Un Paso Mas
Por Padre R. Piedra
A pesar del Intenso y
extraordinario trabajo
desarrollado por el Padre
Piedra durante estas dos
semanas de estancia entre
nosotros, nos hemos atrevido
a pedirle, como ultimo
esfuerzo, unas palabras por
escrito sobre su experiencia
en esta segunda Mision
Catolica de Atlanta. Siempre
bueno y caritativo, el Padre
Piedra no se nego, y aqui
quedan sus palabras como
ultimo adios a esta
comunidad hispana de
Atlanta, que estamos seguros
ocupara ya para siempre un
puesto imborrable en las
memorias intimas de su
quehacer misionero. He aqui
sus palabras:
Este ano, la Mision ha
alcanzado el pleno de lo que
considero ser una mision
ideal, o casi ideal. Es decir, ha
sido medio de una renovacion
espiritual para casi todos los
sectores y niveles de personas
de habla espanola. Se les ha
llegado a los pobres y a los
que estan en mejores
circunstancias, a los jovenes y
a los mayores de edad, asi
como a los que tienen ninos
pequenos, e incluso a los
mismos ninos. La gracia de la
Mision ha llegado a los sanos
y a los enfermos, a los libres y
a los presos, a los que han
tenido la dicha de una
educacion religiosa y a los
que carecen de ella, a los que
estan envueltos en
movimientos de renovacion
cristiana, como los Cursillos y
la Renovacion Carismatica, y
a los que no lo estan; a todos.
El ano pasado, el grupo
que organizo la Primera
Mision, trabajo sin haber
tenido experiencia previa
alguna. Era como poner un
pie en un lago frio y de
noche. No se sabia como iba a
resultar. Sin embargo, como
Dios es quien maneja toda la
Mision, se dieron los frutos
que El quiso, y estos frutos
resultaron maravillosos.
Este ano, con la
experiencia adquirida y
utilizando los valores que hay
en la comunidad latina de
Atlanta (y me asombro y le
doy gracias al Senor por las
bendiciones que ha
derramado al respecto),
comenzando con los jovenes
y terminando con los
mayores de edad, hemos visto
tambien muy buenos
esfuerzos en la preparacion de
la Mision y una nutrida
asistencia a los actos de la
misma. Los frutos los
veremos, sin duda, muy
pronto.
La Mision esta vez se
dividio en dos partes. La
primera semana, o Pre-Mision,
se dedico a estudios biblicos,
misas en distintos lugares, y .
otras charlas de formacion
entre hermanos de habla
hispana de distintos paises y
niveles economicos. En
general, se puede decir que
hubo bastante cooperacion, a
pesar del frio y de la hora, a
veces tardia, para los que
tenian necesidad de
madrugar. Si no siempre hubo
mucha gente, siempre sin
embargo se celebro una
reunion llena de fe,
manifestandose, a traves de
las pregun tas hechas, un
hambre mani fiesta de Dios y
de su Palabra en la
comunidad latina. Y los que
asistieron, esperamos que
compartan y llevan este fruto
a los que no pudieron asistir.
La segunda semana se ha
desarrollado en la catedral de
Cristo Rev, siendo sus
momentos climacticos la
visita y palabras del Senor
Arzobispo, la Uncion de los
enfermos en comun y la
concelebracion de los
sacerdotes de habla hispana,
con la que se ha clausurado la
Mision.
Es cierto que Dios no les
falta a los que trabajan por
El; y no es men os cierto que
en la comunidad latina de
Atlanta hay muchos que
aman a Dios muchisimo. Uno
llega a pensar si el trabajo que
desempenan en su Vida diaria
no sera “part-time,” mientras
que se dedication al Senor y a
sus cosas es “full-time.” Yo
les felicito de todo corazon.
Y le pido al Senor que los
colme de su luz y fuerza a fin
de que sigan luchando y
recogiendo los frutos de esta
Mision, que siempre se
considera solo un comienzo,
UN PASO MAS, de los que
peregrinamos hacia la meta
que nos espera, la vida etema.
Hasta aqui, el Padre
Piedra.
Ni que decir tiene que le
agradecemos al Padre estas
ultimas palabras de aliento y
estimulo apostolico. Y a la
vez, tambien nosotros damos
gracias al Senor por habemos
concedido la gracia de
disfrutar espiritualmente de la
presencia, la palabra y el
ejemplo de este sacerdote
ejemplar. Su recuerdo y su
mensaje de amor y de paz,
perduraran entre nosotros en
constante memoria, mientras
sus oraciones y las nuestras,
recordando nuestras mutuas
necesidades, seguiran
elevandose unidas ante la
presencia del Padre comun.
Por el equipo de la Mision,
Jose Montero.

