You Can’t Dial A Prayer In Vatican
VATICAN CITY (NC) - It has no yellow
pages and you won’t find a listing for
Dial-A-Prayer.
But the just-published 1977 Vatican City
phone book does offer within its 151 pages of
listings a curious glimpse into life in the
world’s smallest state - including such
oddities as a number for the monument to
Pope St. Pius X.
The book begins with the usual rundown of
often-called numbers: 3437 will get a 24-hour
first aid assistance, 4444 will bring a Vatican
fire truck to your door and 3208 will connect
you with the Swiss Guard at any hour.
One number you will not find, however, is
the private line of Pope Paul VI. The papal
number is known only to those who must
have it - and even they still have to get past
the Pope’s vigilant secretary, Msgr. Pasquale
Macchi, before speaking directly with the
Pope.
Dozens of calls for the Pope are placed
daily by the troubled or the curious from
most parts of the world. A nun of the Pious
Disciples of the Divine Master - the religious
order which provides the Vatican phone
operators - will pass such calls on to an
appropriate official of the Vatican Secretariat
of State.
“We get a lot of calls from the States
between 8 and 10 a.m.,” said one secretariat
official who often speaks with Americans
wanting to talk with the Pope.
“The early morning hours here are the wee
hours there - the time when party-goers get
the lightheaded idea to call Queen Elizabeth,
President Ford or Pope Paul VI,” he added.
“I usually talk with them for a while and
then hang up to prevent them from getting a
huge telephone bill when they sober up.”
The official hastened to add, however, that
people with serious problems are listened to
seriously and directed to offices which might
be able to help them.
Presuming that a caller doesn’t want to
speak with the Pope, he stands a good chance
of speaking with almost any other Vatican
official. Those who don’t have the slim, pale
blue “Elenco Telefonico” at hand, can dial
6982, the Vatican central switchboard, to be
connected with any Vatican phone line.
Any four-digit Vatican number can be
reached directly from the city of Rome by
prefixing the Vatican exchange 698. A 1929
convention between Italy and the Vatican
legally regulates the free flow of calls between
the two sovereign states.
The Vatican directory contains several
surprises, such as a number for calling the
funeral monument of Pope Benedict XIV,
and another for the monument of Pope St.
Pius X, among the 18 lines installed in St.
Peter’s Basilica.
The reason is that inside these large
monuments two first aid stations have been
installed to meet emergency needs during
crowded papal ceremonies.
There are also phone connections to the
Basilica’s huge main altar and to the Altar of
the Chair, the baroque masterpiece of Bernini
in the apse of the great church.
• The home and Vatican numbers of 35
physicians who serve Vatican personnel are
listed in the telephone book, as is the number
of Dr. Mario Fontana, the Pope’s personal
physician.
By dialing 3068 a caller can reach Vatican
City’s judge Giuseppe Spinelli. Four Vatican
telephone workers, in fact, recently had the
occasion to use Judge Spinelli’s extension.
While doing repair work on the phone line
in the Pope’s private apartment several years
ago, the technicians robbed the pontiff of
several gold coins and other items. The
telephone workers got light jail sentences.

Leyenda De Los Pastores De Belen
POR ALFREDO LEDON
Esto que quiero compartir
hoy con ustedes es en cuento,
una leyehda (que encontre en
un libfo que estoy
leyendo) .'. . llena de amor y
desprendimiento y que nos
puede decir mucho en esta
epoca en que los sucesos de la
Navidad son buenos para que
los cristianos nos
prediquemos unos a otros esa
leccion tan hermosa que Jesus
nos enseno: OFRECER Y
PEDIR. (San Mateo 7:7)
Cada uno de nosotros en la
comunion directa con Dios
sabra lo que va a ofrecer . . .
un sacrificio algo que interese
a tus hermanos... a los
pobres . . . abandonar una
mala costumbre . . . practicar
una virtud . . . En fin, cada
cual vera y sabra que puede
ofrecer al Senor.
Por otra parte, a veces nos
parece egoista nuestra
constante actitude ante Dios
de pedir y volver a pedir. Pero
Nuestro Padre conoce bien
nuestras necesidades y no se
molesta por nuestras
constantes peticiones, como
no nos molesta que nuestros
hijos acudan confiados a
nosotros en cada momento de
apuro. Lo importante es que
nuestras oraciones lleven esa
carga de fe, de seguridad, de
certeza, de confianza . . .
igual a la que nos ensena el
protagonista de esta leyenda.
Y aqui va el cuento pastoril,
reducido en su extension,
debido al espacio de que
disponemos:
Levi es un muchacho
endeble y raquitico, huerfano
de padre y con su madre
enferma y ciega. Alos diez
anos empieza a trabajar de
aprendiz de pastor en los
rebanos de Belen. A los 12, el
jefe de los pastores le regala
un corderito, que Levi piensa
engordar y cuidar para
cuando sea grande cambiarlo
por dos ovejas y asi comenzar
su propio rebano para tener
dinero y cuidar de su madre
enferma.
Este corderito es su primer
tesoro y Levi ha venido
haciendo turnos de dia y de
noche, durmiendo al raso y
afanandose en aprender mas
su oficio para ver cumplidos
sus suenos y esperanzas,
mientras levanta sus ojos
tristes al cielo de Belen.
Acaba de pasar la medianoche
y el cielo esta sereno y
brillante. El pastor de tumo,
de un paseo por el rebano y
vela por que todo este en
orden. Levi que esta dormido,
siente de pronto que lo
sacuden por un brazo y la
gritan que se apure en

