Alliance Theater Company’s second production of the season, “When You Cornin’
Back, Red Ryder?” by Mark Medoff, is a contemporary drama set in a small diner in
southern New Mexico. The hero, “Stephen,” is a greasy-haired scrawny kid who
works the graveyard shift slinging steak and eggs. He is an unstylist, self-conscious
relic of the fifties with a tattoo on his arm boasting, “born dead.”
Enter more characters bringing with them their own variations of deception. The
anti-hero, “Teddy,” is a young Vietnam War veteran turned hippie who strikes each
inhabitant of the diner with the cruelty of truth, providing a cleansing agent for
self-deception.
With a remarkable gift for
dialogue and dramatic
confrontation, the playwright
deftly strips each character of
his usual defenses, leaving
them and the audience only
bare and frightening truths.
“Red Ryder,” winner of
last season’s Obie and Outer
Critic awards during its
off-Broadway run, is starkly
realistic, in a way that few
contemporary American
plays have dared to tackle.
Theater-goers may not find
the characters in Lyle’s
r~— ! —
motel-diner likeable, but they
will surely recognize them.
The work evokes all
emotions-it is a sad play, yet
one will chuckle; it is a
violent play, yet has
overtones of great tenderness;
it is sexual, contains harsh
language, and at the same
time conveys some warm and
empathetic comments on the
American society of the late
sixties.
“Red Ryder” may shock
audiences, but it will never
LA BUENA NUEVA
bore them.
Michael Oakes, who
appeared in Alliance’s opener,
“The Boy Friend,” portrays
Stephen Ryder. Teddy is
played by Christopher Curry,
who appeared in the
off-Broadway production as
Stephen.
Cheryl, Teddy’s hippie
girlfriend, is played by Mamie
Andrews. Susan Mullin is
Angel, the pathetic obese
counter-waitress. Other

La Virgen Maria: Conclusion

La Asuncion
Significado
del Dogma
de la Asuncion
POR DULCE GARCIA
El Dogma de la Asuncion
afirma como verdad revelada
que Maria habiendo
completado el curso de su
vida terrenal, fue elevada a la
gloria celestial en cuerpo y
alma.
Es nuestra creencia que el
cuerpo de Jesus, despues de
estar tres dias en el sepulcro
se reunio con su alma y esta
ahora en los cielos inmortal y
glorioso.
Similarmente a esta
creencia es que los cuerpos de
los que mueren se separan de
sus almas. Solo el alma ahora
es admitida en el cielo, pero
su cuerpo y alma no seran
unidos y glorificados hasta
despues del Juicio Final.
Por la Doctrina de la
Asuncion nosotros
sostenemos que la
glorificacion de la carne, que
solo tomara lugar para
nosotros al final de los
tiempos, fue dada a Maria al
final de su vida terrenal, al
igual que fue dada a Jesus;
pero con una excepcion, que
Jesus se levanto de su tumba
y ascendio a los cielos por su
propio poder; Maria, sin
embargo, por el poder de su
Hijo. De acuerdo a eso se
usan dos palabras diferentes:
ascension y asuncion. Esta
doctrina no es una creencia
fantastica fundada en
leyendas, sino mas bien una
clara definicion de todos
aqueltos que admiten la
Resurreccion de nuestro
Senor y nuestra futura
resurreccion.
Maria, Nuestra Antorcha
de Esperanza.
Si existe alguna persona de
la que la familia humana
pueda sentirse orguliosa es es
de Maria. Ella es lo mejor de
nuestra raza; enteramente
humana, para que no nos
intimide el fulgor de lo
divino, como pudiera ocurrir
en el caso de Jesus. Ella es la
humilde esclava en quien el
Senor hizo maravillas (Lucas
1: 48-49) capaz de dar
acogida a los deseos mas
hondos de la Humanidad
peregrinante.
Tambien ella peregrino y
murio, fue una muerte dulce,
que la Iglesia primitiva
conmemoraba con la fiesta de
la “Dormicion” de la Virgen.
Pero su cuerpo no sufrio
corrupcion del sepulcro,
reapareciendo aqui su
caracter de criatura
privilegiada. La semejanza
con su Hijo debia de llegar
hasta el final. Tras la muerte
vino la resurreccion, y Marla
fue llevada en cuerpo y alma
a los cielos. La Asuncion de
Maria no su muerte es dogma
de fe, definido por el Papa
Pio XII El 10, de Diciembre de
1950 con ocasion del Ano
Santo. En la Asuncion hemos
de ver la victoria defmitiva de
esta mujer singular sobre la
antigua serpiente y sobre
todas las fuerzas del mal.
A la Asuncion siguio la
glorificacion de Maria al lado
de Jesus de modo semejante a
como su Hijo habia sido
glorificado a la diestra del
Padre. Maria fue coronada
como Reina y Senora del
Universo: reina de los angeles,
de los h ombres y de toda la
creacion. Este titulo que le
corresponds como madre de
Jesus y en atencion a sus
propios merecimientos.
De esta manera, la victoria
de Maria se convierte en
simbolo de esperanza para
toda la Humanidad, de modo
especial para el Pueblo de
Dios, pues en ella se han
cumplido ya las promesas
hechas por Cristo a su Iglesia.
Dice el Concilio a este
proposito:
Jesus, de la misma manera
que ya glorificada en los
cielos en cuerpo y alma, es la
imagen y principio de la
Iglesia que ha de ser
consumada en el futuro siglo,
asi en la tierra, hasta que
llegue el dia del Senor,
antecede con su luz al pueblo
de Dios peregrinante, como
signo de esperanaza segura y
consuelo.
Sabemos que Maria ha
recorrido nuestra misma ruta,
viviendo ejemplarmente su fe,
su esperanza y su caridad, y
ha llegado ya al termino de su
peregrinacion. Sabemos que
ese es tambien nuestro
camino y tenemos la
esperanza de llegar a
conseguir la bienaventuranza
que ella ya ha conquistado.
Ella es como una antorcha
que nos senala donde esta
nuestro destino de hijos de
Dios, si somos fieles a nuestra
vocacion de elegidos.
Seguiremos a Cristo en esta
vida y reinaremos con El,
tambien con Maria, en la
gloria del Padre.
