Poletti, has forbidden priests to participate in public debates on

Cardinal Poletti’s ban was the latest move in a series of battles
matching the political left and feminist groups against the
church and pro-life forces since abortion became legal in Italy
June 6.
NEW DELHI, INDIA (NC) - Prime Minister Moraiji Desai

LA PAZ, BOLIVIA (NC) - Native priests and U.S.

National Honor For Scout Leinmiller
BY FATHER JOHN C.
KIERAN,
Scout Chaplain
Eagle Scout Mark W.
Leinmiller of Saint Joseph’s
Parish, Marietta, has been
chosen to participate in a
National Science Foundation
Antarctic scientific
expedition later this year.
The winner was selected
after four days of intensive
screening interviews by a
panel of eight judges
representing the Boy Scouts
of America and the National
Science Foundation.
Mark will work on a
glaciological and geological
project, “A study of the
interaction of the Ross Ice
Shelf and Byrd Glacier,”
headed by Dr. Robert
Thomas and Dr. Terrence
Hughes of the University of
Maine at a large field camp on
the Darwin Glacier, 150
nautical miles from
McMurdo. That project and
several others are under the
supervision of Dr. George
Denton, also of the
University of Maine.
Leinmiller chose this project
from among several available
as the one most closely
matching his own scientific
interests.
The selection process
that ended June 7, began
early this year. More than
1,000 applications were
received by 225 local Scout
councils. Area judging
reduced the number to 29
Mark Leinmiller
and regional judging cut that
to the six finalists.
Leinmiller attends
Georgia Tech and is a
graduate of Sprayberry
Senior High School in
Marietta. He is assistant
Scoutmaster of Troop 750 of
the Atlanta Area Council. In
high school, he played varsity
soccer, was President of the
Ecology Club, was a
semi-finalist in the National
Merit Scholarship
competition, and was chosen
as WSB Radio’s Outstanding
Young American. He has
served for two years on the
staff of the Philmont Scout
Ranch, Cimarron, N. M., and
is the Rayado Trek
coordinator there this
summer. He has solo hiked
850 miles on the Appalachian
Trail and has been active in
the Order of the Arrow.
The Reader’s Digest
Association is cooperating
with the Boy Scouts of
America and the National
Science Foundation’s
Division of Polar Programs in
this project.
Mark and his family have
long been active in Scouting
and live at 1383 Shadowood
Drive in Marietta. His father
Bill Leinmiller is Camping
Chairman for Cobb district
and participates in events
sponsored by the
Archdiocesan Scout
Committee.
A new division of Rehabilitation Services
is underway at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in
north Atlanta. The recent development of an
Occupational Therapy program will provide
treatment for a variety of patients who need
to increase their independence level.
“Our hospital program is directed toward
purposeful activities and functional
performance,” said Chief O. T. Chris
Bosonetto. “In other words, we want our
patients to be able to perform everyday tasks
independently. If that’s not possible, then we
teach patients to use compensations and
adaptive equipment,” she said.
For example, a patient confined to a
wheelchair may need to learn adaptive
cooking techniques, or a patient with hand
coordination problems might need to develop
skills in dressing and grooming.
“We provide treatment for patients with
coordination and motor skill problems as well
as patients who have a temporary or
permanent handicap,” Ms. Bosonetto
explained. “We can simplify tasks and offer
exercises that relate to the task,” she said.
“We also provide another frequently used
service,” she continued. “We make splints to
prevent and correct deformities, particularly
in bum and orthopedic patients.”
Many times, the Occupational Therapist
encounters patients who believe a task is
impossible, but with proper therapy and
encouragement, conquering that task can
bring about pride and self-esteem for the
patient.
The Occupational Therapy program at
Saint Joseph’s functions on a physician
referral basis and is part of the Rehabilitation
Services Dept. Physical therapy and speech
therapy are also included in the department to
provide total rehabilitation care.
Ms. Bosonetto comes to Saint Joseph’s
with 12 yrs. experience as a Registered
Occupational Therapist with degrees from
Western Michigan and Wayne State University.

Amy Attends C.U. Violin Program
AMY WITH STRINGS - Amy Carter performs
with her violin during the annual Suzuki String Recital
at Wolf Trap Farm Park near Vienna, Va. President and
Mrs. Carter attended the recital in May. Amy recently
was one of 300 children participating in the week-long
Greater Washington Suzuki Institute at Catholic
University of America.
WASHINGTON (NC) -
Learning to play a musical
instrument need not be
drudgery and need not take
years, according to a Japanese
educator-musician, Shinichi
Suzuki, whose impact is being
felt even in the White House.
President Carter’s
daughter, Amy, 10, has
gained sufficient skill in
under a year to have
participated in group
concerts, the latest at
Catholic University’s Hartke
Theater in Washington.
Miss Carter appeared
with 300 other children
between the ages of three and
14 in the second annual
Greater Washington Suzuki
Institute, while her mother
watched proudly. The child
also appeared at a recent
Suzuki concert in nearby
Vienna, Va.
Suzuki, a master
violinist, teacher and founder
of the Japanese Talent
Education Movement,
revolutionized violin teaching
to the very young nearly 30
years ago. His method is
based on the principle that
children have more capability
for development than had
been commonly believed.
Children learn music through
the same process by which
they leam their native
tongue.
In Suzuki’s view, the
parental role is vital. Parents
attend lessons and help in
home practice sessions.
Suzuki emphasizes listening
to recordings, motivation,
proper technique, repetition,
reinforcement and building of
children’s self-esteem. His
goal is not only to develop
children’s musical abilities,
but their character as well.
The Suzuki Institute, a
concentrated week of private
and group instruction, recitals
and concerts, motivation and
instruction, drew teachers
from across the country.
Each child is assigned a
teacher he has not previously
studied with.
A day at the institute
consists of a private lesson, an
hour repertoire class, another
hour of reviewing pieces and
musical games, and recitals by
individuals.
The parents attend
classes with their children as
well as lectures on home
teaching methods and
problem-solving techniques.
Suzuki visited
Washington and President
Carter for the first time last
April, while on a tour with
200 Japanese and American
student violinists. During the
visit, he gave the president’s
daughter a private lesson.
