Mrs. Howard Smith Arts Award Recipient
The Georgia Council of
the Arts and Humanities has
named Mrs. Howard C. Smith
one of 12 recipients of
Awards in the Arts in the
State. The honor is given
primarily for her association
with the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra, but she has served
in many other capacities.
Mrs. Smith came to
Atlanta in 1930 at the
invitation of an Atlanta
committee concerned with
the cultural growth of the
city. The Julliard Foundation
for Music sent her as a
representative in music
education and administration.
Mrs. Smith is an
r accomplished singer, pianist
; and organist. As Director of
the then established Atlanta
was
! Music Center, she
available to public schools,
colleges, and community
projects for information and
advice on educational
programs. Her efforts
encouraged cooperation
between civic organizations
“in performance” and led to
eventually establishing a
symphony orchestra in
Atlanta.
Mrs. Smith’s
accomplishments also include
past President of the Atlanta
Music Club; helping establish
the All-Star Concert Series;
serving as a director of the
first Atlanta Youth
Symphony, which grew into
our present symphony
orchestra, and founder and
first president of the Atlanta
Symphony Women’s
Association. She is a life

Dear
Happy
DEAR HAPPY, Somebody stole my hus
band. And left a not-so-good imitation in his place.
The man I married 12 years ago was “Mr. Spar
kle. ” The man I see spending every waking week
end hour in front of the TV or behind a newspaper,
is “Mr. Yawn.”
Where’s the fun and excitement I remember?
Should 1 hint around about building a swimming
pool—or taking a cruise? There must be something
I can do. But what is it?
BORED TO TEARS AND THEN SOME.
Dear Bored, Congratulations. You’ve just dis
covered the rut you’re in. But boredom comes
just as easily to people with swimming pools and
condominiums in the islands as it does to the rest
of us. So that isn’t the answer.
You need a change—a complete change—
from your normal, everyday life.
The Marriott Hotel at Perimeter Center has
a neat thing going every weekend that’s really
catching on. The Escape Weekend.
You get about as far away from the hum
drum routine at home as you can imagine. With
out going any real distance at all. You get a
couple of days out of the kids-and-kitchen rut to
relax and have fun, without spending a lot of time
getting there and back.
The Marriott Hotel at Perimeter Center has
a heated indoor pool, a sauna, tennis courts, a
lovely restaurant and a lounge with live enter
tainment for dancing after dinner. You’re right
next door to the Perimeter Shopping Mall, too.
And the nice thing is—it’s a heck of a bargain.
With a room and breakfast-for-two both days,
dinner-for-two one night, free champagne, full
use of the facilities for less than $70 a couple. Or,
take the one-night Escape—champagne, a room,
dinner and breakfast for less than $50 a couple. At
those prices, you can go on the spur of the moment
practically any weekend you wish.
And I’ve got a feeling that one weekend like
this might just bring back “Mr. Sparkle.”

As a member of the parish
of the Cathedral of Christ the

Scout Sunday 1977 will be
very special for Steve and
Kevin. During Mass February
13, they will receive the
Parvuli Dei emblem.
These young Scouts are
typical of the 1,000 plus Boy
Scout family in the
archdiocese being recognized
during Scout Week.
Scout Week is a
celebration, recalling the 77
years of Scouting in our land.
It is also a time of assessment,
reviewing the program and
our use of it.
The history of the Scout
movement gives the key to its
purpose and success. There
was Scouting in America
before there was a “Boy
Scouts of America.”
Community groups were
using the Scouting program
which they had heard about
from Europe, as a part of
their service to youth.
During the first six years
(1910-16) this movement
became so popular
throughout America that the
Congress of the United States
recognized Scouting’s
potential as an educational
resource for groups interested
in a positive program for
youth. In 1916, the Congress
granted a charter to the Boy
Scouts of America.
This charter is issued to a
community organization or
church, to use the Scouting
program under its “own”
leadership. The charter and
its proven program are given
to an organization to serve its
youth and help accomplish
the objectives of “that”
organization.
In practice, Scouting

happens in two ways: (1) The
PROGRAM of the Boy
Scouts of America designed
to implant in youth desirable
qualities of character based
on a belief in God, and (2)
The SUPPORT SERVICE
SYSTEM of the Boy Scouts
of America aimed at assisting
the partner organizations
k using the program.
Regrettably, many
parishes and institution
leaders who are vitally
concerned about youth, do
not understand Scouting as a
resource program for “them,”
but as something they
“sponsor” for the Boy Scouts
of America. Perhaps this is
one reason why there is a
decline in membership within
the Archdiocese. It is an
erroneous reason and not one
shared by the leaders of the
Church.
Pope Paul told a group of
international Scout leaders in
audience: “Having ourself
known the Scout movement
very closely for a long time
past, we appreciate the
educational qualities of this
magnificent association and
its ability to develop the best
elements of personality in the
souls of young men.”
The U.S. Catholic
Conference seeing the value
of the Scouting program to
form and educate appoints an
episcopal advisor to
coordinate the movement in
the Church.
We have three entire
councils - Atlanta, Athens,
Rome and a part of three
other council areas in the
archdiocese. These are local
Service Centers to inform,
guide and help the scout units
under Catholic auspices. The
Boy Scouts of America staff
are more than cooperative.
Their one intent is to help us
and other organizations fulfill
our common goal: the
character formation of youth.
The Diocesan Scout
Committee chaired by Pat
McGinn plays an important
role in leading our Scout
family. Scouting is
non-religious but at the same
time “maintains that no boy
can grow into the best kind
of citizen without
recognizing his obligation to
God.” It is left to each
sponsoring partner to
interpret and embellish this
principle for its own people.
This is one of the main
functions of a Diocesan
Committee.
The most beautiful and
practical example is our
religious emblem programs.
These are not the property of
Boy Scouts of America but
have been written by
the National Catholic
Committee on Scouting as
concrete ways of fulfilling
Scouting’s first goal: “On my
honor I will do my duty to
God . . .”
There has been a
significant increase in the use
of these programs here and
throughout the country in
the last two years. Happily
the statistics show that while
total membership is down,
Church input or Christian
formation of Catholics in the
program is up.
Our Diocesan Committee
is known throughout the
Atlanta area for its
sponsorship of a Scout
Retreat each Fall. Already
small committees are working
to increase participation by
other churches. The tentative
date is September 30-October
2.
Another highlight on the
calendar for the Catholic
Committee is the annual
Scout Banquet with
Archbishop Donnellan
presiding. This year one of
our newer Parishes is hosting
the event: Saint Thomas the
Apostle in Smyrna on April
16.
A special feature this year
will be the recognizing of all
Eagle Scout Award holders.
During Scout Week we
pray and reflect on these
thoughts, beautifully summed
up in the charge given by the
bishop of Trenton to his
Scout family:
“You have in your hands a
God-given opportunity to
mold the mind, the heart, and
yes, the souls of countless
boys in the diocese. Thus
molded they move from your
influence and begin to affect
the lives of those with whom
they come in contact. May
you work in such a manner
that you reach even more
boys; that they become
apostles themselves; that they
reflect you, your church, and
Christ Himself.”
Hopefully all the Steve’s
and Kevin’s in our diocesan
family will do just that.
