Creating Community
By Dr. Ellen L. Burns
As I was scurrying around a shopping center the other day
and then waiting in long lines to purchase my selections, I kept
affirming all those things we said last week about the advantages
of simple living. Let’s imagine how our lives would be different
if we set out on such a deliberate course of simple life style.
First off, we’d try to rid ourselves of extra material things -
most of us would fare better with less and more nutritious food;
many of us have clothes closets that are bulging; our homes are
luxurious and ornate; our cars are not efficiently built or run;
our entertainment very expensive. To trim down excesses on
any of these areas would be healthful and satisfying to
ourselves, and somewhat beneficial to others. But to what
purpose? If we earn enough to buy these pleasures, why can’t
we enjoy them?
Psychologists tell us that when we have all physical needs met
- food, clothing, safety, we take them for granted and any
amount of excess is not really very enjoyable, and not truly
satisfying. Certainly some persons seem to need to show off
material advantages as a boost to their self-esteem or
self-importance. But heaps of material things do not add up to a
beautiful and caring person. If I could give my family a very
expensive gift this Christmas, and did in fact do so, it would not
be appreciated if I neglected them as persons the rest of the
year.
In a larger scale I feel this applies to all of us at this time of
year when we reach out to the neglected children, the poor, and
the aging. Once a year, I propose, is better than not at all, but
the gift of self is a much deeper sort of experience. Most giving of
self does not demand more expense, but a bit more time and a
little inconvenience. An example may clarify my point. There is
an elderly lady living close by my apartment who needs a ride to
church each Sunday. My consideration of her needs would not
cost me a cent: I might have to leave for church ten minutes
earlier and arrive home later. So to practice what I’ve been
trying to say to you, I’m going to give her the promise of a ride
to church each week for a Christmas present. And now that I’ve
put it in writing, I feel even more committed to keep my word.
The Christian life is really a simple one. Faith, hope, and love
are simple virtues, however deep and spiritual. When our lives
are not too cluttered with material glitter, we create space for
people. This is what the social Gospel is all about.

statement represents his feelings about this program. "First, the
program really works and I sincerely recommend it to anybody.
The program was easy to follow and I experienced NO hunger! I
am a businessman who travels and entertains and I found no con
flict whatsoever with the program. Secondly, past weight pro
grams caused me to be depressed because of their tedious regi
mentation in counting calories, weighingNood products and
extremely slow progress. Throughout this program I have felt fan
tastic mentally and elated because I don't have to count calories
or carbohydrates. In addition to the weight loss program, the
behavior, modification program has proven tq be very effective.
1 have lost my desire for junk foods. The individual attention and
the warmth of the staff is appreciated." IAs told by David Woolf-

Insult By Carter Aide Called ‘A Mistake’
WASHINGTON (NC) -
Bishop James Rausch, general
secretary of the U.S. Catholic
Conference, has said
comments made by a top aide
to President-elect Jimmy
Carter “can be construed as
insulting to millions of
Catholics.”
The Carter aide, Greg
Schneiders, 29, told NC News
Service his comments were
“poorly stated,” a “mistake”
and “ill-chosen.” He said he
would contact Bishop Rausch
to put his comments in
context.
Schneiders was raised a
Catholic but says he is no
longer a practicing Catholic.
He joined Carter’s campaign
as a baggage-handler last
January and became his
administrative assistant and
one of his closest advisors. He
is reportedly in line to be
named White House
appointments secretary.
Schneiders was the only
aide with Carter when he met
with a committee of six
bishops, including Bishop
Rausch, in late August, but
Schneiders says he has never
served as Carter’s “Catholic
advisor” despite jokes to that
effect.
Schneiders was quoted in a
WASHINGTON POST
interview with reporter Sally
Quinn, published Nov. 19, as
saying he and Carter have
“talked a lot about
Catholicism. I’ve said what a
farce it was ... I think the
Catholic Church does a better
job of screwing people up
than any other institution.
I’m sure there are segments of
my Catholic upbringing that
may affect me in some
damaging ways.”
Bishop Rausch was out of
the country when the
Schneiders interview
appeared, but he issued a
three-paragraph comment on
his return.
‘‘The comments
concerning the Catholic
Church attributed to Mr.
Schneiders by the
WASHINGTON POST can be
construed as insulting to
millions of Catholics,” Bishop
Rausch said.
disturbed that a close aid to
the President-elect should
apparently hold and express
such views.
“I trust that these remarks
merely reflect an isolated
error of judgment and taste
on the part of one
individual.”
Schneiders told NC his
words were “poorly stated,”
“a mistake” and “ill-chosen.”
“While I’m not now a
practicing Catholic, I do not
harbor any animosity or
negative feelings toward the
Catholic Church,” he said.
Schneiders said his
comments came after he had
responded to questions about
his father’s background as a
teacher in Jesuit schools and
his own Catholic education.
He said his critical remarks
were specifically directed at
his own early grammar school
experiences
schools.
in Catholic
“There was a great deal of
stress on the negative aspects
of religion and sin,” he said.
Schneiders said the interview
did not include his comments
that “I thought the Church
had opened up a great deal,
especially since Vatican II.”
Schneiders said that while
he had no direct experience
with Catholic grammar
schools today, he understood
from his three sisters - who
are nuns - that “it’s very
different today.”
Schneiders was quoted in
the POST interview as noting
that Carter “refers to me as
his ‘Catholic advisor’.”
But Schneiders told NC
that while Carter has joked
about this, he was never a
“Catholic advisor” in “a
general way or in a specific
way.”