FATHER ROBERT CARSON
offered his Lenten Renewal to an
overflow crowd at St. Jude’s in Sandy
Springs last week. The crowds, at least
1,000 strong each night, came early and
stayed late. Father Carson is a member
of the Nobertine Order. He is presently

Marist Juniors Get Rings
Senior class rings were recently presented to juniors at Marist
School in a religious ceremony in the school chapel. The Class
of 1978 is by far the largest class in Marist history, with 160
students, 134 boys and 26 girls.
Father James L. Hartnett, S.M., principal, officiated at the
ring Mass and placed the rings on the students’ fingers. Father
Hartnett spoke on the responsibilities facing the rising seniors.
Class officers gave readings at the Mass. President Bob Harris
of Colewood Way and Vice-President Terry Chesser of Chancery
Lane, Chambiee, were the readers.
After receiving their rings, all of the juniors read a
dedication. “We, the Marist Class of 1978, would like to express
thanks to God for having the chance to make it this far in life.
The ring we have received symbolizes a lot to us ... It is a sign
of accomplishment - reaching the top of the school -- becoming
the leaders of today’s student body, and the leaders of
tomorrow’s world. This ring represents Marist and all the joys
and sorrows experienced at Marist. . .”
After the Mass, the class sang the Marist alma mater.

A FEW WORDS FROM
YOUR GAS COMPANY
Ones Of Thanks, Explanation And Caution.
WE WISH TO EXPRESS OUR
SINCERE THANKS to all those
residential and commercial customers
who are cooperating with the appeal
to conserve energy. This appeal which
has been made by President Carter,
Governor Busbee, and ourselves, has
received admirable response from a
great many of you. It is greatly appre
ciated and we want you to know that
it is working. We estimate that on Sat
urday, January 29, your efforts saved
170 million cubic feet of gas. We
hope that all of your neighbors and
businesses who have not yet realized
the gravity of the situation will join in
your efforts.
Also a special word of thanks to
the news media—radio, television and
newspapers — who have responded
so wholeheartedly to our need to
communicate quickly and contin
uously to our 745,000 customers
throughout the state. Their help and
your response has been of great value.
It may have prevented a critical period
from becoming an emergency.
A WORD OF EXPLANA
TION—That word is “weather!’ As
has been widely reported, this is the
worst winter on record so far. Through
January 15, it was 43% colder than
normal, using much of the reserve gas
available to our Company and our
pipeline suppliers.Then the mean
temperature dropped to an average
of 16 degrees for the next four days
(in Metro Atlanta area). During the
entire month of January, the temper
ature has been as high as “normal”
only two days. This bitter weather not
only sent gas consumption soaring to
new records, but it also greatly ham
pered the production, gathering and
transmission of natural gas.
The weather gripped not only
Georgia and the South but much of
the nation. This prevented the emer
gency transfer of supplies from one
area to another.
We hope that the weather will be
more moderate the rest of the winter
but we can’t count on it. Both our
Company and our pipeline suppliers
are trying to obtain more gas to rebuild
our reserves for future cold spells.
In the long run, the solution to
gas supply is far more complex, but
the announced plans of President
Carter to draw up and implement an
overall long-range energy program is
most encouraged.
An important part of such a pro
gram would be to provide adequate
incentives for exploration of the large
reserves of natural gas that still exist.
A WORD OF CAUTION must
be emphasized—we cannot relax our
conservation efforts. Nor can we re
sume service to industry at this time.
We are in a prolonged period of critical
supply of natural gas. It may last
weeks — even into warm weather.
Therefore to get through this
winter with minimum discomfort and
to prevent curtailment of gas service
to commercial customers, those of us
who are conserving gas must continue
to do so. And those who are not,
must join in.
As President Carter has said, we
are all in this energy crunch together—
no matter what you use for fuel—and
we must pull together. We ask that you
use your ingenuity and resourceful
ness to save energy in homes and
businesses.The most important sav
ing is to set back thermostats to 65°
or lower when the area is occupied
and lower than that when it is not.
Again we thank you for your
help and your spirit of cooperation.
