FIRST WOMAN PRIEST - The
Rev. Jacqueline Means, a 40-year-old
convert from Catholicism, is
embraced by the Rt. Rev. Donald J.
Davis, Episcopal Bishop of Erie, Pa.,
after she became the first woman
ON ORDINATION
regularly ordained a priest in the
Episcopal Church. The ordination in
Indianapolis ended a 200-year
history of male domination in the
church.
Catholic Sisters Send Congratulations
CHICAGO (NC) - “We, your Catholic
sisters, greet you joyfully on the occasion
of your ordination,” the National
Assembly of Women Religious (NAWR)
said in an open letter to Sister Mary
Michael Simpson, who is being ordained a
priest of the Episcopal Church.
Sister Mary Michael, a member of the
Episcopalian Order of St. Helena since
1952, was to be ordained in New York
City’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine on
Jan. 9.
“It will be a historic moment for
Sisters in the United States, since one of
us -- you - will now be a priest,” said
the letter signed by Sister Kathleen
Keating of the Sisters of St. Joseph,
NAWR chairperson.
“Our Episcopalian sisters have gone
several miles of the journey ahead of us,
and so are a sign of hope and
encouragement to those Catholic women
who feel called to ordination,” Sister
Kathleen said.
Representing NAWR, Sister Kathleen
and Sister Marquita Finley attended the
general convention of the Episcopal
Church in Minneapolis last September
which approved the ordination of women
to the Episcopal priesthood. NAWR had
also publicly supported the controversial
irregular ordinations of Episcopalian
women prior to September.
Sister Mary Michael is one of 30
Episcopalian women who have been or are
to be ordained in January in the first
ordinations of women since the general
convention approved them.
A former missionary in Liberia and a
trained psychotherapist, she will remain in
her position as a pastoral counselor at the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
NAWR’s membership consists of 4,000
Catholic Sisters in the United States and
Sisters’ councils in nearly 100 dioceses
throughout the country. Several hundred
laypersons and clergymen also belong to
the organization.

Travelling Jesuit Novice At Monastery
BY ANDY MINCEY
Gregg Grovenburg, 18, of
Denver, Colorado, has his
spiritual and professional
career mapped out precisely
but doesn’t always do well
on mundane, geographic
directions.
When Gregg was spotted,
wearing an A-frame back
pack fitted with sleeping
bag and rucksack, walking
north on Georgia Highway
20, he looked like a
walking feature story. When
approached and asked what
his destination was, he
replied that he was headed
for the monastery.
He didn’t seem to be
particularly dismayed that
he was 180 degrees off
course and agreed at the
click of a camera shutter
to swap his story 7 for a
free ride to the Monastery
Of The Holy Ghost.
Gregg is a 1976 graduate
of Rockhurst High School
in Kansas City, Missouri.
Immediately after he was
graduated, he moved to
Denver and made
preparations to enter Regis
College as a Jesuit novice.
His novitiate at St. Regis
will last for two years.
After that he will move on
to St. Louis University in
St. Louis, Missouri, where
he will take an additional
three years college level
study load with a major in
philosophy.
When he is graduated
TRAVELLING JESUIT NOVICE Gregg
Grovenburg will return to college in Denver after
retreat at the Monastery of the Holy Ghost and
short stint at The Village of St. Joseph.

Just off I-285 at Ashford-Dunwoody Road
from St. Louis University,
he will move into a
three-year regency (high
school teaching) program.
He will then finish his
formal training with four
years of study at some
Catholic seminary, yet to
be selected.
After he finished
preparations to enter Regis
College in the spring term,
Gregg and a number of his
classmates left for various
spots in the U.S. to
commence on-the-job
training as Jesuit noviates.
Gregg, by a number of
means of transportation,
made it to Atlanta early
this week. When he finishes
a short retreat at the
Monastery Of The Holy
Ghost, he will return to
Atlanta and work at the
Village of St. Joseph until
it is time to head for
Denver and commence
formal training.
If you see a handsome,
blond youth, walking along
the road wearing an
aluminum A-frame loaded
with camping goodies, stop
and ask him where he is
going. It might be Gregg
Grovenburg and he might
be off his geographic
course.
