St. Pius X Moves
Into New Church
BY JOHN PURDY
The parishioners of St. Pius
X parish in Conyers finally
got what they have been
waiting for - a new church!
Father Paul Fogarty, pastor,
celebrated the first Mass in
the newly constructed
building on November 21 of
this year.
St. Pius X parish has an
interesting and somewhat
unique history. Starting
several years ago, Catholic
worshippers in the area who
wanted to attend Mass would
go to Church at the
Monastery of the Holy Spirit,
also in Conyers. As the
number of people attending
Sunday Mass increased, it was
necessary to hold Mass in a
small house at the Monastery.
From there, St. Pius X chapel
was built on the Monastery
grounds to serve the
worshippers.
As time passed, and the
number of Catholic families
in the area grew, it was soon
obvious that the small chapel
wouldn’t hold all of them.
The need for a parish being
realized, St. Pius X parish was
officially established on July
8, 1974, with Father Fogarty
installed as the first pastor.
The Sunday Masses were
thereafter held at the chapel
of White’s Funeral Home on
Milstead Avenue in Conyers.
The Religious Education
classes at that time were being
held at Milstead Recreation
Center. In November of
1974, a seven and one-half
acre tract of land was
purchased for the site of the
new church. The concept of
the church was designed by
Epstein and Hirsch, and the
groundbreaking ceremonies
were held on an overcast but
very happy day last April.

Catholic Education Standards
MINIMUM STANDARDS
FOR TOTAL CATHOLIC
EDUCATION
At the December meeting,
the Archdiocesan Board of
Education requested Father
Richard Kieran, Secretary for
Education, to develop by
June 1977 minimum
standards for an adequate
parish total Catholic
education program based on
existing policy. These
minimum standards include
standards for schools,
religious education of
children, youth ministry,
adult education, and campus
ministry.
All parishes will be
required to meet these
minimum standards,
reflecting the direction set by
“To Teach As Jesus Did”
(USCC, 1972), within 12
months of their approval by
the Archdiocesan Board of
Education and the
Archbishop.
It will be the responsibility
of the Staff of the
Department of Catholic
Education to assist parishes in
meeting these minimum
standards and to report
annually to the
Archdiocesan Board of
Education regarding the
status of parish programs in
relation to these standards.
The first report will be due in
the Spring of 1978.

Christmas. Many of the folks
around the area here will be
heading home for the days of
Christmas, but most will be
here sharing Christmas with
neighbors, friends, and most
importantly with one another
at the Christmas Eucharists.
In every area of our
Archdiocese needs seem to
surface during the Christmas
season. We become acutely
aware of the elderly who will
spend their time with sons
and daughters and other
family members, if they are
still with them. But there will
be others who will sit alone in
apartments in Atlanta or in
tumble-down homes in the
country.

There are the children who
will celebrate Christmas
because someone else cared
to share Christmas with them.
But there will be children in
Atlanta who will only see the
lights of the city as on other
days, or seek to warm
themselves from the damp
cold around a wood-burning
heater at the end of a muddy
road in Banks County. There
are the couples who have and
give, and the couples who
have not and seek. Christmas
is a time of contrasts, just as
the first Christmas was a time
of contrast.
Having served as a priest in
Atlanta I recall the beauty of
the choir, the interior of the
Church building, the
magnificence of the voices
and hearts of all in heralding
the Savior’s birth. In the

“out-regions” the choir may
be five or six, the music may
be without an accompani
ment, and the celebration is
still the same.
And in fact, in Hartwell
this year our organist (who
plays at two other churches
as well as at Sacred Heart)
will not be with us. So a
fiddle (violin) and a french
horn will blend with our
voices to announce the
beginning of the end of
contrasts. And in Toccoa a
guitar will call to mind the
first night “Silent Night” was
sung in a church because the
organ broke down, heralding
the beginning of the end of
contrasts.
I am reminded of the
mediation of Father Karl
Rahner on Christmas. He
writes that God speaks to us
and tells us to light the
candles, to dispel the
darkness, for it is Christmas,
Christmas that lasts forever.
If the candles have the right
to exist more than all the
darkness, each one of us
grows more brightly in the
light of Christ as we open
ourselves to this most
wondrous mystery-God IS
for us, in us, with us, and His
name is Jesus the Lord!
B’rom all the small parishes
throughout our archdiocese,
and from the TOCCOHART
area in particular, a
Jesus-filled Christmas!
