Holds Regional Seminar Here
Fr. Joseph A. Sanches,
Director of the Society for
the Propagation of the Faith
for the Atlanta Archdiocese,
hosted a two-day regional
seminar, Feb. 4-5, for 17
directors of various
southeastern dioceses.
The Most Reverend
Edward T. O’Meara, National
Director of the society, in his
welcoming address, stated
that the Church’s Holy Year
efforts of renewal and
reconciliation must naturally
lead to a greater awareness
and spirit of sacrifice among
United States Catholics
toward the many desperate
needs of God’s suffering poor
in the missions.

stated, “may we, be renewed

Spirit compels us to proclaim
with joy the Good News of
Jesus Christ to all people,
especially the poor, the
oppressed, the unwanted and
in short, the ‘least of our

family of man.
“Through our efforts,” the
Bishop continued, “may the
people - the Church of our

their personal, often difficult
sacrifices -- they are helping
to alleviate and reconcile the
injustice and oppressive
inhuman conditions of
poverty which millions of
God’s poor endure daily.
“But even more,” Bishop
O’Meara stressed, “they are

offer.”
The unique role of the
Society for the Propagation
of the Faith in supporting the
most needy Churches in the
Missions was reviewed in light
of today’s world conditions
and the economic and moral
crises Americans are faced
with today.
“No other organization in
the Catholic Church does
what we do,” stated Bishop
O’Meara, “to support and
insure the presence and
life-giving service of the
Church in the Poor World.
“The Society is not geared
primarily to money,” Bishop
O’Meara said, “money is very
important: it’s the best thing
for buying food, clothes and
medicine, but the real
function of the Society is to
lead the People of God to a
heightened and authentically
Catholic and Christ-centered
missionary attitude and spirit.
“The ‘genius’ of the
Propagation of the Faith
Society, as it is structured,”
said Bishop O’Meara in
conclusion, “is that it does
away with selectivity in
giving . . .it embraces all the
missionary work of the
Church and tries to do its
best to universalize fairly the
charity of the giver.”
Fr. Vincent J. Nugent, CM,
Missiologist of the National
Office, delivered a report on
his activities as one of the
Theological Consultants to
the American Bishops’
Delegation attending the
recent Synod in Rome.

world-wide in October each

Membership and Deferred
Giving Programs, and a more
effective use of the media
were highlighted in small
group workshops.

Vincent A. Mulvin, Vice
Officialis of the Metropolitan
Tribunal. Archbishop
Donnellan also attended the
meeting.

Let Lenten Self-Denial
Work to Help the Poor
VATICAN CITY (NC) -
Pope Paul has opened Lent
with a plea to put lenten
self-denial to work for the
poor.
“If each one lets his
brothers and sisters come into
his own life, if he shares with
them of his substance rather
than of his surplus, then he
overcomes many obstacles to
reconciliation and attains
renewal,” the Pope said in a
Feb. 11 Lenten address to the
Universal Church.
Of Christ’s words, “The
poor you always have with
you,” the Pope commented:
“It almost sounds as
though the efforts of
Christian charity and human
justice were destined to be
always defeated. And would
not an overall view of our
times seem to confirm this?
Even though we appear to
have all the means of fighting
poverty, we still hear of wars,
famines and disasters.
“But for the Christian the
fact that such situations
continually recur does not
mean they are inevitable. The
Christian rather understands
the words of Jesus in the
sense that none of His
followers can ignore the fact
that Jesus identified Himself
with the poor.”
The Pope’s address, in its
entirety, said:
Dear sons and daughters,
“The poor you always have
with you” (Jn 12:8). These
words of Christ to the
Apostles are full of meaning.
It almost sounds as though
the efforts of Christian
charity and human justice
were destined to be always
defeated. And would not an
overall view of our times
seem to confirm this? Even
though we appear to have all

the means of fighting
poverty, we still hear of wars,
famines and disasters. But for
the Christian the fact that
such situations continually
recur does not mean that
they are inevitable. The
Christian rather understands
the words of Jesus in the
sense that none of His
followers can ignore the fact
that Jesus identified Himself
with the poor. Until the end
of time, the poor are “with”
Jesus. They are His partners,
His companions, His brothers
and sisters. The Christian,
precisely because he is a
Christian, must take his place
beside the destitute. He must
give of himself to assist them
in their immediate needs. He
must commit himself to
helping, in many different
ways, to build a better world
- a more just world.
Lent is an appropriate time
for this exercise of self-denial,
because it reminds Christians
who they are. It puts them on
their guard against the
satisfaction of a comfortable
existence and against the
temptations of living in
abundance. In this Holy Year,
which is dedicated to
reconciliation, each individual
is challenged by what
reconciliation implies: giving
and sharing within the human
family. If each one lets his
brothers and sisters come into
his own life, if he shares with
them of his substance rather
than of his surplus, then he
overcomes many obstacles to
reconciliation and attains
renewal through real
detachment.
This Year of Jubilee
requires of us a witness of
complete solidarity with
those with whom Jesus
particularly identified
Himself. It will be one of the
most significant proofs that
we can give to our brothers
and sisters that this year is
“holy” for all mankind.
Yes, this is what we ask of
you today at the beginning of
Lent - a genuine solidarity, a
practical solidarity with
Christ’s poor - and we ask it
of you in the name of Jesus.
And with deep affection for
all of you, our sons and
daughters throughout the
world, we bless you all: in the
name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy
Spirit. Amen.

‘Never Alone 9 Theme for Search
As a lasting work of art,
the twenty-two Searchers
who attended the twelfth
“Search for Christian
Maturity” weekend at
Ignatius House, Feb. 7 - 9,
completed their banner with
the theme “Never Alone.”
With the support of 26 youth
team members directed by
Jeannie Burke and Frank
Murphy, the new members
found they were not alone in
their search for meaning in
life and in their search for
God.
Fr. Joe McLaughlin, SM,
teacher at Marist High School
was spiritual director assisted
by Fr. Terry’ Young and Fr.
Mike Redden. Joe DeCastra
and Phyllis Alder were the
adult directors.
The following youth
attended Search No. 12: Paul
McMahon, Rick Collard,
Bernard Ross, Michael
Franck, Tom Sikorski, Mark
Bracken from Our Lady of
the Assumption; Donna
Skousen, Dan Anderson from
Holy Cross; Carolyn Wayne,
Pat Barnett from St. Thomas
the Apostle; Peggy Hall,
Donna Campbell from St.
Thomas Aquinas; Michael
Hogan, Jorge Guigon from SS.
Peter and Paul; Jackie Gasper
from Ft. McPherson; Kim
Galloway from St. Jude’s and
Eric Hachmeister from St.
John’s, Thomaston; Susan
Davis from Our Saviour
Lutheran; Jed DeLong, Doug
Hintz from Cross and Crown
Lutheran; Barbara Spurlock
from Northwest Presbyterian
and Sam Corriber from
Hillside Presbyterian.
“I’m at home with my
brothers and sisters,” said a
boy from St. Thomas the
Apostle. Another high school
youth recalled his effort to
live a Christian life but told
how much he was looking for
some people with whom to
share. The spirit of
togetherness prevaded the
activities which uniquely
included a Marist youth’s
presentation of magic and
others who shared jokes,
impersonations and musical
talents.
The Super Extension
Sunday, February 16 will be
held at Marist High School
beginning with a 2 p.m.
Liturgy followed by a
covered-dish dinner and

The Searchers and their
families will come together in
celebration of the third
anniversary of Search of
Atlanta and in appreciation
of all those youth and adults
who have supported and
contributed to its growth “in
Christ.”
