National Leadership Meeting
Planned for Priests’ Group
CHICAGO (NC) - The National Federation of
Priests’ Councils (NFPC) has set a national leadership
meeting here in early 1975 for heads of priests’
councils.
The meeting, the first of its kind, will draw together
presidents of local priests’ councils to explore
possibilities for sharing ideas and to assist the priests
“in their responsibility as significant leaders,” the
NFPC said.
It said that more than 50
council presidents have
already indicated they will
attend the conference, which
has been tentatively
scheduled for February 4-6 at
the Cenacle Retreat House
here.
According to Father
Nicholas Rice, chairman of
the NFPC communications
committee, one purpose of
the meeting will be “to
review the present picture of
priests’ councils around the
country as to their
functioning, effectiveness,
procedures of representation
and issue orientation.”
Another goal will be
training in planning and
management skills needed for
effective leadership, Father
Rice said.
He added that meeting
together will give new council
presidents a chance to learn
from the experiences of other
councils, help councils to
share ideas with one another,
and help determine national
priorities for priests’ councils.
Father Reid C, Mayo,
NFPC president, noted that
“a man is elected president
and given all the
responsibilities . . . and then
is given very little training in
the nature of his job or
assistance in carrying it out
effectively.” The meeting will
bring together “a wealth of
experience” to help close that
gap, he said.

Public Service Demands High Integrity
WASHINGTON (NC) - “Public service demands the highest
integrity and is a heavy responsibility,” said Cardinal John Krol
of Philadelphia, president of the National Conference of
Catholic Bishops and United States Catholic Conference
(NCCB-USCC).
In a statement issued August 13 and titled “One Nation
Under God,” the leader of the American bishops urged a new
sense of honesty and integrity among America’s citizens and
elected officials, but above all a new sense of accountability to
God for one’s actions.
“The glare of public revelation in a free press is as nothing
compared to the light of truth in an all-knowing God,” he said.
“Our first president, George Washington, explicitly declared
that morality is impossible without religion,” he said. “The
pledge of allegiance to our flag affirms that we are in fact one
nation under God.”
The NCCB-USCC president praised the American system “in
which disclosures of improprieties can be made and appropriate
remedies can be taken.”
But he warned that that same system is one “in which
officials at all levels may be tempted to value political loyalty
over public benefit. Funds .. . may be spent very wastefully on
appointees who receive large incomes for minimal service or on
projects which serve too few people at too high a cost.”
The cardinal reminded Americans, “It has been said that, in a
democracy, the people often get the leadership they deserve.”
He called for a renewed interest and involvement in government
by all citizens and urged “a reawakening of moral sensitivity” at
all levels of American life.
But this awakening, if it is to succeed, he said, should begin
“with the profound conviction that we are indeed one nation
under God.”
“May we never grow weak by forgetting that source of our
unity and of our strength,” he said.

Benedictine Challenges Report
Tying Alcoholism to Catholics
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (NC) - Alcoholism “has a lot more to do with
biochemsistry than with Catholicism,” according to a priest who is involved with the
problem.
Benedictine Father Peter Sweisgood, assistant executive director of the Long
Island Council on Alcoholism here, said he disagrees with a recent report by a task
force of the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare which indicated that
Catholics are more likely to be alcoholics than Protestant or Jews.
The report, issued in Washinton, D.C., said that:
- There are relatively high
proportions of drinkers
among Roman Catholics:
- Liberal Protestants drink
like Catholics but they have
fewer heavy drinkers;

Charismatic Seminar
Has Prayer As Theme
BY JOLAINE KINGERY
Attendance at the First Atlanta Catholic
Charismatic Seminar marked it a success as over 150
persons, representing the 12 prayer groups in Metro
Atlanta, came for the conference at Immaculate Heart
of Mary School last Sunday, August 18.
Prayer was the theme of
the Seminar, and the
principle address was given by
Father George Maloney, S.J.,
professor from Fordham. A
scholar and author with
impressive credentials, Father
Maloney’s instruction
developed the idea that
prayer is not an action,
approaching God, as much as
a state of being where one
stops and lets God into his
life which then results in his
knowing, loving, and praising
God.
Following the principle
address, participants were
invited to select one of the
five Teaching Seminars to
attend. Father Tom Fidelis
from the Trappist Monastery
F.R. Reid

conducted a seminar on St.
John’s Gospel, “The Farewell
Discourse”; Father Anthony
Delisi, also from the Trappist
Monastery, gave an
instruction on “The Eucharist
and Charismatic Renewal”;
Father George Maloney
expanded on “Difficulties in
Prayer”; Dr. Lee Krauss
focussed on the importance
of “Spiritual Relationships,
How To Relate On a One To
One Basis” and Charles
Mueller held a seminar on
“Growth in Leadership” for
those who are leaders in the
various prayer groups.
The five-hour program also
included a period for song
and prayer, a refreshment
break, and then concluded
with celebration of the
Eucharist.
Mueller, leader of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary
prayer group, stated the main
purpose of the Seminars
(more will follow) is teaching
and also bringing together the
various prayer groups in the
Atlanta area to be a more
cohesive group which could
better respond to particular
needs of the Church in
Atlanta.
- Conservative Protestants
have the largest percentage of
abstainers and the lowest
proportion of heavy drinkers;
- Jews have the lowest
proportion of abstainers and
a very low proportion of
heavy drinkers.
The report also said that
the incidence of alcoholism is
lower among those who
attend church frequently
whatever their denomination.
Father Sweisgood said that
the experience of the Long
Island Council on Alcoholism
simply does not bear out
those findings.
“We have not found the
connection between
alcoholism and religion that
this report would imply,” he
said.
Father Sweisgood said that
there has been a study in
Europe of the amount of the
enzyme alcohol
dehydrogenase which occurs
in people of different ethnic
groups,
(The enzyme performs a
function whereby the body
can eventually convert
alcohol to carbon dioxide and
water. Generally, a higher
level of the enzyme means a
lower effect of alcohol.
“The people around the
Mediterranean have great
numbers of this enzyme,” he
said, but as the researchers
went north through Europe
into Scandinavia and the
British Isles, the amounts of
alcohol dehydrogenase grew
less and less.
“Alcoholism in Europe
follows exactly the same
geographic pattern,” he said.
“Of course, the biochemical
factor is only one factor in
alcoholism.”
He said that the Irish
“found a religious solution
(to alcoholism) in Ireland -
the Pioneer movement - but
the Pioneer never really took
in the United States. And you
have to look at the fact that
in Ireland, the Irish have a
very structured society, very
much centered around the
Church.
“It’s very possible that
being transplanted into this
pagan culture (in the United
States) created anxieties
among the Irish which
increased their tendency to
alcoholism.”
