Archbishop’s Bishop
Has Georgia Tie
BY JOHN E. MARKWALTER
Archbishop Fulton J.
Sheen told a story about a
bishop who is no stranger to
Georgia when he addressed
school students at Savannah’s
Cathedral on Friday morning,
March 18.
The archbishop’s story
from his youth was of an
experience with Bishop John
L. Spalding, a former bishop
of Peoria, Illinois. This is the
same Bishop Spalding for
whom the Chapel at the
University of Georgia, in
Athens, is dedicated, having
been donated by late
Atlantan, Hughes Spalding,
Sr., his cousin.
The tenth anniversary of
the chapel’s dedication and
100th anniversary of Bishop
Spalding’s ordination as a
bishop were recently
observed at the University.

probably in the sixth or
seventh grade and big to me

‘Spalding Institute.’ Now that
was the High School named
after him. That was a very
diplomatic answer for a boy.

Among the members of the late Bishop Spalding's family in
the Archdiocese of Atlanta are Father John Schroder of Ignatius
House, Jack Spalding, Editor of the Atlanta JOURNAL, Dr.
Phinizy Spalding of the University of Georgia History
Department in Athens and Atlanta attorney Hughes Spalding.
Among Bishop Spalding’s
relatives in attendance at the
Athen’s celebration were Dr.
and Mrs. Phinizy Spalding,
Mr. and Mrs. George Craft,
Father John Schroder, S.J.,
and Jonathan Schroder, who
is currently a student at the
University of Georgia.
Archbishop Sheen told the
Savannah young people that
when he walked into the
Cathedral there was
something that came back to
his mind that happened when
he was the age of some of
them:
“I was an altar boy in my
Cathedral of Peoria, Illinois. I
served the bishop every
morning, Bishop John L
Spalding. This particular
morning, at the Offertory of
the Mass, when I was to give
him the wine and the water, I
dropped the wine cruet.
“Now, I want to tell you
that there is no atomic
explosion in all the world
that can equal in intensity the
dropping of a wine cruet on
marble floors in the presence
of a bishop in a Cathedral! I
was frightened to death. I'
wondered what he would say
to me when he came out.
“He called me over and he

Father John Schroder Is Literally ‘Back Home’
(Continued from page 1)
Between each half-hour
talk, ample time is given for
personal meditation and
prayer. At some point during
the weekend, each retreatant
spends 15 minutes alone in
the chapel with the Eucharist.
“Through the Gospel and
writings of Saint Ignatius, a
retreatant can get it all
together. It is a real spiritual
experience and one never to
be forgotten,” Father
Schroder added. “The
highlight is probably the time
spent alone with Christ in the
Eucharist. The retreatant is
there and Christ is there.
When will they be alone
together again? That’s an
excellent meditation!”
The history of Ignatius
House dates to 1957, when
Mrs. Suzanne Spalding
Schroder offered her
property and home to the
New Orleans Province of the
Society of Jesus for the
purpose of establishing a
retreat house for the men and
women of Georgia. The offer
was accepted on the
condition that the property
could be utilized for such a
purpose. Then Bishop Francis
E. Hyland of the Atlanta
Diocese heartily approved the
undertaking.
In May 1957, Father M.V.
Jarreau, SJ, came to Atlanta
to finalize plans. It was
found that Mrs. Schroder’s
property would not be
sufficient for the purpose so
she and her son, William,
added to the original gift to
complete the, 19.72 acres of
land now owned by Ignatius
House.
The
House
50-bedroom Retreat
dedicated
was
on
December 16, 1960 and the
first retreat was held the
following January. Mrs.
Schroder had died in
December 1958, before she
could see her dream finalized.
The Retreat House is the
Suzanne Spalding Schroder
Memorial in her honor.
Father Harold Cooper, SJ,
was the first Jesuit in charge
of Ignatius House. He was
succeeded by Father John
Lawrence Hein, SJ, who
remained at Ignatius House
for 16 years.
During the years, the
facilities at Ignatius House
have been used by groups of
all faiths. The modem,
air-conditioned retreat house
has grown in popularity to
the extent that it is often
booked months in advance. It
has been the setting for
Cursillos and SEARCH of
Atlanta programs and was the
birthplace of the Marriage
Encounter program in the
state.
Father Schroder hopes
that in years to come, a
Catholic retreat will be
booked at Ignatius House
every weekend of the year.
Immediate plans, however,
are for retreats two weekends
a month. In addition to local
groups, Father Schroder plans
to invite groups from other
parts of Georgia and from
areas around Chattanooga,
Tenn., and Greenville, S.C.,
to attend retreats.
To assist with his ministry,
Father Schroder will soon be
joined by Father James
Carroll, SJ, and another
Jesuit, not yet assigned.
Father Charles Bartles, who
teaches at Marist, also resides
at Ignatius House.
Reservations for retreats
may be made by writing
Ignatius House, 6700
Riverside Drive, NW, Atlanta
30328 or by calling Father
Schroder at 255-0503. There
is no charge for attending a
retreat, although donations
are accepted through*
unmarked envelopes left in
the guest rooms.
Mrs. Ada Myers at
974-4670 maintains a
schedule of events at Ignatius
House and can confirm the
availability of the facilites.
So, Father John Schroder
is back home, literally, and he
welcomes everybody to be his
house guest for a few days!
SUZANNE SPALDING SCHRODER MEMORIAL,
a modern hotel-like center at Ignatius House, will
house 50 retreatants in private rooms with baths. Some
rooms have double beds for greater occupancy.

Archbishop Sheen—
you are to go to Louvain and
someday you will be just as I
am.’
“I went home and told my
mother and she said, ‘Yes,
Louvain is a city in Belgium
where there is the oldest
Catholic university in the
world and that is where
Bishop Spalding studied.’
“Now, I never really
thought of this again until I
was ordained a priest two
years and was sent off to
train in Belgium and I said,
‘this is where Bishop Spalding
told me to go!’ I never
thought that he meant that 1
should be a bishop, only that
I should be a priest.”
(Continued from page 1)
“And that’s what can
happen to a civilization. We
can cross a line where we
completely change our
nature.”
The archbishop then went
to the second Greek word for
love - Philia.
“Philia is love for
fellowman, regardless of race,
color, religion, just because a
human being is a creature of
God.”
Agape was the last of the
Greek words discussed.
“Agape,” he said, “was
very little used before the
time of Christ. It had no
fixed meaning. “When the
Lord came to this earth to
bring us a new kind of love,
we had to have a new word
for it.
“It was not Eros which
was in the natural order. It
was not Philia which again
was natural. We sought about
for some word and found
agape, and it is used 250
times in the new testament.
“In the famous 13th
Chapter of 1st Corinthians,
where we read the word love,
and in the old translations,
Charity - that is the Greek
word from which the word
love is translated agape.
“Agape doesn’t mean a
love that receives. It is a love
that gives. Agape love does
not mean to have and to own,
to possess. It means to be
had, to be owned, to be
possessed . . . it’s a love that
never seeks self, in fact it’s
willing to die in order to help
another.”
