Search Extension Groups Raise Money
The Extension Groups of
the Search community have
recently engaged themselves
in a fund raising contest to
secure additional monies for
the work of the youth retreat
program in the archdiocese.
They have succeeded in
raising approximately $500
to be used for the continuing
development of the Search
community and for the
program’s outreach in service.
Funds raised will be used
to purchase needed materials
such as song books, spiritual
books and materials for the
continued development of
spiritual leadership for
Search. In addition, the

Search community will be
enabled to make a corporate
response to the needy of the
area, both by way of service
and also by monetary
response.
A good example of this is
in the contest itself. The
award offered to the winning
extension group was a dinner
to be prepared and served for
them. However, members of
the Alpharetta extension
chose not to accept this
award, but rather requested
that the cost of the meal be
given to a needy family who
might not otherwise enjoy a
holiday meal. Special
congratulations and thanks to
all who participated in this
effort, especially to the
winning extension, hosted by
Ray and Phyllis Martin.

Los libros de Job y
Eclesiastes, del Viejo
Testamento, son obras
maestras de espiritualidad,
tan llenas de sentido para
nosotros hoy, como lo fueron
para el pueblo Hebreo
despues de la caida de
Jerusalem
corazon.
Todos conocemos la
historia de Job (1:1): un
hombre integro y recto,
temeroso de Dios y apartado
del mal, sufrio enormemente,
perdiendo familia y
posegiones, e incluso la salud.
Tres de sus amigos trataron
de eonsolarlo. Sin embargo,
ellos le reprocharon su
amargura, pues ellos estaban
seguros de que esos males
eran merecidos y debidos a
maldades suyas.
En eso procedian como
mas tarde harian los
discipulos de Jesus (Juan
9:1), asumiendo que el ciego
de nacimiento lo era por
algun pecado cometido, ya
por el o por sus padres. Con
lo que son muy parecidos a
nosotros que, cuando vemos a
los que padecen pobreza y
miseria, suponemos se la
merecen por haberse
comportado mal.
Job, inocente de pecado
como era, comenzo a
murmurar contra Dios por los
p a d e c i m ient os que
experimentaba. Y en esto, no
era el igual que nosotros?
Cierto que el sufrimiento de
los inocentes es un terrible
problema, y si, un misterio. Y
el libro de Job no nos da una
respuesta cierta. Pero nos
ensena algo invaluable.
Pues Job, a pesar de sus
murmuraciones y sus que jas,
conservo su fe en Dios. Desde
las profundidades de su
espiritu atormentado, clama
(Job 19:26-26): “Yo se que
mi Redentor vive . . . desde
mi carne yo vere a Dios . . .”
En el fuego de su propio
sufrimiento da testimonio de
la unidad del Dios justo y
amoroso con el Dios que
permite que se sufra. Pero
solo para que de nuestros
sufrimientos pueda El extraer
mayores bondades.
Nosotros no sabemos
realmente el por que Dios
permite que el inocente sufra.
Pero desde el ventajoso punto

