SINCE ITS BEGINNING SIX YEARS AGO, Corpus

the largest parish in Georgia. Shown is an overall view

Corpus Christi Parish Family Of Stone Mountain
Six years ago the Archbishop and his consultors designated
Stone Mountain to be the next new parish to open in the
archdiocese. In the Spring of 1971, Father Joseph Beltran was
appointed pastor to establish this new parish. The immediate
response and interest of the People was indicated at a meeting
when they voted to name the new parish, Corpus Christi; which
name was enthusiastically approved by the Archbishop.
Two-hundred and two families registered as the first
parishioners of this new parish. Today, almost six years later,
Corpus Christi is the largest parish in Georgia with a registration
of 1,699 families; well over 6,000 individuals.
In June of 1971, Father Beltran took up residence in an
apartment donated by Charles Mueller. The Lake Royal
Apartment Complex became the center of an exciting Parish
Family Life. Daily Mass consecrated this area, Parish meetings
and much planning filled that first month. On July 11, 1971
Archbishop Donnellan offered the first Parish Mass for the
infant Parish Family: Corpus Christi of Stone Mountain was
bom in the humble hall of Stone Mountain Elementary School.
Through the cpoperation and generosity of the DeKalb County
School System and the personal concern of Charles Fowler,
principal, Stone Mountain Elementary School became our home
every week-end until March 30, 1974. It was not unusual to
hear a student say, “I go to Stone Mountain Elementary
Church.”

On March 30, 1974, the young, vibrant and growing Parish
Family moved into its new Church Building and Parish Center.
Again the first Mass, offered by our Sheppard, Archbishop
Donnellan, consecrated the corner of Mountain View Drive and
Sheppard Road. Another beginning, another monument to the
Faith of the Catholic People who gave of their time, talents and
love to see our Parish Church a living reality.
Within months after we moved into our new quarters, we saw
an unprecedented growth . . . and we saw the inevitable .'. . the
need for additional parochial facilities. In January 1976, ground
was broken for another building to provide for the needs of this
dynamic Christian Community.
In the late Fall of 1976 the new and larger Parish Center was
completed. The new facility conforms to the architecture and
landscape of the first buildings; and gives a breathtaking view to
all who pass by. The new Parish Center has a Parish Hall of
6,000 square feet, complete kitchen facilities, showers,
lavatories and storage on the lower level. The second level houses
the priests of Corpus Christi and seven additional class rooms.
The buildings are connected by a covered walk way and blend
together most handsomely to give a concrete evidence of the
Catholic Faith in Stone Mountain, Georgia. The new facilities
were designed by Fred Aldorando of Bothwell, Jenkins, Slay
and Associates. The Olympic Construction Company, under the
able direction of Ed Rowe, built this fine ediface.
Today, less than six years since that first Mass in Stone
Mountain Elementary School, the Corpus Christi Parish Family
is a dynamic evidence of the growth of the Catholic Faith in
Georgia. The School of Religion Program of Corpus Christi
reaches out to over 1,600 students each week; under the
direction of Sister Linda and Sister Dolores of the Humility of
Mary Sisters, Villa Maria, Penna. The Adult Religion Education
Program offers anything from basic Catholic Teachings -
Current Catholic Issues -- to teacher training and formation.
The Liturgical and Sacramental Life of Corpus Christi is
served by a Latin Quartet: Father Joseph Beltran, pastor, Father
Joseph Aquino, Father Frank Giusta and Father Richard Lopez,
assistants. The priests share in the Religious Education Programs
and give the Parish Family a true witness of dedication.
At the present time several dynamic committees of the Parish
Family are busy working on plans for a comprehensive Youth
Program, an Athletic Program and a more complete Adult
Religious Program that will afford every parishioner something
to fulfill his or her needs and wants. An active and well balanced
Prayer Group meets frequently to bring the renewing powers of
prayer into our lives. And it is to all these dedicated Catholic-
People that we owe so much thanks for all they are doing to
make Corpus Christi Parish Family a truly Catholic Christian
Community.
These first six years of Corpus Christi Family can bo summed
up in a few words - DREAMS AND DEDICATION: DRIVE
AND DETERMINATION. The dreams and drives, the
dedication and determination of our Parishioners, our Sisters
and our Priests, all mixed with love are the formula of this
Parish Family. Corpus Christi Parish Family is alive and growing
because we know Christ has called us to be His witnesses of
Faith here in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

