SEARCH THEME
‘We Are A Promise’
BY JOHN PURDY
Search of Atlanta now has had two weekend retreats so far
this school year, the latest drawing 21 young people who had
never experienced a Search weekend before.
Youth Directors Ann Hudson and Frank Murphy promoted
the theme “You Are A Promise” during the weekend, so it was
no surprise when the teens chose a close variation on that, “We
Are A Promise,” for their weekend’s theme. The youths who
participated on Search 21 make their homes in Augusta,
Savannah, Hephzibah, Fort Gordon, Warner Robins, and
Athens, as well as some closer-to-home places like Chamblee,
Doraville, Decatur, Tucker, East Point, Peachtree City, Roswell >
and even one person from Atlanta! o
Search has been expanding greatly in the last few weekend a.
retreats, with more people coming from the Diocese of
Savannah. This is in preparation for the beginning of a Search
program in Savannah. When Savannah Search has its first
weekend sometime in the first of the year, they will have a
number of young people in their own diocese who have already
had the experience of Search, and who will be able to act as
“team” for the weekend.
The youth on each Search weekend are as a group, somewhat
different from each other. The young people of Search 21 began
their weekend a little quiet and subdued, and then by Saturday
afternoon had almost completely reversed themselves and were
talking and singing and most got into some dancing on Saturday
night. The teens listened to some talks by other young people,
got involved in some discussion and group activities, and
experienced several prayer services and two liturgies. Father Jim
Kelly, of the Office of Religious Education was the spiritual
director for the weekend. Helping out at various times during
the weekend were Father Leo Herbert, Father Joe McLaughlin,
Father Pat Bishop and Father Herman Brinkmann from Chapel
Five at Fort Gordon, near Augusta, who concelebrated the
closing Mass with Father Kelly. As usual, Sister Jean Meier, the
Search Coordinator, was around to make sure everything ran
more or less smoothly. Sister Kathy Deverell also contributed to
the success of the weekend.
These are the new Searchers of Search 21: Kelly Hutnick of
Sacred Heart in Warner Robins; Thomas Peters of St. Jude’s;
Mike Vigil, Chuck Weiss, Vivian Antinazi, Karen Kratzer and
Sharon McGrane of Holy Cross; Robbie Willits and John Reich
of Sts. Peter and Pual; Laura Wittschens, Kevin Schwar and
George Foster of Chapel Five in Fort Gordon; Ralph Kerr, Mary
Wilson and Patti Totter of St. Joseph’s in Athens; Leslie Long,
from Blessed Sacrament in Atlanta; Richard Scarwid from
Blessed Sacrament in Savannah; Cheryl Love from Holy Trinity
in Peachtree City; Bob Krummel from Corpus Christi; Gene
Piccirilli from St. Thomas Aquinas and Ana Sveiras from
Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The Search program has been growing in popularity in the
last year so much that some people have had to be asked to wait
until the next weekend came up. For those, and any young
person 16 or older who would like to make a Search weekend,
the next retreat will be held January 21-23, 1977, at Ignatius
Retreat House on Riverside Drive. Applications are available
through the Office of Religious Education at 881-6131.
ANN HUDSON AND FRANK
MURPHY directed Search No. 21 with
the theme “We Are A Promise.” Father
Jim Kelly and Father Herman
Brinkmann, in the background,
concelebrated the closing Liturgy.
