Metro Community Meeting
Church and civic groups, as well as citizens
of the Greater Atlanta area, are invited to
attend a Metro Community Meeting on
Wednesday, December 8, from 8 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. at the Druid Hills Presbyterian Church,
1026 Ponce de Leon Avenue. The theme of
the meeting will be “Toward a Declaration of
Interdependence.”
The purpose of the meeting will be to
determine-where possible-the extent to
which participants representing citizens
throughout the metro community
acknowledge mutual concerns and a
willingness to call to join action for the
benefit of all.
Those attending will raise the issues. It is an
open-ended agreement to exchange feelings of
hope and concern in a workshop framework
of structured opportunity.
Whatever consensus is found will be used in
writing a “Declaration of Interdependence”
which will be distributed as a statement of
desired goals to community leaders for
ratification and action.
Registration for the meeting begins at 8
p.m. Dean David Collins, President of the
Christian Council of Metro Atlanta, will
welcome those attending at 8:30.
A registration form is below:

DALLAS (NC) - The man
who has become known as
the “prison bishop” has urged
public officials to reject a
“hanging judge mentality.”
Bishop Joseph A. Durick,
who now serves in the prison
chaplaincy service, said public
officials should continue to
reject the death penalty as a
weapon against crime in our
society. He said it should be
rejected even when the
request comes from the
convict himself, as in the case
of Gary Mark Gilmore of
Utah.
Bishop Durick is now a
chaplain at the Federal
Correctional Institution in
Segoville, Tex., near here. In
issuing a statement on the
death penalty from his home,

he emphasized that he was
speaking as a private citizen,
not as a spokesman for the
Federal Bureau of Prisons.
“I am deeply saddened
when I see what appears to be
a hanging judge mentality
growing in our country,”
Bishop Durick said. “I am
saddened when I hear of men
like Gary Mark Gilmore
asking to be executed, but I
am more saddened when I
read that the warden of the
Utah State Prison has
received numerous requests
from individuals who wish to
volunteer as members of the
firing squad.
“Have we come no further
than this in our quest for a
more humane and
compassionate society? Have
we learned so few lessons
from all the centuries when
the state was used to strike
out in vengeance and deal out
death to those who have
failed and upon whom we
have turned in fear? Capital
punishment is wrong and
should be abolished, and the
fact that the request comes
from the convict himself does
not change the matter.”

How much did the Playboy interview influence the final election results?
Jimmy Carter thinks it was a big factor. Just before the election, he was
quoted by the New York Times in a front-page story in the words shown
above.

the nation last year when he
was granted a request to
resign as bishop of Nashville,
Tenn., (a diocese covering
all but the western third of
the state) and devote full
time to prison ministry.
During the time he served
as head of the Nashville
diocese he became known as
a champion of various causes
related to civil rights and
social justice.
“Back in 1764,” Bishop
Durick said, “a wise and
compassionate Christian
lawyer in Italy, Cesare
Bonesana Beccaria, made the
first great plea for an end to
capital punishment. Among
other things he pointed out
that ferocity of punishment
breeds ferocity of character,
even in the non-criminal
public. This is as true today
as it was in Beccaria’s
day ...”
Several years ago, Bishop
Durick issued a pastoral letter
on prison reform which called
for sweeping changes in the
nation’s prisons, including the
elimination of capital
punishment, small regional
prisons where inmates could
be near their families, and
conjugal visits for married
prisoners.
Since leaving his
administrative post he has
served as a chaplain in federal
prisons in Fort Worth, Tex.;
Pleasonton, Calif., and
Lexington, Ky.

Dia De Dar Gracis
sale adelante, muchas veces mejorando materialmente y a veces
profundizando en nuestras verdades cristianas. Gracias, Senor.
crecimiento espiritual mio propio.
- GRACIAS
PADRE.