PAGE 3—The Georgia Bulletin, March 3,1977
Rome — A City Ever Eternal
(EDITOR'S NOTE: Monsignor
John F. McDonough, Rector of
the Cathedral, has recently
returned from Rome where he
studied for three months in a
continuing education program.)
Father Burtenshaw, newly
ordained Editor of The
Georgia Bulletin, has asked
that I write a couple of
articles on my recent stay in
Rome, Italy, while attending
the Institute for Continuing
Theological Education.
However, before beginning
my personal observations,
some background on the
Institute will be beneficial.
Broadly speaking, the goal
of the Institute for
Continuing Theological
Education is to introduce the
participants in the course to
the ‘mindset’ of the modern
world, and to an
appreciation of the shifts in
‘meaning and value’ which
have brought a profound
cultural revolution, thus
enabling the participants to
have a modern theological
foundation upon which to
base their preaching,
teaching, catechesis, adult
education, liturgy, and all
other pastoral activities.
The Institute for
Continuing Theological
Education is sponsored by
the Bishops of the United
States. There are two
sessions, Spring and Fall. It is
open chiefly to Diocesan
priests of the United States.
About 35 priests attend each
session.
During my three months
in Rome while studying at
the Institute, I lived at the
Casa Santa Maria, the home
of the Graduate Department
of the North American
College, located on Via
Dell’Umilta, in the heart of
downtown Rome, very near
the famous Trevi Fountain,
featured in the movie, “Three
Coins in the Fountain.” On a
previous trip to Rome, I had
thrown a number of coins in
the Trevi Fountain whith
probably accounts for my
return to Rome.
In Rome, one lives in two
worlds. One is the world of
the present, the here and now
political and existential Rome
- a city beset by social and
ecclestical changes, of much
turbulence and unrest, deep
and disturbing. It is
frightening to many, exciting
and necessary to others.
And then there is the
world of Rome, eternally
beautiful, capital of the
ancient world, guardian of
civilization, center of the
Christian world. Formerly, it
was the powerful mistress of
the Roman Empire; now the
jealous mistress of the noble
works of art, temples,
monuments, churches which
on every side call the
attention and excite the
imagination of the visitor to
the Eternal City. And the
priests making the Institute
were visitors to Rome. For
some it was a first visit,
for others, it was a return to
familiar places, but for all it
was a unique opportunity to
study the history of Rome
visually, at close range, to feel
its beauty, to stir up once
again all the haunting
memories that belong to it.
The structure of the Institute
was arranged to encourage
sightseeing.
And so almost daily small
groups would go on walking
tours of Rome. Occasionally,
the entire group would go by
bus to some distant shrine:
Into the hill country of
Umbria to the town of Assisi,
where St. Francis, the poor
Msgr. McDonough
man of Assisi, lived. By
simply living the way Christ
lived and inspiring his
followers to do the same, he
changed dramatically the
course of Christianity. Or to
the monastery of Subiaco
high in the mountains of
Italy, 50 miles east of Rome,
where St. Benedict lived
alone for three years in a cave
hollowed out of the
mountain, before he
established the permanent
Foundation of the
Benedictine Order of Monte
Cassino.
We concelebrated Mass
there, mindful of the
austerity of Benedict’s life
and also of the spiritual
preparation necessary for the
beginning of any great work.
Mass was also concelebrated
in the catacombs, the original
burial place of the early
Christians. Like the pagan
sepulchres, the catacombs
were all situated outside the
city along the main
highroads. Concelebrating the
Liturgy in shrines such as the
catacombs or other major
churches was always a moving
experience. There seemed to
be a special feeling of God’s
Presence, an urgency to
remember the past gratefully,
and a realization of how
fortunate we were to have the
privilege of this experience.
But, of course, the charm
of Rome is not limited to its
churches. Its charm lies in
large part in its diversity, its
history, its culture and
urbanity. And in our daily
walks an effort was made to
see as much as possible. Day
after day an hour or two was
spent at these historic
shrines:
The Colloseum, one of the
grandest ruins of ancient

