Breuer of St. Jude’s parish was welcomed into the Serra Club of Metropolitan Atlanta at a special ceremony and Mass held at the home of Robert H. Schellmann, President of the local Serra group. Monsignor John F. McDonough of Christ the King was celebrant at the Mass, which was attended by Father Richard Lopez, Serra Chaplain, and members of the religious organization. Breuer, who recently retired as an executive with the Coca Cola Company, has long been active in local religious activities. He is a Grand Knight of Monsignor Stapleton Council 6517 Knights of Columbus; Faithful Purser, Archbishop O’Hara General Assembly, 4th Degree, and has served as State Director of Community Affairs for the K of C in Georgia. At St. Jude’s, Breuer serves as President of the Pastoral Board, Chief Usher, Vice Chairman of the Finance Board and First Communion and Confirmation Co-ordinator. The Serrans are currently engaged in a membership drive. The Atlanta group meets at the Stadium Club on the second and fourth Friday of each month for a noon luncheon. FransaJian Fathers, 109 Johnson Road, Lawrenceville, Ga. 30245. 4 Mision Numero Tres: Recibamos A1 Senor POR: JOSE MONTERO Es de pensar que aquella debio de ser una de las experiencias mas tristes y desagradables de Jesus en su campana misionera. Me refiero al episodio de los endemoniados de Gadara, narrado por los tres Evangelios sinopticos (Mat. 8,28-34; Me. 5,1-20; Lc. 8,26-39). Jesus expulsa a los “espiritus malos” de aquellos hombres, y, a peticion de los mismos espiritus, les permite entrar en una piara de puercos, los cuales, enloquecidos, “se arrojaron por un barranco y cayeron al lago donde se ahogaron”. JDesde luego, el hecho no dejaba de ser insolito. Sin embargo, lo peor vino despues. Los porqueros llevaron la noticia al pueblo y aquellos hombres, todos a una, dice el Evangelio, “salieron a donde estaba Jesus y al verlo le rogaron que se fuera de la tierra de ellos”. Creo que sobra todo comentario. Los de Gadara cerraron las puertas a Cristo que venia a traeries el bien, por miedo a perder los restantes puereos que les quedaran! El caso es extra-ordinariamente triste. Vamos a pensar que, como en muchas otras ocasiones, aquellas gentes ignoraban todo lo que perdian el echar de sus tierras al Senor. Este hecho es interesante porque tal vez muchos de los que actualmente cierren la puerta a Cristo no puedan presentar esta ignorancia como atenuante. Con alguna variante, esta actitud de rechazo de Cristo se repitio algunas veces mas, hasta culminar con la negacion escandalosa de todo un pueblo que le cambio, no solo por un Cesar de Roma, sino por un vulgar asesino que se llamaba Barrabas. Es verdad que, afortunadamente, no siempre sucedio asi. Impulsados ya sea por la pobreza, la necesidad, las enfermedades o por una fe curiosa e interesada, lo cierto es que las muchedumbres iban hacia aquel hombre extraordinario, que a todos consolaba y alimentaba, que obraba maravillas y que tenia palabras de vida etema. En muchas ocasiones salieron a su encuentro. Con frecuencia, tambien, le abrieron sus ciudades y las puertas de sus casas, le sentaron a sus mesas y compartieron con El su pan y su vino, y la carga cotidiana de sus gozos y sus lagrimas. Y Jesus pasaba junto a todos, tocandoles con su sonrisa, curando y sanando, perdonando y abriendo horizontes de felicidad inacabable a gentes hundidas hasta entonces en el dolor fisico o en las tinieblas de la envidia y del odio, de la codicia y del orgullo, del miedo y de la esclavitud de la came. Que testimonios de alegria como resultado de este abrir a Cristo nos han dejado aquellos afortunados que se llamaron Mateo, Magdalena, Zaqueo, Nicodemos, y los miles de anonimos como la adultera y la samaritana del pozo de Jacob! Rechazo o aceptacion. He aqui las dos actitudes que encontramos en el Evangelio frente a Jesus. Ambas, de incalculables consecuencias para nuestro bien o para nuestro mal. Cristo sabia todo esto, y por eso un dia comparo su Palabra a una semilla que cae en distintas tierras y que da diferentes frutos. Y en un esfuerzo de acercamiento, nos hablo de ciegos que no quieren ver y de sordos que no quieren oir. Y en su mirar sobre la historia, como en una perspectiva a larga distancia, El contemplaba estas dos actitudes repetidas a lo largo de los siglos. Y cuando para cumplir su mision redentora hasta el fin de los tiempos, instituye una Iglesia y elige unos apostoles para que sean El mismo prolongado entre los hombres, les fortalece y previene para que no se acobarden, dando al mismo tiempo a sus palabras el valor de una solemne amonestacion para todos nosotros. La cita es un poco larga, pero vale la pena recordarla, pues como decia San Agustin: “temo a Dios cunado pasa con sus gracias por mi alma”, y esta va a ser la tercera vez que Cristo va a pasar en mision apostolica por nuestra comunidad de Atlanta. Dice Cristo cuando envia a sus discipulos a predicar: “Vayan anunciando que el reino de los cielos se ha acercado ... Al entrar en una casa, saluden deseando la paz. Si la gente de la casa lo merece, dejen con ellos este saludo de paz; pero si no lo merecen, retiren ese saludo. Y si no les reciben ni les quieren oir, entonces salgan de esa casa o de ese pueblo y sacudanse el polvo de los pies. En verdad les digo que en el dia del juicio, el castigo para ese pueblo sera peor que para la gente de los lugares de Sodoma y Gomorra”. (Mt. 10, 12-15) Tampoco estas palabras necesitan comentario. El hecho es que Cristo viene a nosotros una vez mas, en esta tercera mision, en la persona de un apostol suyo. Es El mismo, y es su misma Palabra. Pienso que debemos preguntamos seriamente cual va a ser nuestra actitud como pueblo y como individuos. Tal vez nos suene duro, pero esto sucedio una vez en el Evangelio y ha seguido repitiendose en la historia. No seria tristisimo que ante esta nueva venida del Senor nos hicieramos los sordos, o le cerraramos las puertas, o, incluso, le dijeramos que se fuera por miedo a perder los muchos o pocos puercos que nos puedan quedar? Claro que nosotros no tenemos puercos. Pero dejemos la metafora y pensemos en esas cosas reales que sabemos son incompatibles con una autentica vida cristiana y de las que tal vez no nos interese desprendemos. Esos son en realidad nuestros puercos. No seria una pena que por conservar esas miserias cerraramos las puertas a Cristo? Inclinemos la balanza hacia el otro lado, hacia la aceptacion y el recibimiento regocljado de Cristo en la visita de su enviado, el Padre Misionero. Es la otra vertiente del Evangelio, la de las bellas experiencias de paz y de sosiego interior de que nos hablan sus paginas. Dejemos que se ahoguen todas nuestras miserias en el lago del perdon del Senor, ya que El viene para eso y para llenar de paz y de amor nuestras vidas. Y no olvidemos que la gracia del recibimiento de Cristo debe ser compartida. Hay que estimular a otros a que la reciban, a que vengan con nosotros a su encuentro. Debemos hacemos eco de la Mision para que seamos de las gentes a quienes el misionero deje la paz, esa paz que Cristo trajo a la tierra y que sera la mejor garantia y fuerza para nuestro crecimiento comunitario en Cristo, como individuos y como pueblo que camina hacia la casa del Padre. t
