POPE PAUL:
‘Open Soul To Beauty’
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Pope Paul VI energetically urged
young people Feb. 9 to get out their backpacks and hit the road
to rediscover a sense of religion and a feeling for God. “Man’s
soul must be open to beauty, to wonder and to the beings of the
universe,” the 79-year-old Pontiff told his regular weekly
audience. “This is the prime way to become religious once again
-- especially for you young people who still have the ability to
play sports and to go to the mountains, to the sea and
elsewhere.

Without a doubt, it has been cold. In fact, I cannot
remember such a cold winter in Georgia in over 21 years.
Welcome to the “sunbelt.” But more than the cold, we’ve
become just a little more creative. In both Toccoa and Hartwell,
the gas companies have asked all the churches to cut back on
their services. The old building in Hartwell had frozen water
pipes for 10 days (fortunately, they did not burst). And a lot of
folks in both parishes have been without water for a good while,
especially those who live in older homes and trailers.
And the schools? Not just because of the snow, but mainly
due to the gas shortage, they have been closed for quite a spell.
This has caused not only a greater sense of community among
families, but some real worries on the part of the kids that
they’ll be going to school throughout the summer of ‘77!
So what to do about it? Well, last week I was running around
visiting newborns and the hospitalized and finally ended up in
Martin, Georgia, on the way back to Toccoa. Coming down the
road there was before my eyes a cloud of smoke. Aware that the
winter cold brings increased demands on small home heaters, I
though that Leo’s house was afire. Rounding the bend and into
the driveway, I saw the fire. Leo was out as he does every
Sunday night cooking hamburgers on his grill. He had a huge
electric wire spool turned on its end to protect him from the
wind and enough clothes on that I wondered how he moved.
Some things never change, no matter how cold it gets!
Inside a lot of homes in the rural areas that are usually
heated with LP gas, folks have gone back to the old kerosene
heaters, that can heat a home for less than a dollar a day. Some
folks who even work for the power companies have shut off
their gas and electric heat and installed wood burning heaters in
their fireplaces. We can become quite creative, or maybe just old
fashioned, when the circumstances dictate.
Many years ago, before all the genuine concern for
conservation, the Christophers published a little booklet entitled
“God’s Good Earth and Ours.” The booklet reflected on the
natural resources of our earth in terms of our responsibility as
Christians. It called for the real and necessary concern on the
part of all, and especially on the part of Christians, to re-think
our use of the earth and its natural resources.
The National Catholic Rural Life Conference for years has
been speaking to the issues that center on our use and abuse of
natural resources. If what the weathermen predict comes true,
we had best reflect ever more deeply on our lives as Christians
and the earth that is our stewardship. Sometimes we forget that
the Christ who died on the Cross shed his blood on this soil, this
earth, and so is rooted in all that we see, feel, experience, not
only as persons, but as those who are the stewards of creation.
Legislation is important, but that legislation begins with each
one of us. As Catholic Christians, we have a real responsibility
to the creation we celebrate in sacrament with wheat, grape,
water, oil . ..

AID FOR AGED
WITH EMPHYSEMA
Sufferers with emphysema,
asthma, bronchitis and other
respiratory problems are
often told by their physicians
to use a program of
respiratory therapy - usually
the use of a respirator at
home. That used to mean an
investment in the purchase of
a respirator or the rental of
one with monthly payments
that go on and on.
Now, Complete Breathing
Care, serving Florida for over
10 years, provides a way for
senior citizens and others
who are disabled with
respiratory problems to
obtain a respirator and
complete service, including
oxygen if needed, at no cost
Catechetical Directory
(Continued from page 1)
Catholic Bishops, at which
priests, religious and laity
discussed the document with
the Bishops.
Some 76,000 responses to
the draft were submitted.
With the aid of computers,
they were categorized by the
Directory staff in Washington
and studied carefully. The
responses indicated strong
support for the project in
principle but they also
pointed to many flaws in the
first draft, especially its
length, organization, and
wordiness.
The consultation process
itself was widely praised and
according to a report on the
responses, was “the most
favorably received aspect” of
the project up to that time.
Through the consultation, the
report noted, “any interested
person has an opportunity to
express his or her thinking.”
On this basis the
document has been
substantially overhauled
during the past year. A
number of sections have been
rewritten several times. The
project of this work is the
second draft now in
circulation for additional
comments.
In his report to the
bishops in November,
Archbishop Whealon said his
committee regards the new
text as “considerably
improved” over the earlier
one.
“It is not perfect -- but it
is, we think, workable,
perfectable,” he said. “It is a
good basis for refinement
through subtraction or
addition of what is still
needed.”
In its present form the
document contains nine
chapters, along with a preface
and several appendices. The
chapters deal with the
catechetical ministry in
general; revelation and faith;
“the Church in catechesis,”
including an outline of “basic
teachings”; the relationship
of catechesis to liturgy, the
Sacraments, and prayer;
catechesis and social ministry;
a description of human
development from the
viewpoint of education
psychology; catechetical
personnel; catechetical
organization; and catechetical
resources.”
OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION STAFF
helped in planning the National Catechetical Directory
Consultation Meeting. Left to right are Sister Jean
Meier, C.S.J., Sister Catherine Conegan, R.S.M., and
Father Jim Kelly. Standing are Sister Kathleen Regan,
CSJ and Dr. Walter Kahnle. Copies of NCD are
available from the Religious Education Office
(881-6131).