Rome, with its memories of
wild animals and gladiators,
and its fearful experience of
barbarities in the Christian
persecutions of the second
and third centuries, now
consecrated to the memory
of those martyrs who
perished in it.
The Roman Forum, at
first a market place and
center of trade, and later the
focus on Roman life, religious
and political. Here memory
recalls that the Roman Senate
had its meetings and the
destinies of the world were
discussed. The Forum was
abandoned for centuries, but
today the tourist can marvel
and enjoy the glorious
remains of the old Roman
Forum due to the
restorations made by the
Italian government.
The Pantheon, the only
ancient building in Rome
which is in perfect
preservation, rescued from
decay through its dedication
to Catholic worship. Built in
27 B.C., it was magnificently
rebuilt in 110-125 A.D. by
Hadrian in circular form. It
remains today in its beautiful
original form. It is the burial
place of the kings of Italy,
and also of Raphael and
many other artists. When
Bernini, at the age of 26, was
made architect of St. Peter’s
and began work on the
bronze baldaechino over the
High Altar, there was a
shortage of bronze. This was
solved by the drastic decision
to strip the roof of the most
famous building in Rome, the
Pantheon, which led to the
comment, “What the Barbari
dared not do was done by the
Barberini.” Barberini was the
family name of Pope Urban
VIII, who commissioned
Bernini.
There were so many places
to see, sacred and profane:
The Arches of Titus and
Constantine, the monument
of King Victor Emmanuel II,
the Bernini Figures in the
Piazza Navona, the Spanish
Steps, the Via Veneto, St.
Paul Outside the Wall, St.
Mary Major, St. John Lateran
- the list is endless.
But, for all of their beauty
and uniqueness, none can
compare with the majesty,
the grandeur, the imposing
sublimity of St. Peter’s, for
the Basilica of St. Peter’s is
one of the wonders of the
world, and perhaps the most
stupendous of all. No one
who has not seen it can
conceive its stateliness and
magnificence. The above
words might well seem
exaggerated and prejudicial,
but not to the millions of
visitors to St. Peter’s.
From the obelisk in St.
Peter’s Square to the Bernini
Canopy at the High Altar, the
mind is boggled by one
wonder after another: The
quadruple colonnade by
Bernini, Mademo’s Facade,
Michelangelo’s exquisite Pieta
executed when he was but
25, the central nave inlaid
with beautiful marble
measuring 614 feet in length,
St. Peter’s statue, dating back
to the fifth century. For ages
this statue has been the
object of such veneration that
the kisses of the faithful have
polished and worn its right
foot.
And then, Michelangelo’s
Masterpiece, the Dome of St.
Peter’s. When Paul III gave
Michelangelo unlimited
power, Michelangelo
exclaimed he would raise the
Pantheon in the air. To get
some idea of time span of the
construction of St. Peter’s,
remember that the
cornerstone was laid by Pope
Julius II on April 18, 1506,
and the new Basilica by Pope
Urban VIII in 1626. Bernini’s
Baldaechino was erected in
1633 and his colonnade in
1667 - a span of 161 years.
There are so many works
of art in St. Peter’s that, even
though our little groups went
frequently there, we only
touched the minimum, and
yet our faith was enhanced
and deepened tremendously,
and we needed it. Our classes
were concerned with change
and dynamism and
contemporary studies - the
old giving way to the new -
new philosophies, new
theologies, new social
doctrines. Our daily visits to
the monuments and churches
of Rome gave us the balance
needed in an everchanging
world, for we saw Firsthand
the end result of genius in so
many art forms, in so many
diverse ways, all much
inspired and motivated by the
Church, all much the end
result of faith and prayer.
Next week, I will write
about our theological studies
in Rome.
Dear
Happy
DEAR HAPPY, Somebody stole my hus
band. And left a not-so-good imitation in his place.
The man I married 12 years ago was “Mr. Spar
kle. ” The man I see spending every waking week
end hour in front of the TV or behind a newspaper,
is “Mr. Yawn. ”
Where’s the fun and excitement I remember?
Should I hint around about building a swimming
pool—or taking a cruise? There must be something
I can do. But what is it?
BORED TO TEARS AND THEN SOME.
Dear Bored, Congratulations. You’ve just dis
covered the rut you’re in. But boredom comes
just as easily to people with swimming pools and
condominiums in the islands as it does to the rest
of us. So that isn’t the answer.
You need a change—a complete change—
from your normal, everyday life.
The Marriott Hotel at Perimeter Center has
a neat thing going every weekend that’s really
catching on. The Escape Weekend.
You get about as far away from the hum
drum routine at home as you can imagine. With
out going any real distance at all. You get a
couple of days out of the kids-and-kitchen rut to
relax and have fun, without spending a lot of time
getting there and back.
The Marriott Hotel at Perimeter Center has
a heated indoor pool, a sauna, tennis courts, a
lovely restaurant and a lounge with live enter
tainment for dancing after dinner. You’re right
next door to the Perimeter Shopping Mall, too.
And the nice thing is—it’s a heck of a bargain.
With a room and breakfast-for-two both days,
dinner-for-two one night, free champagne, full
use of the facilities for less than $70 a couple. Or,
take the one-night Escape—champagne, a room,
dinner and breakfast for less than $50 a couple. At
those prices, you can go on the spur of the moment
practically any weekend you wish.
And I’ve got a feeling that one weekend like
this might just bring back "Mr. Sparkle.”
