seitz, which speaks for itself.
I understand that the only
aid these people get is from
private charities and I
thought perhaps some of
your readers might like to
help these poor people.
Contributions will reach
Bishop Seitz by the following
address: Most Reverend Paul
L. Seitz, Diocese of Kontum
(South Viet-Nam), c/o Box
507, Nashua, N. H. 03060,
U.S.A.
ANNE MORRIS
DECATUR, GA.
(The bishop’s letter
follows:)
Dear Mrs. Morris,
The last time I wrote you
it was not possible to say
anything concerning our
situation in Kontum.
Everything was fluctuating
from day to day and none of
us knew what the outcome of
the fighting would be.
I am sure you will be glad
to hear that as I write we are
still here, working in our own
Diocese, although our
problems are greater than
ever. Many of our buildings
have been destroyed and we
have an enormous influx of
refugees.
The lives of these poor
people seem filled with
sorrow - families separated,
children orphaned, homes
destroyed. They are
confident we will help them
in their distress and we are
doing all we can with the
resources we have.
Through all the
uncertainty and horror of
the recent fighting the
knowledge that we have
friends like you has sustained
us. Your prayers have
protected us and we thank
God we are able to continue
our work of rescue and
comfort among our
Montagnard and South
Vietnamese people.
Mrs. Morris, it is impossible
for me to convey the
desperate need for your help
to tend the sick and feed the
hungry. Rice now costs about
$25 a sack and everything
else has gone up in price as
well.
One of the first projects we
will begin when the money
can be found is to build two
big communal homes for the
poorest of our people. We
pledge ourselves, our hands,
our sweat and labors, to
rebuilding all that has been
destroyed and once again I
ask you to give us your
approval of efforts by sending
a donation.
Remember us in your
prayers - we shall not forget
you.

BISHOP OF KONTUM
Fire and Brimstone . . .
Dear Editor:
Our bishops and priests
should let us hear more “fire
and brimstone” sermons and
“say it like it is.” The Bible
tells us that “the fear of the
Lord is the beginning of
wisdom.” Man, and woman,
must recognize he will gain
heaven only through doing
the Lord’s will and keeping
His Commandments. We seem
to discount the whole
message of the Bible these
days, concentrating on
objectives of social progress,
worthy as they are, but
failing to emphasize the
consequence of not heeding
the Lord’s word on our
obligation to our brothers
and the keeping of all the
commandments.

Com* In and S** Our Ho us* of Callings
We know life has both
pleasure and suffering. There
is joy and sorrow, good and
evil and virtue and vice. There
will also be an eternal reward
and an eternal punishment.
We seem to be forgetting our
salvation must merited and
that a just and merciful God
is our judge at the time of our
death and the second coming
of Jesus. We should not
concentrate on the message
of Christ’s promises and
ignore our failure to do His
will as outlined in the Bible
and by His Church. It is the
fear of the Lord that will save
many.
Man, because of his fallen
nature, is inclined to think of
his own interests and
instincts. Talking about love
and the problems of those
less fortunate will not
stimulate the majority but
greater progress in this area
would result if he recognized
that his failure “to feed the
hungry, clothe the naked”
etc. and lead a moral life
would lead to an eternal
punishment.
The world, the weaknesses
of the flesh and the devil
cause us to center on human
temporal progress. Not
enough concentration takes
place on man’s spiritual
welfare and the salvation of
his soul. The relief of human
suffering, the love of one
another is Christ’s message.
His grace, however, is not in
all of us to some degree.
Those pushing social progress
and the relief of human
suffering know only through
God’s grace in man will
people come forward.
Because of man’s nature
most, excepting those with
special grace, need a prodding
and a fear of the Lord
o therwise their human
frailities and weaknesses will
govern. History tells us this.
The prodding,
accompanied by preaching
and encouraging the
reception of grace through
the sacrament sacrifice,
penance and good works, will
hopefully produce those
needed to go into the
vineyard. The requirements
of the Lord toward our
fellow man can only be met
when we have obtained the
grace to do so. We should
hear more on obtaining grace
from the clergy. This doesn’t
seem to be emphasized today.
As stated, God is both
merciful and just. We are
experiencing His mercy now.
When we will receive his
justice we do not know. This
should be belabored by our
bishops and priests. We have
developed delusions of
grandeur and dwell on
ourselves. From dust we came
and to dust we shall return.
We will have our own special
judgement, on what we did
and what we failed to do.
We are told through
Christ’s Holy Church and
through scripture what we
must do and what we must
not do, what type of person
will receive an eternal reward
and what type of person will
receive an eternal
punishment. We will get one
or the other and should not
be duped by those who
would have you believe that
there is not going to be an
eternal punishment. Christ
■ tells us of the wheat and the
weeds and how the good will
be separated from those who
did not do His will.
Let’s hear more about
God’s grace and how we
obtain it. Let’s hear more
“fire and brimstone” and
develop a fear of the Lord for
it is the beginning of wisdom.
I believe it will lead many to
obtain the graces to develop
the love to do His will.