de vista del Nuevo
Testamento, nosotros
sabemos que Dios mismo hizo
del sufrimiento un medio
para una mayor union con El.
Pues Dios se hizo, se un Unica
Palabra engendrada, uno de
nosotros. En Jesus, se
identifica plenamente con
nosotros, padeciendo en su
propia Personal nuestras
agonias y sufrimientos,
aceptando tan completa-
mente nuestra humanidad
que, aceptando nosotros
nuestra humanidad como
hizo El, podamos compartir
Su divinidad.
Nosotros no somos ni
masoquistas ni fatal istas. Pero
hay veces, en nuestras vidas,
que tenemos que sufrir, y
sufrir terriblemente. Durante
esos momentos, como Job,
nos sentiremos abriumados,
hasta injustamente tratados.
Pero el Dios de amor, el Dios
que desea ser nuestro amigo,
y que nos ama tanto que
escogio ser uno con nosotros
en nuestros sufrimientos, nos
dara la fuerza que
necesitamos para soportar las
heridas, y en soportandolas
(Juan 9:3), para que se
manifiestan Sus obras.
Del Eclesiastes aprendemos
(1:2) que nuestras ambiciones
son vanidad de vanidades; un
correr tras el viento. Este
sagaz judio todo los examina:
placeres, riquezas; incluso la
misma sabiduria. Y las
encuentra vacias. Y concluye
que ninguna de las cosas
humanas dura; que vivimos en
medio de incertidumbres; y
que los goces que hoy
e x p e r ime n t am os se
desvanecen al siguiente dia. Y
que solo de una cosa en esta
vida podemos estar ciertos, y
que esta es que tenemos que
morir.
El ac-erbo criticismo de
todas las cosas humanas que
rezuma todo el libro del
Eclesiastes, no excluye su
propia sabiduria. E hizo que,
cientos de arios mas tarde
Santo Tomas de Aquino, esa
lumbrera del cristianismo,
dijera, poco antes de morir,
que todas sus obras eran paja
seca.
Sin embargo, el Eclesiastes
no es ni nihilista, ni pesimista
ni fatalista. Nos indica, casi
manda, que aceptemos de
Dios todas las cosas buenas
que la vida ofrece, pero
reconociendolas como lo que
ellas son: bienes transitorios
que desapareceran . . . Y mas
aun, nos urge que hagamos
principalmente una cosa. Y
es: que temamos a Dios y
cumplamos sus mandamine-
tos; por que eso esel hombre
todo (12:13).
No es esto lo mismo que el
propio Jesus pide de
nosotros? Nosotros debemos,
antes que nada, buscar
primero el Reino de Dios,
pues buscandolo, nos
encontraremos a nosotros
mismos.
La vida cristiana no es una
de tinieblas y tristezas. Por el
contrario, es un responder
gozoso a la nueva maravillosa
de que Dios nos ama, y que
debemos establecer su reino
de amor en este mundo
terreno. Esto podemos, y
lograremos, si como Job,
conservamos la fe en El, y
como Eclesiastes, ponemos
las primeras cosas, primero, y
buscamos nuestro bien, no en
las cosas buenas pero
transitorias de este mundo,
sino en el Dios de amor, a
quien debemos imitar en
nuestras vidas.
Court ‘Errors’ Hit-
(Continued from page 1)
dilation and evacuation (D
and E) was found to be safer
for the woman than either
saline or prostaglandin
abortions.
D and E abortions are
performed using surgical
instruments, and the dead
child is removed through the
vagina. Saline abortions
involve the injection of a salt
solution into the amniotic sac
which surrounds the unborn
child, who is later born dead
(although some fetuses
survive the procedure).
Prostaglandin abortions are
similar to saline abortions
except that the substance
introduced causes uterine
contractions, expelling the
baby, but with an increased
chance that it will survive.
Prior to the study’s
completion, it had been
thought that prostaglandins
were safest for the mother,
followed by saline abortions,
with D and E being the most
dangerous method for the
woman.
But “the findings on D and
E versus saline is a major
turnaround from previous
thought,” according to Dr.
Grimes.
Major complications,
including death, convulsions,
hemorrhage and pneumonia,
developed in 2.9 percent of
prostalgandin abortions and
1.81 percent of saline
abortions. In a separate
comparison, complications
developed in 1.78 percent of
saline abortions and .69
percent for D and E.
According to Msgr.
McHugh, the study’s findings
“would certainly have been
available to the (Supreme)
Court if it made even the
simplest investigation.” But
the court, “apparently
without any investigation or
consultation, struck down a
Missouri law restricting saline
abortion,” he said. “The CDC
study,” Msgr. McHugh
continued, “now shows that
despite its common usage,
(saline abortion) is . . .
unsafe.”
The court’s “opinions on
abortion procedures are now
contradicted by new
scientific information,” but
its fundamental error remains
“its refusal to see the
abortion decision as anything
more than a matter of a
woman’s privacy, thus
ignoring the basic fact that
abortion destroys the life of a
developing unborn child,”
according to Msgr. McHugh,
who called on Congress to
amend the Constitution to
reverse the Supreme Court
abortion verdicts.
