CA THOLIC SCHOOLS
Students Sharing Thoughts On Personal Values
6 A Plus For America’
BY SISTER PATRICIA GEARY, GNSH
Curriculum Consultant
The week of February 6-12 has been
designated by the National Catholic
Educational Association as Catholic Schools
Week. During this week, Catholic Schools
across the nation will host countless programs
and activities to herald Catholic Schools’
unique contribution to education in America.
Here in Georgia, Governor George Busbee
has issued a Proclamation citing February
6-12 as Catholic Schools Week. Students and
parents from Archdiocesan Schools witnessed
the signing of the Proclamation.
The Bishops of the United States have
consistently reiterated their commitment to
Catholic education as “The fullest and best
opportunity to realize the three-fold purpose
of Christian education -- to teach doctrine, to
build community and to serve.”
Presently in the Archdiocese of Atlanta,
there are 13 elementary schools, one school
for children with special emotional, social and
educational needs, one archdiocesan high
school and one private high school. Each
school is a “unique setting in which faith can
be realized in the lives of children and young
people.” (“To Teach As Jesus Did,” p. 102)
Archdiocesan Catholic Schools have been
recognized as academically sound through
their accreditation by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools.
Sister Valentina Sheridan, R.S.M.,
Superintendent of Atlanta’s Catholic Schools,
states: “We are proud of the quality of
education provided by our schools in the
Archdiocese of Atlanta. They are ‘A Plus’ for
the State of Georgia because of the values that
are nurtured and the talents that are
developed which help to shape our society.
We have teachers who are dedicated to helping
young people learn to lead meaningful,
productive, and happy lives.”
“Our country, too, has benefited from
Catholic Schools and has rated them
consistently high in achievement,” Sister
Valentina added. “Catholic Schools rate ‘A
Plus’ from America by the mere fact that
millions of children are being educated each
year in a way of life that brings richness,
depth and a moral dimension to our society,”
Sister concluded.
Because of the faith dimension inherent in
Catholic education here in Atlanta, the
schools offer individuals, families, the
community, the country and ultimately the
Church a rich gift not to be found in any
environment.
The American Bishops, in speaking of
Jesus’ first command to teach and of our
centuries-old-commitment to Catholic schools
in their May 6, 1976, pastoral TEACH THEM:
“Our Call now is to all who see with
undimmed sight this same apostolic
responsibility as their own and will join in
carrying out this commitment in the years
ahead: The commitment of handing on the
faith to the next generation, not merely
preserved, but more glorious, more
efficacious, more valued by those who in their
turn will take up the charge to ‘go and
teach’.”
Catholic Schools hold great promise for the
future. They are here to stay, as you will see
during Catholic Schools Week. Plan to see for
yourself by visiting the Catholic School in
your neighborhood . . . see for yourself why
Catholic Schools rate ‘A Plus’ for America -
and for the church.