levantarse. Que pasa? Sera un
sueno? Donde me llevan?
Luces . . . Angeles ... El
Mesias . . . Levi no entiende
nada. Se frota los ojos y su
companero lo arrastra, pues
no quiere llegar tarde. A
donde? A ver al Mesias !
Se escucha el canto suave
del Coro de los Angeles y los
pastores corren al portal,
unos con queso, leche y pan;
otros con nueces y miel.
Todos corren a rendir
homenaje y con ellos, Levi,
que no comprende que
sucede. No puede
comprender, pues el apenas
sabe del Mesias, ya que casi
nunca tenia tiempo de acudir
el sabado a la leccion en la
sinagoga. Por que corremos
tanto? Habra fuego? Van
hacia la gruta de Absalon,
donde solamente hay un
establo viejo. El Mesias?
Quien sera el Mesias y que
tiene que hacer en esta gruta?
Por fin llegan. Desde un
rincon, Levi contempla el
homenaje de los pastores al
Nino Jesus. Junto al pesebre,
hay un hombre joven de pie,
y una muchacha sentada,
sostiene en sus brazos un
bebe precioso. El mayoral y
los demas pastores, entran, se
inclinan, hacen reverencias y
se postran ante la muchacha y
le alargan al hombre sus
regalos. Levi, de rodillas, lo
ha visto todo, lo ha mirado
todo, pero al fin sus ojos se
quedan clavados en el Nino
Dios. Tan pequenito, tan
bianco, tan bonito . . . Esta
tan absorto, que no se da
cuenta que ya los pastores
salieron y solamente queda el
en la gruta.
La muchacha le mira, le
sonrie bondadosa y pregunta:
Y tu, no tienes nada que
ofrecer? Levi se sobresalta.
No contesta, pero da una
sonrisa a la sonrisa de la
Senora. Se levanta, y sale
disparado como una flecha.
Corre Levi, pues tu tambien
tienes algo que ofrecer.
Apurate, no sea que se vaya el
Mesias. El no puede ofrecer
mas que una cosa, su unico
tesoro: el corderito en el cual
habia puesto todas sus
ilusiones, suenos y
esperanzas. Pero Levi no
piensa, y con el cordero en
brazos regresa corriendo a la
gruta: Toma, buena senora.
Te lo doy para el y para ti. Es
todo lo que tengo.
Tomalo. . . Ella coge el
cordero, lo besa y sonrie. Levi
muy contento de verla
sonreir, ya ni se acuerda que
no tiene cordero . . . que ya
no tiene nada.
Ella le pregunta: Y tu, que
quieres? . . . Dejame cargar el
nino, responde Levi. Bien,
pero ten cuidado no lo
despiertes. Me dejas besarlo?
pregunta Levi y la Senora
sonrie. El besa al pequenuelo.
Un beso largo, en la
frente . . . suave y cuidadoso
para no despertarlo. Ahora
Levi devuelve el nino a su
madre en ademan rapido y sin
decir nada, con los labios
apretados, vuelve a salir
disparado hacia la choza de su
madre. Corre . . . corre con
los labios apretados. Te traigo
un beso, mama! Un beso del
Nino! Y abrazandose a ella, la
besa largo, apretadamente, en
la frente. La madre siente un
latigazo por su cuerpo. Se
incorpora. Abre los ojos. Ve.
Ve a su hijo. Esta curada . ..
y abrazando a su hijo
llora . . . Esta curada! Levi
llora, rie. Mama te traje un
beso del Nino. Le di el
corderito y te traje un
beso . . . Un beso del Mesias!
Y ahora despues de leer
esta leyenda, quizas te
preguntes que puedo yo
hacer. Tu que comulgas que
te arrodillas ante el portal,
que rezas a la Virgen, que
tienes fe, mira a tu alrededor,
en la calle, en la oficina, en tu
vecindario . . . y veras tanta
gente cansada, desenganada,
sin amor, sin fe, sin una meta
ni un ideal, ignorantes de
Jesus, de la cereania de
Dios ... TU SI PUEDES
AYUDAR. Deja que una
influencia de bondad emane
de ti. Demuestra que eres
capaz de OFRECER y de
PEDIR, para que con tus
labios, con tu palabra, con tu
alma, se note que tu . . . tu
tambien estuvistes en la gruta
de Belen.

CHRISTMAS
IS DIFFERENT
tty rpissioi? fyorpes
The homes of many mission countries are
different from ours. They are often huts, hovels
or sheltered corners.
Juan's home, for example, is a shack of
cardboard, metal cans and newspapers. Juan’s
father died at 32 and the boy has fallen victim
to the disease and squalor besetting so many
families in the deprived countries.
Christmas for Juan is different too, as a
missionary visits his hut to minister to his many
needs. Juan is among the lucky ones;
many others live beyond
the reach of a missionary, and
Christmas for them is really bleak!
Help bring the love of Christ to
more Mission-poor. Send a
Christmas gift for them today.
