Following the superb dramatization of “How Green Was My Valley,”
“Masterpiece Theatre” is providing viewers with a neat holiday change of pace. It is
another Lord Peter Wimsey adventure, “Five Red Herrings,” to be broadcast in four
parts starting Sunday, Dec. 19 at 9-10 p.m. on PBS channels (Channels 8 and 30
locally).
Wimsey is Dorothy Sayers’ contribution to the classic detective tradition and has
always been a favorite of mystery addicts. Partly that is because of Lord Peter’s droll
wit, sophisticated manners, and eccentric use of language. But it is also because Miss
Sayers knows how to spin a good yarn, setting up an intricate mental puzzle in the
best whodunit fashion.
Viewers have a chance to
match wits with the master
detective in solving a case set
in the Scottish highlands were
Wimsey has gone for a
well-earned vacation from
crime. Instead, he discovers
the body of a dead man in a
ravine, a painter whose still
wet canvas seems to indicate
an accidental fall as cause of
death. By the end of the first
episode, however, Wimsey has

As a television performer,

in the performing arts. He
performed through high
school, singing and dancing.
A brief stint off-Broadway
followed, then six months
studying for the ministry and
then Vereen worked with
dance troupes, taught and
choreographed concerts.
Then, in 1966, Ben tried
out for “Sweet Charity.” It
was his first Broadway
musical and he landed a job
in the chorus. He also began
the friendship with Fosse that
led up to the much acclaimed
“Pippin.”
After “Sweet Charity”
came “Golden Boy” as an
understudy of Sammy Davis,
Jr.; “Hair”; and the role of
Judas in “Jesus Christ
Superstar.” He won raves
from the press, the Theatre
World Award for his
portrayal, and a nomination
for the prestigious Tony
Award. He turned down
reenacting the role in the film
version to go on to star in
“Pippin.” The rest is history.
Ben Vereen will perform
twice nightly except Sunday
at 9:00 and 11:00.
Entertainment charge for the
first show is $10 and $7 for
the second. Free self-parking

tube of paint proves that the
man was murdered. But to
find the culprit, Wimsey must
eliminate five of the six
suspects who had both
motive and opportunity.
One of the great pleasures
in watching Wimsey in action
is the way Ian Carmichael
embodies the role, playfully
blending upper-class reserve
with the unbridled
enthusiasm of the chase.
Mention should also be made
of the picturesque Galloway
Hills where the film was shot
and the lavish attention given
to recreating the fashions and
decor of the Thirties, the
period in which the action
takes place.
BEN VEREEN, the
brilliant actor-singer-dancer
with a host of awards to his
credit, offers his dynamic
nightclub act in the Venetian
Room of the Fairmont
Colony Square Hotel through
December 18.
The act, which includes
sets, ballet, drama, jazz and
magic brings Broadway into
the Venetian Room.
John J. O’Connor of THE
NEW YORK TIMES,
described Vereen thus: “He
sings, he dances, he acts, and
he literally simmers with
energy, providing the human
equivalent of what scientists
call a monopole, a center of
magnetic force.”
Ben Vereen won the
“Entertainer of the Year”
Award from the American
Guild of Variety Artists, as
well as their “Rising Star”
To be looked forward to is
his upcoming role in “Roots”
which will premiere the first
of 1977 on ABC.
Ben reached stardom on
Broadway in Bob Fosse’s
“Pippin,” for which he won
the Tony Award for “Best
Actor in a Musical” and the
“Drama Desk Award” in the
same category.
His first album, “Ben
Vereen Off-Stage,” was
released by Buddah Records
and a hit single resulted,
“Stop Your Half-Steppin’ Ma,
Ma.” Buddah will also record
his second album consisting
of ballads and love songs.

Vatican May Enter TV Business
VATICAN CITY (NC) - The Vatican may be going
into the worldwide television business in the
not-too-distant future, according to a prediction in the
Vatican weekly magazine Dec. 2.
Responding to a letter to the editor which asked why
the Vatican has a radio station but not a television
network, L’Osservatore Delia Domenica said that
currently functioning technology would not now permit
the Vatican to transmit widely without going to great
expense and seeking hard-to-get government permissions.
“But it will be a different story when a satellite
system is developed to permit transmitting directly to
every home,” the magazine said. “Then there will also be
a Vatican television.”
According to recent reports, the technology for an
economical satellite transmission system has already
been developed and its realization is only a matter of
time.
When that day does dawn, a Vatican television station
capable of “reaching all the territories of the globe” will
be ready, the magazine said.
