ROME (NC) - Italy, in which boys traditionally enter
seminaries at 11 or 12 years of age, is now turning its attention
to the possibility of promoting vocations among the more
mature adults.
Auxiliary Bishop Fausto Vallainc of Siena is playing a leading
role in this move. He is administering the diocese of Colie di Val
d’Elsa for Archbishop Ismaele Mario Castellano of Siena who is
apostolic administrator of the diocese, and in that capacity he
has begun a push for adult vocations at the diocese’s Sacred
Heart Seminary.
Bishop Vallainc pointed out that among those who knocked
at the doors of a seminary for adult vocations “there are,
indeed, those who had not desired a vocation, or who had not
realized the call or even those who had not been able to answer
the Lord’s call before - just as there are those who did not
understand the signs of an invitation which came from above.”
Bishop Vallainc stated that he made no claim to having
discovered something extraordinary, but he merely wanted to
make known that Sacred Heart Seminary in the Colie di Val
d’Elsa diocese wished to offer its services to any other diocese.
Pastoral approaches on vocations should be geared to the man
of today, said Bishop Vallainc who, prior to his elevation to the
episcopate four years ago, was chief press officer at the
Vatican’s press center and had served as press spokesman of the
Second Vatican council.
Bishop Vallainc pointed to the Seminary of Colle di Val
d’Elsa as an example of what can be done in Italy toward
meeting the overall problem of the death of vocations.
“Since it opened in 1968, this Sacred Heart Seminary seeks
to welcome the young and the less young who seek it out from
every part of Italy,” he said.
Referring to a recent congress of Italian bishops on vocations,
Bishop Vallainc said that more attention should be paid “to
those persons of mature age so as to know how to benefit from
their rich experience. Even in our day the call of the Lord may
be given to adults of any age and profession . . .
“We are perfectly aware that not all those who believe they
have a vocation, even though they are no longer young, really
have the qualities to face up to the long novitiate of the
seminary or, even less, the Calvary of the priest.
“But, added the bishop, a seminary is open, and I wish to say
above all a seminary for adult vocations, not just to give official
approval to secured vocations but also to provide a climate for
reflection, erecting a bridge back for those who are unable to
find themselves or opening a new road for those who,
voluntarily or not, have lagged behind others of their own age.”

St. Vincent de Paul...
Dear Editor:
Your generous article in
last week’s GEORGIA
BULLETIN has
unfortunately been
misunderstood by some of
your readers.
Yes, we have recently
received more donations of
usable clothing, furniture,
and appliances, but we still
have need of more donations
of children’s clothing (socks,
underwear, tops, pants, and
dresses), sheets, blankets, and
towels - good usable items.
It’s back to school time now.
We have enough basic things
to open a new store, and we
are looking for a location that
will enable us to expand our
service to the poor.
Call us at 523-1541 for
pick-up of donations or to
volunteer their services for
our warehouse or store
activities.

“We do no work egotistically only for ourselves but for
whatever diocese may believe that it can make use of us,” stated
the bishop.
New Resource Guide
Aids Religious Ed
A guide to materials needed in adult and high school
religious education courses has been published by the
National Catholic Reporter Publishing Company.
Titled “The Resource Guide for Adult Religious
Education,” the 200-page large-format book was
compiled by Mary Reed Newland, an authority in the
field of religious education.
“The Resource Guide,”
according to the publisher, is
a “unique, single-source
reference” to media used in
adult and high school
religious education, including
books and articles, pamphlets
and other literature, films and
filmstrips, cassettes and
slides, network radio and
television programs, etc.
The book separates these
media into 38 curriculum
categories ranging from
theology and morality to
specific concerns like the
elderly and sacramental
preparation of youth.
In the research and writing
stages for close to three years,
the book is designed to offer
both basic programs and
supportive media to enrich
existing programs. Materials
are listed and evaluated, and
sources where they may be
obtained are given.
“ST. VINCENT’S NEEDS MORE CLOTHES,
especially children’s clothes for school.” This is the
plea of the workers at St. Vincent de Paul warehouse.
A group of the “faithful sorters” is pictured above (left
to right) - Eleanor O’Connor, Pastora Perez, Rosalie
Brown, Juanita Shott, and Eileen McKenna, but more
workers are needed. Tuesdays and Thursdays are
“sortin’ days.”
