Maybe it’s a more special week in small communities, though. This week in the Toccohart area is a lot of running around for the pastor, but what a week nevertheless. Monday evening we were a part of an ecumenical gathering at First Methodist Church in Hartwell, where a young man gathered people together in song, slides, prayer, reflection and celebration of the unity we profess in Jesus the Lord. On Tuesday night we sought forgiveness and reconciliation as a small community at St. Mary’s in Toccoa. We did the same at Sacred Heart in Hartwell on Wednesday. Then Thursday' of the Lord’s Supper. At 6 p.m. in Toccoa we celebrate the central mystery of our faith as Catholic Christians, wondrously rejoicing that Jesus is the Bread of Life and gives us sacramentally Himself that we might know He is always with us until He comes again and transforms not only bread and wine but the whole of creation. At 8 p.m. we celebrate again in Hartwell, aware that the two communities 35 miles apart are truly as close as the table that is common, the altar that is one. For the second year, our gift at this Eucharist is our Rice Bowl, seeking to wash the feet of the world in service of our brothers and sisters everywhere, for we do seek to serve the least of His brothers and sisters - He demands that from us if we are to be His disciples. Good Friday begins ecumenically in both towns at 12 noon with the SERVICE OF THE NAILS. Each one is given a 30-penny nail at the beginning of the service, and through choral reading and song, we begin to realize that it is we who crucify the Christ by our selfishness today, our sinfulness today, our failure to live in His Way, His Truth, His Life. The nails are dropped individually into a steel bucket, and the churches resound not with the pound of a hammer, but the din of falling hails. At the end of the service each one is given two nails welded together in a cross, as a sign of our failure and God’s conquering our sin. Friday night we as Catholic Christians celebrate the Good Friday service, in each town, a little differently, but yet the same. And Easter Sunday begins at 7:30 a.m. in Hartwell, with the blessing of the fire, the lighting of the Easter Candle, the readings, the Alleluias, the proclamations, the Happy Easter A«P EASTER Serving American Homes Since 1859 CANDY OPEN 24 HOURS 1250 W. Following that celebration we continue with an old fashioned breakfast on the grounds, seeking to realize in every way that we ARE the Body of Christ today. Then to Toccoa and a Catholic Christian community that also celebrates the new dawn and the new creation that is ours in the Risen Lord. For the kids there, an Easter egg hunt following the Eucharist, and pictures and all the small things that celebrate our new life in Christ. It’s a great time of the year.
